Start with the lowest-risk sequence: completely quit Knee Deep, restart and power-cycle the Xbox, install console updates, then reinstall the game and its add-ons without deleting saved data. If it still fails, test an offline launch. That result separates a local installation problem from a network, entitlement, or synchronization symptom. The same process applies to the Xbox One edition and to Xbox Series X|S consoles running it.
What Knee Deep supports on Xbox
Knee Deep is a Wales Interactive release developed by Prologue Games. The official Xbox listing gives its release date as February 3, 2017, and identifies it as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox Wire describes the Xbox One edition as a choice-driven murder mystery containing all three acts.
That compatibility does not guarantee that every launch failure has the same cause. A suspended game process, corrupted temporary files, an outdated console, a damaged installation, or a network and entitlement problem can all produce similar symptoms. The steps below are ordered from the least disruptive to the most disruptive, so you can stop as soon as the game works.

Note exactly what happens when you select Knee Deep. The distinction matters because a title-only crash calls for a different response from a console-wide failure.

There is no documented title-specific error-code matrix in the available support material, so do not assume that a particular dashboard message identifies one unique cause. Use the observed behavior and the sequence below instead.
1. Quit Knee Deep completely
A game left in a suspended state can resume with the same fault instead of starting cleanly. A full quit removes that running instance without uninstalling the game or touching its saves.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Highlight Knee Deep in the active app or recent-games area.
- Press the Menu button (the button with three horizontal lines).
- Choose Quit.
- Wait briefly for the game to disappear from the active list, then start it again from My games & apps or your library.
If the game opens normally, the failure was confined to the suspended process. If it immediately returns to the dashboard again, continue rather than repeatedly relaunching the same instance.
2. Restart, then power-cycle the Xbox
Restarting closes system processes in a controlled way. A power cycle goes further by removing power and allowing temporary files and data to be rebuilt. Rockstar Games Customer Support explains that “Temporary files and data are often stored on the console to help the overall performance of the game.” Corrupted temporary data can contribute to freezes or loading errors.
Use a normal restart first
Open the Xbox power menu and choose the normal restart option, or use the console’s restart command. After the Xbox has fully returned to the dashboard, launch Knee Deep once. If the dashboard is unresponsive, use the full power-cycle procedure instead.

Perform the full power cycle
- Press and hold the physical power button on the Xbox for about 10 seconds, until the console turns off.
- Unplug the console’s power cable.
- Wait at least 30 seconds. Some Xbox crash guidance specifies at least 10 seconds; using 30 seconds meets that minimum and gives the console more time without power.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the Xbox on.
- After the dashboard is ready, start Knee Deep again.
This procedure does not require deleting a save, uninstalling the game, or removing your account. It is the appropriate way to clear temporary console state when your goal is to preserve progress. Do not interrupt an update or a save operation by unplugging the console while the system is actively writing data; perform the power cycle after the Xbox has stopped responding or has been shut down normally.
If the game still fails after a clean boot, move to system updates rather than repeating power cycles indefinitely.
3. Install every available Xbox system update
Support guidance for Xbox game crashes recommends ensuring that the console is running its latest system software before retrying the game. An outdated system can leave a title with compatibility or service issues that a restart cannot correct.
- Open the Xbox Settings app.
- Go to the section for System updates.
- Install any update that the console offers and allow the Xbox to restart as required.
- When the dashboard returns, launch Knee Deep again.
Keep the console connected to power during the update and wait for the update process to finish. If no update is offered, proceed to the reinstall step; do not treat “no update available” as proof that the game installation is healthy.
4. Reinstall Knee Deep and its add-ons without deleting saves
Reinstalling replaces the local game files. It is the most useful next step when only Knee Deep is failing after a quit, power cycle, and system update. The procedure removes the installed program and add-on files, not your saved progress, provided you do not select a separate save-deletion command.

Uninstall the installed files
- Open My games & apps.
- Highlight Knee Deep.
- Press the Menu button.
- Choose Uninstall all.
- Confirm the uninstall. If the interface presents separate choices for game content, add-ons, and saved data, leave the saved-data option unselected.
Install a fresh copy
- Open your Xbox library or the store listing for Knee Deep.

5. Test an offline launch
Offline Mode is a diagnostic, not a permanent workaround. KRAFTON Help Center’s Xbox crash guidance states: “If the issue persists, disconnect your console from the internet and launch the game in Offline Mode.” The purpose is to see whether the title can start without contacting network, entitlement, or synchronization services.
- Use the Xbox network settings to disconnect the console from the internet or select its offline option.
- With the console offline, launch Knee Deep from the installed-games library.
- Observe whether the title reaches its main menu and whether the failure changes.
- Reconnect the console to the internet and retry once if the offline launch succeeds.
If it launches offline
An offline success means the local executable can start without the online connection. The remaining symptom may involve a temporary network service, entitlement verification, or synchronization attempt. Reconnect and try again after the test; if the online failure persists, tell Xbox Support that the title launches offline but not online. That detail is more useful than simply reporting “it crashes.”
If it still fails offline
Failure with the network disconnected makes an online service explanation less likely. Confirm that the reinstall completed, check that the console is updated, and use the symptom and scope information when escalating. Do not repeatedly delete saved data as a general troubleshooting step; it is not required by this sequence.

6. Check ventilation and protect the console
A game that causes the entire console to shut down is not behaving like an ordinary application crash. Ensure the Xbox has clear airflow and is not enclosed in a space that traps heat. Keep vents unobstructed and allow the console to cool before trying again.
If the Xbox powers off during more than one game, or if it continues to shut down after the console is cool and well ventilated, stop treating the problem as a Knee Deep-only issue.
