Most Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX problems on PC come from partial controller support, display settings that do not match a 16:9 panel, or the difference between rendered scenes and prerendered video. Update the game, restart Windows, test one controller over USB, use a documented 16:9 resolution, and identify whether the failure occurs during gameplay or an FMV cutscene before changing advanced settings.
This guide covers the Steam edition released June 13, 2024. Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or later, DirectX 11, and 60 GB of storage as requirements. Its minimum target is 1280×720 at 30 FPS; the recommended target is 1920×1080 at 60 FPS.
What the PC port officially supports
Square Enix describes the controller feature as partial support, not universal plug-and-play compatibility. The named classes are Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and controllers operating through Steam Input. Square Enix also warns that a keyboard and mouse may still be required for part of the game’s navigation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That qualification explains why a pad can work in gameplay but fail in a menu, or work in Windows while the game ignores it. It also means that replacing a controller is not the first step: isolate the input path, then decide whether the problem is the hardware, Steam Input, or a game screen that expects keyboard and mouse.

Steam edition requirements and targets
| Item | Documented specification | How to use it when troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit, version 1909 or later | Confirm the edition and version before investigating game-specific faults. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11 | Keep the game and graphics driver on a current, supported configuration. |
| Storage | 60 GB available | Leave enough free space for installation and updates. |
| Minimum display target | 1280×720 at 30 FPS | Use this 16:9 baseline when a higher setting produces borders, cropping, or instability. |
| Recommended display target | 1920×1080 at 60 FPS | Use this 16:9 target on a suitable system before trying unusual aspect ratios. |
These figures are store targets, not a guarantee that every scene—including video files—will run at 60 FPS. In particular, changing the output resolution cannot by itself convert a 30-FPS prerendered movie into a 60-FPS movie.
Do this first: update, reboot, and remove variables
- Install every available game update. Do not begin by changing several graphics or controller layers at once. A known Square Enix patch for the Epic Games Store edition (version 1.0.0.8) addressed a shutdown when a controller connection was lost during Castle Circuit, a loss of character control in a Kingdom Hearts II FINAL MIX situation, event-skip volume resets, and a video-streaming shutdown. That patch notice applies to the Epic edition, so use it as version history rather than assuming its files are the Steam build.
- Restart Windows after updating. This clears stale controller, Bluetooth, and graphics-driver sessions and gives the updated executable a clean start.
- Disconnect competing devices. Unplug extra gamepads, racing wheels, virtual-controller software, and unnecessary Bluetooth devices. Multiple devices can change button numbering or cause the game to select the wrong input path.
- Record the symptom before experimenting. Note the collection entry, the exact screen, the controller connection type, whether Steam Input is enabled, the selected resolution, and whether audio continues when the picture fails. Changing one item at a time makes the successful fix identifiable.
Keep the first test deliberately boring: one game installation, one display, one controller, and no extra remapping layer. If the symptom disappears under that setup, add devices or software back one at a time. This is more reliable than changing several settings and trying to remember which one mattered.
Fix a controller that is not detected
1. Test one supported controller over USB
Start with a single controller connected directly by USB. The officially named support classes are Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers. USB is the simplest baseline because it removes Bluetooth pairing, power-saving, and wireless-device switching from the test.
Launch the game with no other pad or virtual controller active. Check input in gameplay and in the menus separately. If gameplay responds but a particular menu does not, that behavior can be consistent with Square Enix’s warning that keyboard and mouse may be required for part of navigation.
Write down exactly where detection stops. “No controller” is different from “buttons work in battle but not in a collection menu,” and both are different from a disconnect that closes the game. The distinction determines whether you should test Steam Input, keep a keyboard attached, or report a crash.
2. Compare direct input with Steam Input
When launching through Steam, open the game’s library entry, choose Properties, then Controller, and test the available Steam Input setting. Use one mode at a time: first direct controller input, then Steam Input. Do not change the controller, Bluetooth connection, and Steam Input profile simultaneously.
If the pad works in Windows but not in the game, this comparison tells you whether the failure is between the game and the device or between Steam’s translation layer and the game. Keep the mode that produces stable input and predictable button prompts.

