First determine whether the delay exists offline or only during online matches. In Street Fighter Training Mode, turn on the input display and test a few normal attacks, motions and buttons. If the game records your inputs late there, work on the controller, display path, frame rate, drivers or background software. If Training Mode is responsive but online matches stutter, roll back, or appear to skip, focus on Ethernet, Wi-Fi interference, router load, NAT and the other player’s connection.

This separation prevents a common mistake: changing network settings cannot repair a PC that is rendering at an unstable frame rate, and lowering graphics quality cannot fix packet loss between two players.

What “input delay” and “online lag” mean

Input delay is the time between pressing a button or moving a stick and seeing the game respond. It can be introduced by the controller connection, the game’s frame processing, an unstable frame rate, the display path or software competing for system resources. Because these causes are local to your setup, they can be present even when you are not connected to a match.

Online lag is a network problem. The game must exchange state with another player while both systems continue simulating a fight. Packet loss, jitter, congestion, a difficult NAT path or a problem on the opponent’s route can produce visible rollback, pauses, teleports or delayed-looking exchanges. A fast internet plan does not automatically provide a stable path for a fighting game.

Street Fighter V and Street Fighter 6 use different menus and matchmaking systems, but the first diagnostic split is the same for both: compare a controlled offline test with an online match.

Run a controlled offline test first

Use Training Mode and the input display

  1. Launch the game without entering an online match and open Training Mode.
  2. Enable the on-screen input display in the Training Mode options. The display should show directions and buttons as you press them.
  3. Perform individual punches and kicks, a quarter-circle motion, a block and a jump. Use several repetitions rather than judging one missed input.
  4. Watch two things separately: whether the input display registers your action immediately, and whether the character’s animation begins on a consistent frame.

If the input display itself appears late or misses actions, start with the controller and local system. If the display responds immediately but animation timing varies, investigate frame-time or rendering stability. A responsive offline test means the network, not the basic local input path, deserves priority for the online problem.

Record the result instead of relying on memory

Write down whether the issue is present in every offline attempt, only after the system has been running for a while, or only in online matches. Also note whether the symptom is a late button, a missed motion, a brief freeze, a visible rollback, or an opponent suddenly moving to a new position. These descriptions point to different branches of the diagnosis.

Where the symptom appears Typical symptom First area to check
Training Mode and online play Buttons or directions register late; frame pacing looks uneven Controller connection, frame rate, graphics drivers, display path and background applications
Online matches only Rollback, pauses, stutter or teleporting while Training Mode is responsive Ethernet or Wi-Fi stability, competing traffic, router, NAT and firewall settings
Only against certain opponents Some matches feel normal while others show repeated corrections or freezes The network path shared with that opponent, including their connection
After a graphics or system change Inconsistent response that began after an update or settings change Frame rate, video driver, operating-system update and game files

Fix local input delay and frame-time problems

Reconnect the controller and remove wireless variables

Temporarily test with a known-good wired controller, fight stick or gamepad if one is available. A direct connection gives you a comparison point without claiming that every wireless device is faulty. Reseat the USB plug, try another port, and remove unnecessary hubs while testing. If the wired test is responsive but the wireless device is not, the original controller, its battery state, radio interference or its receiver is the likely branch to investigate.

Do not buy an accessory before this comparison. A wired device can help only when the offline test points to the controller path; it cannot remove rollback caused by another player or by a congested router.

Stabilize the frame rate before changing network settings

On the Steam PC version, Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance starts with the system requirements, current video drivers and a current Windows installation. It also recommends verifying the Steam game cache and closing other applications. These checks address corrupted files, outdated software and resource contention that can make controls feel late even though the controller is sending inputs correctly.

If the frame rate is unstable, open Options > Graphics and set the quality preset to Low or Lowest. Test again in Training Mode after each meaningful change. A lower preset is useful as a diagnostic: if response becomes consistent, raise individual settings later while preserving a stable frame rate. If lowering quality makes no difference and the input display is still late, return to the controller, display and software branches rather than continuing to reduce image quality.

Use the correct GPU and power mode on a dual-GPU laptop

Some laptops contain both an integrated GPU and a discrete high-performance GPU. Capcom recommends selecting the high-performance GPU for the game and using a high-performance power plan when investigating unstable performance. Connect the laptop to its charger during the test so power-saving behavior does not change the result. After selecting the GPU and power plan, repeat the same Training Mode sequence and compare frame consistency, not just average visual quality.

Update and verify the software path

Install current graphics drivers and Windows updates, then verify the game files through Steam. Close browsers, recording tools, cloud synchronization, overlays and other applications that compete for CPU, GPU, disk or network resources. Reboot before the retest so a background process that was consuming resources is not left running.

Keep a short before-and-after note: driver version, Windows version, graphics preset and whether the input display was late. If the issue returns only after a particular overlay or utility starts, disable that program while playing rather than changing unrelated settings.

Check the display path

A display can add time between a rendered frame and what you see. Test the monitor or television in the same configuration you normally use, and confirm the cable and input selection. Capcom asks players reporting persistent problems to provide the monitor or TV model and HDMI details, so record those values if you need support. The game’s internal input display can be responsive while the display path still makes the action look late; that is why both observations matter.

Fix online lag and rollback

Use Ethernet as the baseline test

Capcom’s Street Fighter V Network/Connection Troubleshooting – Steam guidance states: “A wired Ethernet connection is recommended when playing Street Fighter V online.” Connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, disable Wi-Fi for that test, and replay several matches. This removes radio interference, signal fluctuation and competition on the wireless channel from the comparison.

