Kernel Hearts (often misspelled “Kernal Hearts”) is a co-op roguelike action RPG released on Steam on September 17, 2026. Most launch problems are handled by bringing the game to the latest patch, restarting after driver or input changes, and testing one input or graphics variable at a time. Use the symptom-specific procedures below rather than changing several settings at once.
First, confirm the game and patch state
Current Steam metadata uses the spelling Kernel Hearts. Search engines and some posts may still use “Kernal Hearts,” but both terms usually refer to the same Ephemera Games title published by Whitethorn Games.
Before troubleshooting local files, launch the Steam client while online and let it finish any pending download. Recent updates address several problems that can look like hardware failures:

After updating, completely exit and relaunch the game. If a patch installed while the game was open, the running process may still contain old code.

Use this symptom-first order
- Crashes: update the game, update the graphics driver, restart Windows, verify the installation, and reinstall only if the crash continues.
- Stuttering: configure the in-game graphics options, including resolution quality where available, and change one setting per test.
- No controller: disconnect every other pad, test one controller, and then test Steam Input as a controlled alternative.
- Double inputs: remove duplicate XInput or Steam Input layers before changing bindings.
- Wrong prompts: choose the matching controller-icon family in the PC controller settings added in version 1.0.15.
- Steam Deck performance: expect to configure graphics manually; the store metadata does not promise an automatic optimal profile.
Fix Kernel Hearts crashes on Windows PC
1. Install the current game build
In Steam, open Library, select Kernel Hearts, and allow all queued updates to complete. A crash that began around launch or after an interrupted download should be retested only after the update finishes. Keep the client online during this check because the game’s current fixes and multiplayer assets may not be available from an offline session.
2. Update the graphics driver and restart
Install the current driver supplied for your graphics hardware, then restart Windows rather than merely closing the game. A driver update can replace files that are not reloaded until reboot. This is general Windows troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every Kernel Hearts crash is driver-related.
3. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam Library and right-click Kernel Hearts.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check and let Steam reacquire any missing or damaged files.
Launch the game after verification and reproduce the same action that previously crashed. Do not add several launch options or third-party overlays during this test; keeping the environment simple makes the result meaningful.
4. Reinstall only when verification does not help
If the game still crashes after the current patch, a driver update, a Windows restart, and file verification, reinstalling is the next general step. Reinstalling is not a proven universal fix, so preserve any local configuration or save data you need before removing the installation and test again on a clean launch.
When the crash is probably a known game fault
A crash-like incident may actually be an input lock, collision state, camera failure, or missing network asset. The September 24 hotfix specifically addressed those categories, as well as players getting stuck and desynchronization under high packet loss. If the game remains responsive after a short pause, check whether the problem is limited to one encounter or online session before assuming a hardware failure.

Reduce stuttering and uneven frame pacing
Use the current graphics controls
Open Kernel Hearts’ in-game graphics settings and locate the resolution-quality control introduced in the October 16 update. Lower resolution quality first if the image is rendering beyond what your system can sustain, then retest the same area. Because the update removed the monitor-refresh-rate frame cap, the game is no longer expected to limit frames according to that older rule; any remaining unevenness should be investigated through the available graphics controls and system load.
Change one option at a time. Record the original value, alter a single setting, restart the game if it requests one, and repeat the same movement or combat sequence. Changing resolution quality, effects, shadows, and display mode simultaneously can hide which adjustment helped.
Separate frame pacing from gameplay design
Siliconera’s October 16 review describes dodging as finicky and the camera as awkward, especially while locking on. It also mentions timers, high enemy health, and large areas. Those are reported handling and design criticisms, not measurements of frame time. If the camera consistently behaves the same way at a stable frame rate, treat it as a control or design issue rather than evidence of stutter.
Check for a reproducible pattern
- Note whether the hitch happens in menus, in a solo run, or only during online co-op.
- Use the same location and action after each graphics change.
- Watch for a one-time hitch immediately after loading, which is different from repeated pauses during movement.
- Do not quote an FPS number unless you measured it yourself under defined settings; no general crash-rate or benchmark figure is established for this game.
Configure Kernel Hearts on Steam Deck
Steam’s Kernel Hearts metadata says Steam Deck users need to configure graphics manually for good performance. That means a default profile should not be treated as a performance guarantee.
- Install the latest game update before tuning anything.
- Start the game and open its graphics options.
- Adjust resolution quality downward in a small step, then replay the same section.
- Change only one additional graphics option if the hitch remains.
- Keep a note of the setting that produced the smoothest result so you can restore it after future patches.
If a change makes the image unreadable or performance worse, return to the previous value instead of stacking more changes. The October 16 update’s resolution-quality control gives you a separate lever for reducing rendering work, while the removed refresh-rate frame cap means the old cap behavior should not be used as an explanation for current frame pacing.

