To fix Kindle books that won’t sync, connect both devices to the internet, make sure they use the same Amazon account, enable sync in both the Kindle app or e-reader and your Amazon account’s Sync Settings, then run a manual sync. If a book is missing entirely, check that it is in your library and delivered to the device; that is different from a reading-position mismatch.
First, identify what is not syncing
Kindle sync can carry your reading position and related reading data between linked Kindle devices and apps, but a title missing from a device may instead need to be delivered to it or revealed by changing a library filter. Start with the symptom so you do not troubleshoot the wrong problem.
- Reading position is out of date: Check internet access and sync settings, then sync from the device with the most recent progress.
- The book is missing from the library: Check your Amazon content library, delivery, order status, and library filters.
Check the account and internet connection
Confirm that both devices are registered to the same Amazon account. Then make sure each is online. On a Kindle e-reader, turn on Wi-Fi and turn off Airplane mode. Kindle sync needs an internet connection. See Amazon’s sync settings guidance.
Enable sync on the device and in your Amazon account
There are two separate places to check: the local Kindle app or e-reader setting and account-level Sync Settings. Amazon says sync is enabled by default, but either setting may have been changed.

In the Kindle mobile app
Open More → Settings → Sync and make sure sync is enabled. Menu labels may vary by app version.
On a Kindle e-reader
Open More → Settings → Device Options → Sync and make sure sync is enabled. The wording and menu placement can vary by software version.

In your Amazon account
Go to Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Sync Settings and check that account-wide syncing is on. If it was off, turning it back on does not guarantee recovery of notes, highlights, or bookmarks created while it was disabled; do not assume those changes will return.
Run a manual sync
Once both devices are online and sync is enabled, request a sync and allow it to finish before checking the other device.

If the reading position is not up to date
On the device where you are furthest along in the book, connect to the internet and sync. Then open the title on the other device and check whether it has updated. If it has not, confirm that sync is enabled both locally and in account settings before repeating the manual sync.
If the book itself is missing
A missing title may not be a sync failure. Check whether Amazon lists it in your account and whether it has been sent to the device you want to read on.

- Open Manage Your Content and Devices → Content → Books and look for the title.
- If it is listed, use the delivery option to send it to the target Kindle or app, then sync that device.
- If it was recently purchased, confirm that the order and payment completed.
- In the Kindle library, select All and clear any active filters that could hide the title.

Refresh the device or app
If connectivity, settings, manual sync, and content delivery are all in order, restart the Kindle or app device, keep the e-reader charged, and install available software or app updates. For Whispersync for Voice problems specifically, Amazon also recommends checking for an offered book update. Removing a local download and downloading it again is a later step for that audio/e-book troubleshooting context, not the first general fix for a book that will not sync. Amazon’s Whispersync for Voice instructions apply to supported e-book and audiobook editions.

If a Kindle e-reader cannot connect to Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi capabilities vary by Kindle model. Amazon’s current connection guidance says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz; models released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz or WPA3. If your Kindle cannot join your network, try a network it supports, restart the router and Kindle, update the Kindle’s software, or test a phone hotspot. Do not assume every Kindle supports the same Wi-Fi bands or security options.
If you use Kindle for Windows
Amazon says the Legacy Kindle app, formerly Kindle for PC, is unsupported as of June 30, 2026, and directs Windows readers to the new Kindle for Windows app. If you are still using the legacy app, move to the supported app, then check its sync settings.