Choose a cable with the connector that matches your platform and make it long enough to reach the router without a sharp bend or a loose connection. The phrase Ethernet cable for gaming describes the relevant accessory; a more expensive cable cannot repair a remote player’s latency, packet loss or an unstable local frame rate.

Stop competing traffic during matches

Capcom recommends temporarily disconnecting other devices when troubleshooting. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, game updates and uploads on phones, computers, consoles and smart-home equipment. A connection can show excellent download speed while queues build under load, producing jitter or dropped packets during a match.

Retest after the other devices are quiet. If matches improve, the problem is congestion or buffer pressure rather than an insufficient advertised speed. Leave the rest of the household connected only after you know which activity causes the degradation.

Restart the modem and router correctly

  1. Exit the game and power off the modem and router.
  2. Wait for both devices to finish shutting down, then power the modem back on and allow it to regain its service connection.
  3. Power the router on, wait until its normal status lights return, and reconnect the console or PC.
  4. Run the same online test with other traffic paused.

This clears temporary state and gives you a clean comparison. It does not permanently solve a failing device, an overloaded line or a difficult route, so record whether the improvement lasts.

Check NAT, UPnP and firewall status

Capcom’s network guidance points players toward NAT and UPnP. In the console’s network test or the platform’s connection information, look for a strict NAT classification. Strict NAT can make peer connections difficult or limit which opponents can connect reliably. If your router supports UPnP, enable it according to the router’s own documentation, then restart the router and platform before testing again.

Review the operating system or console firewall only enough to confirm that the game and platform networking services are allowed. Do not disable the firewall as a permanent fix. If you use manual port forwarding, document the existing entries before changing them and remove obsolete rules after testing; Capcom’s guidance supports checking networking and NAT, but it does not promise that a particular port arrangement eliminates every rollback event.

Interpret bandwidth correctly

Capcom notes that 15–20 Mbps is often sufficient for online gaming, with that figure attributed to Capcom in 2026. It is a practical bandwidth reference, not a latency guarantee and not a requirement that applies identically to every household. Packet loss, queueing, Wi-Fi instability, NAT behavior and the opponent’s route can still make a match poor when the connection exceeds that speed.

When only some opponents lag

Compare at least several matches before concluding that your setup is universally faulty. If one match is stable and another repeatedly rolls back while your offline test remains responsive, the shared network path may be the issue. That path includes the remote player’s connection, their router and the links between both platforms.

You can improve your own side by using Ethernet, stopping local traffic and correcting NAT or UPnP, but you cannot repair the other player’s Wi-Fi, packet loss or overloaded router. Do not promise that changing DNS, buying a different cable or forwarding ports will remove every opponent-specific event. Capcom publishes troubleshooting checks for NAT, UPnP, firewall and platform networking, not a universal Street Fighter 6 latency guarantee for a particular DNS provider, monitor, controller or cable category.

An ordered recovery plan

Use this sequence so each test answers one question and so you can undo a change that does not help.

  1. Classify the symptom. Test Training Mode with the input display and decide whether the delay is local, online-only or opponent-specific.
  2. For a local problem, isolate the controller. Reconnect it, remove hubs, and compare a wired known-good device when possible.
  3. Make local rendering consistent. Update Windows and video drivers, verify Steam files, close other applications, select the high-performance GPU on a dual-GPU laptop, use a high-performance power plan, and set Options > Graphics to Low or Lowest if the frame rate is unstable.
  4. For an online-only problem, remove Wi-Fi variables. Connect the platform to the router by Ethernet and pause traffic on other devices.
  5. Refresh the network equipment. Restart the modem and router, then check NAT status and UPnP support.
  6. Retest more than one match. Note whether the symptom is universal or tied to specific opponents.
  7. Escalate with evidence. Preserve the platform, region, error code, connection type, NAT result, controller type, CPU and GPU, driver version, operating-system version, monitor or TV model and HDMI details.

What not to change first

  • Do not start with DNS. DNS can affect name resolution, but Capcom does not publish a universal DNS-based latency guarantee for Street Fighter.
  • Do not assume a higher internet tier fixes rollback. The 15–20 Mbps reference addresses typical bandwidth, while congestion and packet loss remain separate variables.
  • Do not blame the controller for opponent-specific stutter. A controller problem should also be reproducible in the offline input-display test.
  • Do not lower graphics quality to cure packet loss. Low or Lowest quality is a frame-rate diagnostic for the Steam PC version, not a network repair.
  • Do not disable security controls permanently. Confirm that required game and platform services are permitted, then keep the firewall enabled.
  • Do not treat one good match as proof of a permanent fix. Repeat the test under the same traffic conditions and against several opponents.

When to contact Capcom support

Contact support after the controlled tests leave the failure reproducible. Include the platform and game version, region, exact error code, whether Training Mode is affected, whether Ethernet changes the result, NAT and UPnP status, and the date and time of representative matches. For PC cases, include the CPU, GPU, video-driver version and Windows version. For display-related reports, include the monitor or TV model and HDMI details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This information lets support distinguish a local rendering issue from a platform-networking or peer-connection issue. It also prevents repeating generic changes that you have already tested.

Bottom line for a responsive Street Fighter setup

Use Training Mode to separate local input delay from online lag. If the offline input display is late, stabilize the controller, frame rate, drivers, GPU selection, power plan, display path and background software. If offline play is clean, make Ethernet your baseline, stop competing traffic, restart the modem and router, and check NAT and UPnP. If only certain opponents cause rollback, their network path may be part of the problem. These steps improve the variables you control without promising that any single cable, DNS service, monitor or accessory can eliminate every online-lag event.
