“Infinicity” is not identified in Steam’s published Steam Machine, USB, or Steam Controller support documentation. If that is a device name, the exact manufacturer and model are needed for device-specific instructions. The faults described by readers—controller disconnects, missing HDMI audio, no signal, and an incorrect resolution—can still be isolated using Steam Machine’s documented connection, USB, Bluetooth, and display behavior.
Start with SteamOS and firmware updates, restart the Machine and the affected accessory, and remove unnecessary peripherals. Then test one connection path at a time: wired USB, Bluetooth, or a Steam Controller Puck/receiver; direct HDMI or DisplayPort instead of a dock or switch; and 1080p, the default game resolution, before changing HDR, refresh rate, or other advanced options.
First, confirm what “Infinicity” refers to
Steam’s official Steam Machine, USB, and Steam Controller support material does not identify a product or brand called Infinicity. That means a controller, headset, display adapter, or another accessory may be using an incorrect name, a retailer label, or a nickname. Do not apply firmware intended for an unknown model. Record the exact name printed on the device, its connection type, and whether the problem affects one accessory or every accessory.
The procedures below address Steam Machine itself. They are appropriate for a third-party game controller, USB headset, DAC or sound card, HDMI display, DisplayPort monitor, and common adapter or dock arrangements. If the exact device is later identified, its manufacturer’s firmware and compatibility instructions should be checked separately.

Do these checks before changing advanced settings
A clean baseline prevents a display, USB, and wireless problem from being mistaken for a software setting. Perform these checks in order:
- Install every available SteamOS update. If the controller, display adapter, headset, or other accessory has its own firmware updater, install the current firmware for that exact model.
- Shut down or restart the Steam Machine after updating. Restart the controller, headset, display, receiver, and any adapter that has a power connection.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, hubs, capture cards, network adapters, external storage, and audio accessories. Leave only the device being tested, the display connection, and a keyboard or other input device if required.
- For a display fault, connect the Machine directly to the display. Temporarily remove a dock, AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, or adapter from the signal path.
- Write down the result of each test. A controller that works on USB but not Bluetooth, or a headset that works only after another USB device is removed, identifies the failing path.
If the symptom disappears after this baseline, reconnect accessories one at a time. The device that brings the symptom back is more useful evidence than a blind change to several settings.
Fix a controller that will not connect or keeps disconnecting
Use USB to establish a baseline
Connect the controller directly to the Steam Machine with a known-good USB cable. Avoid a hub, extension, dock, or adapter during the first test. A working wired connection proves that the controller can communicate with the Machine and gives you a way to update or configure it without relying on Bluetooth.
Recommended Free Tools
If the controller is not detected over USB, try another cable and another port, then disconnect other USB devices. A cable can provide power without carrying reliable data, so a controller that lights up is not necessarily communicating correctly.
Pair a third-party controller over Bluetooth
Enable Bluetooth on the Machine, put the controller into its pairing mode, and open Settings > Bluetooth. Select the controller when it appears and complete pairing. Keep the controller close to the Machine during the first pairing attempt; distance and nearby radio noise add variables that are unnecessary during setup.

Many Xbox controllers need a controller firmware update before they work as expected with Steam hardware. Update the controller through the method specified for that model, restart it, and then repeat the Bluetooth pairing attempt. Do not assume that a controller’s operating-system update and SteamOS update are the same thing.
Forget and pair again when a saved device will not reconnect
A previously paired controller can remain listed while its stored connection state is unusable. Restart the Steam Machine first. In Settings > Bluetooth, forget or remove the controller, put it back into pairing mode, and pair it as a new device. This documented recovery sequence is preferable to repeatedly pressing the controller’s pairing button while leaving a stale entry in place.