3. Try a different supported class
If the current controller remains invisible after the USB and Steam Input comparison, test an Xbox controller for PC as a diagnostic replacement. This is not a promise that every model will work; verify the exact controller’s Windows and Steam listing. A second supported class can show whether the original pad or its connection path is the cause.
Use the replacement only after documenting the first device’s behavior. If the second controller works through direct USB while the first does not, the evidence points toward the original device or its connection path. If neither works but Steam Input does, keep that result in your support notes rather than treating it as proof that every controller requires Steam Input.
4. Re-test wireless only after USB works
Once a controller responds over USB, reconnect it by Bluetooth and repeat the same in-game test. If USB succeeds while Bluetooth fails, the game is not necessarily broken: the wireless pairing, Windows device state, or Steam Input profile is the next place to investigate. Keep other Bluetooth controllers disconnected during this test.
Do not switch between several wireless devices while the game is running. A disconnect can change the active device and, in some cases, expose a crash that has already been addressed in a patch. Reconnect, relaunch, and test one wireless controller at a time.
5. Check for disconnect-specific failures
A controller that causes a shutdown when its connection drops may be exposing a known defect rather than a wrong button mapping. Confirm that the current game update is installed, avoid changing wireless devices during play, and reproduce the problem with one controller. If the failure remains, include the exact collection entry and connection mode when contacting support.
Controller options at a glance
| Controller class | Official status | Recommended first test | Steam Input role | Menu expectation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox controller | Named by Square Enix as partially supported | Direct USB, one controller connected | Optional comparison if direct input fails | Keyboard and mouse may still be needed for some screens |
| PlayStation DualShock | Named by Square Enix as partially supported | Direct USB, then compare Steam Input | Use as an alternate input path when the game does not detect direct input | Partial support does not guarantee every menu action |
| PlayStation DualSense | Named by Square Enix as partially supported | Direct USB, then compare Steam Input | Use one mode at a time to isolate the cause | Keep a keyboard and mouse available |
| Steam Input controller | Named by Square Enix as partially supported | Launch through Steam with only that device active | Required as the translation layer for this class | Some navigation can still require keyboard and mouse |
The practical comparison is not simply “which pad is best.” Ask which official class your device belongs to, whether USB or Bluetooth is being tested, whether Steam Input is translating it, and whether you can use a keyboard and mouse for the screens that do not accept pad input. Those four details explain most differences between a successful and unsuccessful setup.
Fix wrong resolution, borders, stretching, or cropping
Return to a documented 16:9 baseline
- Set the game to 1280×720 first if you need the minimum documented target, or 1920×1080 if your system meets the recommended target.
- Use the monitor’s native 16:9 aspect ratio instead of forcing a wider or taller mode.
- Temporarily disable GPU-driver scaling overrides so the game and display are not applying competing stretch, center, or aspect-ratio rules.
- Apply one change, restart the game, and check the same scene. Record whether the result is a border, stretched image, or cropped edge.
The Steam requirements document 720p and 1080p 16:9 targets; they do not promise an ultrawide mode. On an ultrawide display, preserving the original aspect ratio can produce side borders. Stretching may fill the panel but distorts the image, while a crop removes part of the picture. Choose the least objectionable behavior rather than assuming a border means the game is malfunctioning.

Use the same resolution for controller and cutscene tests whenever possible. Otherwise, a change in picture shape can be mistaken for a video fix. Once the baseline is stable, move to a higher or unusual mode only if you can describe what changed and reproduce the result.

Use the symptom to choose the next test
| Symptom | Likely setting conflict | Next controlled test |
|---|---|---|
| Black bars at the sides | The 16:9 image is being preserved on a wider panel | Keep aspect-ratio scaling, then test the monitor’s own scaling mode. |
| Image is stretched | A driver or display is forcing full-panel scaling | Disable the driver override and return to a 16:9 resolution. |
| Edges are missing | Overscan or a crop mode is active | Use native aspect-ratio scaling and remove overscan in the display settings. |
| Resolution reverts or looks unstable | The selected mode may not match the display or game target | Restart at 1280×720, then move to 1920×1080 only after the baseline is stable. |
Change only one scaling or resolution control between restarts. If several controls are changed together, you cannot tell whether the game, driver, or monitor corrected the symptom.
