Fix Steam Remote Play Together problems in this order: give the host and client a wired network baseline, read the Remote Play performance overlay, remove firewall or router isolation, reduce stream demand, then test hardware encoding, decoding, game settings, and drivers. A horror game does not use a special networking protocol; it is still a real-time video stream from the host computer with input sent back from the client.
This order matters because a frozen picture with continuing input, periodic stutter, and a complete disconnect can come from different layers. Changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify, so run one controlled test after each change.
What Steam Remote Play Together is actually doing
In Remote Play Together, the host PC runs the game. Steam captures the host’s video and audio, encodes that stream, sends it to the other player, and returns the client’s controller or keyboard input to the host. The client therefore needs a stable, low-variation path for both the stream and the input traffic.

- Stutter or brief freezes: the stream is arriving late or unevenly, often because network time varies.
- A frozen picture while your friend can still move: input may still be reaching the host even though new video frames are delayed, dropped, or failing to decode.
- A full disconnection: the session can no longer maintain the required connection, commonly because of firewall rules, router isolation, an unsupported network, or severe instability.
- Problems in only one title: that game may be placing more load on the host CPU or GPU, using a different resolution, or exposing an encoding or driver issue.
There is no separate “horror-game” network mode to enable. Treat the title as a demanding Remote Play stream and determine whether the fault follows the network, the host, the client, or one game.

Run the troubleshooting sequence in this order
1. Establish a wired baseline before changing software settings
Connect the host gaming PC directly to the router with Ethernet. If practical, connect the client device by Ethernet as well. Valve says, “We highly recommend making sure your computer is directly connected to the router with Ethernet,” and warns that wireless and power-line links can suffer interference and intermittent failures.
Play one short session with this arrangement before changing quality, codecs, or game graphics. Record whether the same scene still stutters and whether a disconnect occurs. This single test separates problems in the wireless or power-line path from problems that remain on a wired connection.
Use a cable long enough to avoid improvised adapters or a marginal connection. The goal is not to maximize internet speed; it is to remove variable radio interference and power-line noise while you diagnose the session.

| Connection path | How to use it during testing | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet to the router | Wire the host first, then the client if possible. | If the stream stabilizes, the previous wireless or power-line path was a likely source of variability. |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Use a strong-signal location and a dual-band router. Valve recommends an 802.11ac router; 802.11n on 5 GHz is the next best choice. | If 5 GHz works but the original connection did not, radio congestion or signal conditions need attention. |
| 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi | Use only when a 5 GHz signal is unavailable or unreliable; Valve identifies 2.4 GHz as more congested for this use. | Persistent variation on this band is a reason to move the devices, use 5 GHz, or wire the host. |
| Power-line networking | Remove it from the test path when possible. | An improvement after switching to Ethernet points to interference or intermittent power-line behavior. |
While testing Wi-Fi, stop other heavy traffic on the same network. Movie or audio streaming, BitTorrent, and Chromecast activity can consume capacity or add contention that is not visible when the network is idle.
3. Read the Remote Play performance overlay
Enable Steam’s Remote Play Streaming Performance Overlay in the advanced streaming settings. Watch it during the exact moments when the horror game hitches or the picture freezes.
Valve identifies the cyan network-time line as the key indicator for streaming network issues: large spikes mean network time is highly variable and usually coincide with video stuttering or freezing. A wired retest is especially informative. If the spikes disappear after wiring the host, investigate the former wireless or power-line path rather than immediately changing codecs.

Keep notes for at least one repeatable scene, such as entering a new room or triggering a scripted event. A single isolated hitch can be game loading; a repeated cyan spike at the same time as visible stutter is stronger evidence of a network-variability problem.
4. Check firewall rules, router isolation, and the network type
On the host, allow Steam Remote Play through the firewall on these ports:
- UDP: 27031 and 27036
- TCP: 27036 and 27037
Re-check the rules after Steam or the game updates. An update can cause a firewall prompt or create a rule that no longer permits the traffic, even if Remote Play worked previously.
In the router’s wireless or access-point settings, disable client isolation or access-point isolation for the network used by the host and client. Isolation deliberately prevents devices on the same network from communicating and can stop Remote Play from establishing or maintaining its session.
Valve says Remote Play is not supported in most cases on public networks, workplace networks, school or university networks, guest networks, networks with gateway portals, networks that require a login, or networks with access-point or client isolation. A hotel, dormitory, office, or café connection can therefore fail even when ordinary web browsing works.

5. Reduce stream demand and give Steam traffic priority
Open the Remote Play streaming settings and set streaming quality to Balanced or Fast while diagnosing. Valve recommends starting at about 3 Mbit/s, then increasing the bandwidth setting until hitches appear and dropping it back below that point. The figure is a starting point for the stream setting, not a guarantee that every network can sustain it.