For online play, also distinguish a local rendering hitch from network asset desynchronization. The September 24 hotfix addressed high-packet-loss asset desync, but it cannot turn an unstable connection into a stable one.

Start with one physical controller
Turn off or disconnect every other gamepad, virtual controller layer, and remapping device. Connect one pad directly, start Kernel Hearts, and test it before reconnecting anything. Version 1.0.15 fixed a case where only the first gamepad registered, so testing the first pad in isolation also avoids confusing that fix with a multi-device conflict.
Test Steam Input without stacking modes
Steam Input and native XInput can both translate a controller. Test one path at a time:
- In Steam Library, right-click Kernel Hearts and open Properties.
- Open the Controller section.
- Use the Steam Input option shown by your client, choosing either the enabled or disabled state for the first test.
- Close the properties window, fully restart the game, and test the same controller.
- If there is no change, switch to the opposite Steam Input state and restart again.
Do not leave multiple remappers active while comparing results. Version 1.0.14 disabled overlapping XInput support specifically because duplicate layers could produce double inputs.
Check the physical connection
- Reconnect the USB cable or wireless receiver firmly.
- Remove other controllers and test a different USB port if the pad disappears from Windows.
- Do not pair a second controller until the first one works reliably.
- If the controller works in Windows but not in a particular menu, keep a keyboard and mouse connected; Steam lists controller support as partial.
Stop double inputs or repeated button presses
Double input usually means the same physical button is being reported through two input paths. The practical fix is isolation, not rebinding every action.

- Disconnect all but one controller.
- Close controller remapping software and virtual-device utilities.
- Test Kernel Hearts with Steam Input disabled.
- If the duplicate press remains, restart and test with Steam Input enabled instead.
- Keep the mode that produces one response per press and leave the other layer off.
The version 1.0.14 change to overlapping XInput support is directly relevant here. If double inputs began after reconnecting a second pad or changing Steam Input, undo that last change first. Avoid judging the result from a single menu click; test movement, attack, dodge, and a text-entry or menu action.
Correct wrong button prompts
Version 1.0.15 added a PC setting for controller button icons. Open the game’s controller settings and select the icon family that matches the physical labels on your pad. This changes the on-screen glyphs; it does not repair a missing device or a duplicate input path.
If prompts change but the buttons still do the wrong actions, finish the detection and Steam Input tests first. A glyph mismatch and an incorrect binding can look similar when you only test one command.

- Disconnect every controller.
- Reconnect the intended first pad, then the second pad.
- Restart the game and check the lobby or co-op screen again.
- Repeat with Steam Input in the opposite state only if the first test fails.
Keeping extra pads disconnected during each test prevents an old device order from masking the first-gamepad fix.

Keyboard and mouse are still part of the fallback plan
Steam identifies Kernel Hearts as having partial controller support. A controller may work during combat while a particular menu still expects keyboard or mouse input. Keep both available for setup, graphics changes, account or lobby navigation, and recovery from an input lock. This is a compatibility limitation, not proof that your controller is defective.
Distinguish a technical fault from a reported handling issue
Not every awkward moment is a crash or frame-rate defect. The October 16 Siliconera review’s comments about finicky dodges and an awkward lock-on camera describe how the game handles, while timers, high enemy HP, and large areas describe its design. Compare your experience with these tests:

How to report a problem that survives these steps
Escalate with a reproducible description rather than “the game is broken.” Record the game version, Windows or Steam Deck environment, whether you were online, the controller model and connection type, the Steam Input state, the exact location or menu, and the action immediately before the fault. For stutter, record the graphics values and whether changing resolution quality altered the behavior. For a crash, state whether verification completed successfully and whether a restart changed the result.
Include a short sequence another person can repeat, such as “connect one pad, launch online, open the co-op lobby, press the second-player button.” This separates a patch-specific defect from a device-order or configuration problem and gives the developer a useful reproduction path.