Understand the two kinds of cutscene problems
In-engine scenes that stutter
An in-engine scene uses the game renderer. Its frame pacing can respond to the same display and performance settings as gameplay. If only these scenes stutter, keep the game on a documented 16:9 target, close competing controller or overlay software, and verify that the system meets the recommended 1080p/60 target before trying unusual resolutions.
Compare the scene with ordinary gameplay in the same session. If both are uneven, treat the symptom as general performance or display configuration. If gameplay is smooth and only one rendered scene stutters, record the collection entry and location; that is more useful than describing all cutscenes as broken.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Prerendered FMV that is black or out of sync
A prerendered FMV is a video stream. A black picture with continuing audio, or audio that gradually loses sync with the picture, points to video playback rather than ordinary controller input. Steam community issue reports describe some FMVs and in-game cutscenes remaining at 30 FPS and note possible audio-video desynchronization. Those reports describe observed symptoms, not a failure that occurs on every PC.
For an FMV problem, first install the current update and restart. Then return to the documented 16:9 resolution and test the same video again. Do not expect a resolution change to unlock 60-FPS video or repair every stream. If gameplay and rendered scenes are smooth while one FMV remains black or out of sync, classify it as a video-streaming issue in your support report.
A 30-FPS movie is not automatically evidence that your monitor, GPU, or refresh-rate setting is wrong. The store’s 60-FPS recommendation describes the game target, while community observations indicate that some video content may remain at 30 FPS. Report whether the video is merely 30 FPS, visibly stutters, turns black, drifts out of sync, or causes a shutdown; these are separate symptoms.
When a cutscene failure follows a crash
If the game shuts down during video playback, note whether it happens in the same collection entry and at the same timestamp. Square Enix’s Epic patch history includes a fix for a video-streaming shutdown, while Steam reported an August 26, 2024 update addressing crashes on AMD RX 7000-series hardware and the ASUS ROG Ally RC71L-Z1E512. Those fixes target specific scenarios; a different GPU or handheld may require separate diagnosis.

Do not infer that a patch for one hardware family fixes every controller, resolution, or FMV problem. Keep the update check, peripheral isolation, display baseline, and cutscene classification as separate steps.
The Epic version-1.0.0.8 notice is also useful context, but it is not a substitute for checking the build you actually launch. A Steam installation and an Epic installation can have different update histories. In a support ticket, identify the storefront first, then give the game version and date of the last update check.
How to prepare an effective support request
Support can act faster when the report describes a reproducible case instead of saying only that “the port is broken.” Include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- The storefront and game version, plus the date you last confirmed updates.
- Windows version, GPU model, and whether the system is a desktop or handheld.
- Controller model, USB or Bluetooth connection, and whether Steam Input is enabled.
- Selected resolution, monitor aspect ratio, and whether driver scaling overrides are active.
- The exact symptom: no input, a menu that ignores the pad, borders, stretching, cropping, black video, stutter, audio-video drift, or a crash.
- Whether the problem occurs in gameplay, an in-engine scene, or a prerendered FMV, and the repeatable location or timestamp.
- Which isolation steps succeeded or failed, especially direct USB versus Steam Input and 1280×720 versus 1920×1080.
Use Steam’s support links to reach Square Enix customer support and the relevant community guides after updating, isolating peripherals, and testing the documented display targets.
Keep the report chronological: state the original symptom, list the update and restart, identify the one-controller USB result, describe the Steam Input comparison, and give the resolution test result. Include whether audio continued during a black screen and whether the failure happened in a rendered scene or an FMV. This lets support distinguish input, display, video-streaming, and hardware-crash cases without repeating the same tests.
A fast decision path
- No controller response anywhere: disconnect every other device, connect one supported controller by USB, and compare direct input with Steam Input.
- Gameplay works but a menu does not: keep the keyboard and mouse connected; partial support allows this behavior.
- Borders or stretching: return to 1280×720 or 1920×1080, preserve 16:9, disable driver scaling overrides, and restart after each change.
- Only a movie is black or out of sync: treat it as FMV playback, not a resolution unlock; update, retest the same timestamp, and document the result.