In Steam’s advanced host options, enable Prioritize Network Traffic. If the router provides Quality of Service (QoS) or a bandwidth-priority feature, prioritize both the host and client devices. Do not prioritize only the host: the client also has to receive the encoded video and send input without being crowded out by other traffic.
Test one quality change at a time. If lowering the setting removes stutter but the overlay still shows occasional network-time spikes, the connection remains variable; the lower demand is masking the problem rather than repairing the path. Keep competing downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams, and other bandwidth-heavy activity stopped until the session is stable.
6. Separate encoding and decoding faults from network faults
Remote Play has two relevant hardware stages. The host encodes the captured game image, and the client decodes the H.264 stream. A network can be healthy while either stage is overloaded or incompatible.
In Steam Remote Play’s advanced host options, test hardware encoding on the host. On the client, test hardware decoding. Change only one option per session and write down the result. If enabling hardware encoding makes the picture worse, turn it back off and retest; if disabling client hardware decoding fixes a freeze, the decoder or its driver is implicated rather than the router.
Valve documents a known incompatibility involving NVIDIA hardware encoding with a software decoder, as well as a hardware-decoder incompatibility on macOS. When the symptoms match one of those combinations, toggle the affected option instead of repeatedly changing bandwidth.
When audio disappears, the stream fails immediately after starting, or a codec change produces a new error, inspect the host’s streaming_log.txt. The log can provide audio or streaming errors that the on-screen symptom does not identify.

7. Lower the game’s rendering demand while testing
On the host, lower the horror game’s resolution and turn off V-Sync for the diagnostic session. These changes reduce the amount of work the host must complete before Steam can capture and encode each frame. If the stream becomes stable only after this change, the host’s game-rendering or encoding load needs attention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsValve recommends at least a quad-core CPU for the host. The client needs a GPU capable of hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. These are requirements for a reliable baseline, not performance guarantees for every game or resolution.
Update the graphics drivers on both systems when practical. Valve notes that driver bugs can affect streaming, and a driver update can change whether hardware encoding or decoding works correctly. Reboot after the update before comparing results so the old driver process is not still in use.
8. Determine whether the fault is game-specific
After the network and Steam settings are controlled, test another Remote Play Together title. Use the same host, client, connection path, quality setting, and codec settings.
- If every title stutters or disconnects, focus on the network path, firewall, router isolation, competing traffic, and host or client streaming hardware.
- If only one horror game fails, compare its resolution and graphics load with the working title, then test that game with lower resolution and V-Sync disabled.
- If the issue appears only when a particular player joins, repeat the test with that player’s device on Ethernet or a strong 5 GHz connection; the client path can be the limiting side.
Do not use a different game as proof that the network is perfect. It is a control test that narrows the fault domain while keeping the rest of the setup constant.

| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | Why that check comes first |
|---|---|---|
| Stutter appears with large cyan network-time spikes | Wire the host and stop competing traffic. | The overlay is identifying variable network time, so remove the variable path before changing codecs. |
| Picture freezes but the other player still has input | Check the overlay, then test host encoding and client decoding separately. | Input and video use different stages; a video-path or decoder fault can leave input responsive. |
| Remote Play works at home but not in a hotel, school, office, or guest network | Move both players to a private network without captive login or client isolation. | Those network types are not supported in most cases. |
| Disconnects began after Steam or the game updated | Re-check the host firewall permissions and the allowed ports. | An update can change the rule that previously allowed network access. |
| Lower quality fixes the problem temporarily | Keep the lower setting, then test bandwidth priority and competing traffic. | The original stream demand may exceed the stable capacity of the path. |
| Only one computer combination fails | Toggle hardware encoding on the host and hardware decoding on the client one at a time. | A codec or driver interaction can be specific to the hardware pair. |
How to prevent the problem from returning
Keep a known-good baseline
Once a session works, record the connection medium, Steam quality, bandwidth value, encoding and decoding choices, and game resolution. If a later update or network change causes trouble, restore this baseline before experimenting.
Protect the path during play
Keep the host wired whenever possible. When Wi-Fi is unavoidable, use the 5 GHz network from a strong-signal location and avoid starting large downloads, media streams, BitTorrent transfers, or Chromecast sessions during play. Router QoS can help when other household traffic cannot be stopped, but it cannot overcome a network that blocks Remote Play or isolates its clients.
Change one variable at a time
A disciplined sequence prevents false conclusions. For example, do not lower resolution, disable V-Sync, switch codecs, and change bandwidth in the same test. Make one change, replay the same scene, and note whether the overlay and visible stream changed. Restore the previous value if the result is worse.
Keep both systems ready for Remote Play
Maintain current graphics drivers, ensure the host meets the quad-core recommendation, and verify that the client GPU supports hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. Revisit firewall permissions after software updates and avoid using guest or captive-portal networks for a session that needs a persistent peer connection.
Bottom line
The fastest reliable fix is usually a wired host connection followed by an overlay check. If cyan network-time spikes remain, address the path, traffic load, or router rules. If the network is stable but video still freezes, isolate host encoding, client decoding, graphics drivers, resolution, and V-Sync. Finally, test another title and document the exact setup so Steam Support can act on evidence rather than guesswork.