- Crashes on supported hardware: confirm the August 26, 2024 Steam update where applicable, then escalate with the hardware and reproducible location.
Common questions
Why does Kingdom Hearts not detect my controller on PC?
The PC release has partial controller support. First disconnect other pads, wheels, virtual-controller software, and Bluetooth devices. Test one Xbox, DualShock, or DualSense controller over USB, then compare direct input with Steam Input in Steam’s Controller properties. A controller that works in Windows is not guaranteed to work in every game screen, and Square Enix says some navigation may require a keyboard and mouse.
Which controller works with Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 on Steam?
Square Enix names Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported classes. No class is described as universal plug-and-play. USB is the best first test; Bluetooth should be tested only after USB works, with other wireless devices disconnected.
Do I need Steam Input?
Not always. Test direct input first, then enable Steam Input and relaunch. Steam Input can provide the translation layer for a supported controller, but changing it at the same time as the controller or connection makes the cause unclear. Keep whichever mode gives stable input and predictable prompts.

Why do I still need a keyboard and mouse when the controller works?
Partial support covers the controller classes, not every screen or action. Square Enix explicitly warns that players may be required to use keyboard and mouse to navigate part of the game. If gameplay works but one menu does not, keep the keyboard and mouse connected rather than repeatedly replacing a functioning controller.
How do I remove black borders or a stretched image?
Return to a documented 16:9 mode: 1280×720 for the minimum target or 1920×1080 for the recommended target. Temporarily disable GPU-driver scaling overrides, use the monitor’s native aspect ratio, restart, and test one change at a time. Side borders can be the correct result of preserving 16:9 on an ultrawide display; stretching fills the panel but distorts the image.
Why are Kingdom Hearts cutscenes stuck at 30 FPS?
Community issue reports describe some in-game cutscenes and FMVs remaining at 30 FPS. The Steam recommendation of 60 FPS at 1920×1080 does not promise that every video stream is 60 FPS. A resolution change cannot convert a prerendered 30-FPS movie into a 60-FPS movie.
How do I fix a black or out-of-sync FMV?
Update the game, restart Windows, return to a documented 16:9 resolution, and replay the same video. If gameplay and rendered scenes are smooth but the FMV remains black, stutters, or drifts out of sync, classify it as video playback and record the collection entry and timestamp. Do not treat it as ordinary controller or resolution failure.
What should I do if the game crashes on an AMD RX 7000 card or ROG Ally?
Confirm that the August 26, 2024 Steam update is installed. Steam specifically reported fixes for AMD RX 7000-series hardware and ASUS ROG Ally RC71L-Z1E512. If the crash remains after updating, contact Square Enix through Steam’s support links with the hardware, storefront, game version, and reproducible location.
What information should I send to support?
Give the collection entry, storefront and version, Windows version, GPU, desktop or handheld status, controller model, USB or Bluetooth connection, Steam Input state, resolution, aspect ratio, scaling settings, exact symptom, and repeatable location or video timestamp. State which tests succeeded or failed, especially USB versus Steam Input and 1280×720 versus 1920×1080.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Steam port guaranteed to support every controller?
No. Square Enix lists partial support for Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers, and warns that some navigation may require keyboard and mouse.
Will 1920×1080 make every cutscene 60 FPS?
No. 1920×1080 at 60 FPS is the recommended game target, but community reports describe some rendered scenes and FMVs remaining at 30 FPS.
Are black bars always a fault?
No. Preserving a 16:9 image on a wider display can correctly produce side borders. Test native aspect-ratio scaling before choosing to stretch or crop.
Should I test USB or Bluetooth first?
Test one supported controller over USB first. After it works, repeat the test over Bluetooth with other wireless devices disconnected.
The Bottom Line
Use a controlled baseline: install the current update, restart Windows, connect one supported controller by USB, compare direct input with Steam Input, and keep a keyboard and mouse available. For display issues, start at 1280×720 or 1920×1080 in 16:9 with driver scaling overrides disabled. Treat black, drifting, or 30-FPS movies as FMV symptoms rather than assuming resolution will fix them. If the problem survives those tests, send Square Enix a reproducible report with the collection entry, storefront, hardware, controller path, resolution, and exact timestamp or location.