Keep a clear line of sight between the Steam Controller and its Puck or receiver. Move the receiver away from Wi‑Fi access points, SuperSpeed USB storage, USB network adapters, and capture cards. Those devices can create radio interference or electrical noise close to the receiver even when the controller is only a short distance away.
For a useful comparison, test the controller with the receiver moved to a different location while leaving the Machine and game unchanged. If the disconnects stop, the original receiver location—not the controller’s software configuration—was the likely trigger.
Resolve USB controller and USB-audio instability
Steam’s USB guidance describes contention as a scheduling problem, not merely a question of total bandwidth. A controller or USB audio device may disconnect intermittently, develop changing latency, or behave differently whenever another device is attached. Gaming headsets, DACs, and sound cards are specifically listed as possible contributors.

Use the Steam Machine ports as separate test paths
| Port group | Documented connection | How to use it in troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Front USB-A | USB 3.2 Gen 1 | Use for a direct test, then compare with a rear port if behavior changes. |
| Rear USB-A | USB 2.0 | Useful comparison for a controller or USB audio device that is unstable on a front port. |
| Rear USB-C | Separate USB bus | Try this bus when practical to separate the accessory from contention on the USB-A ports. |
Connect the problem device directly, without a hub or adapter, and test one port group at a time. If a controller or headset behaves differently between the front USB-A, rear USB-A, and rear USB-C connections, the port or bus arrangement is part of the fault rather than an unexplained controller failure.

- Disconnect every nonessential USB device, including storage, capture hardware, network adapters, and USB audio equipment.
- Connect only the controller or only the USB audio device directly to one port.
- Play or reproduce the activity long enough to see whether disconnects, latency changes, or audio dropouts return.
- Try the same device on a different port group, including the separate rear USB-C bus when the connector permits it.
- Reconnect the other USB devices one at a time. Stop when the symptom returns and note which combination causes it.
- After the direct tests, try a powered or unpowered hub as a diagnostic. If the device becomes stable through the hub, or fails only through it, the hub’s scheduling and power arrangement is part of the connection path and should not be treated as a neutral extension.
For the baseline, bypass hubs and adapters. A hub is useful later to identify whether scheduling changes the result, but it can conceal a cable, power, or port problem during the first test.
Restore audio over HDMI
When there is no sound over HDMI, first prove that the HDMI link itself is stable. A blank, flickering, or repeatedly renegotiating picture can prevent a reliable audio path. Connect the Steam Machine directly to the display, confirm that the display is set to the HDMI input used by the cable, and check the display’s volume and mute state.
Then remove USB headsets, DACs, sound cards, and other USB audio devices for one test. USB contention can affect USB audio devices and can change when another controller or storage device is connected. If HDMI audio returns only after USB audio hardware is removed, reconnect those devices individually to identify the competing path rather than changing several audio settings at once.
Use another HDMI port on the display and another known-good HDMI cable. If a dock, receiver, soundbar, switch, or adapter is in the chain, bypass it until direct HDMI works. Reintroduce one intermediary at a time; the first device that causes audio to disappear identifies where to continue troubleshooting.

Once the direct connection is stable, reconnect the preferred controller and audio accessories one at a time. Keep a record of whether the failure is tied to HDMI only, USB audio only, or a combination. That distinction determines whether the next test belongs in the display path or the USB path.
Fix a wrong resolution, no signal, or unstable picture
Know the supported display arrangement
Steam Machine supports HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Gaming Mode currently supports one display at a time. When HDMI is connected, HDMI is the default Gaming Mode output. A second connected display, an untested switch, or a dock can therefore produce a result that does not match the simple direct-connection baseline.
Steam Support identifies 1080p as the system’s default game resolution, labeled Default in the Display dropdown. It is also the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. Treat 1080p as the controlled starting point before experimenting with higher resolutions, HDR, refresh rates, or per-game overrides.
Follow this no-signal and wrong-resolution procedure
- Restart both the Steam Machine and the display. A restart forces the display connection to renegotiate instead of relying on a failed earlier state.
- Reseat the cable at both ends. Confirm that the display is set to the input where the cable is actually connected.
- Try another HDMI or DisplayPort port on the display, if available.
- Try another cable of the same connection type. A cable that works at one resolution or refresh rate may not provide a stable test at another mode.
- Connect the Machine to another display when possible. This separates a display-specific input problem from a Machine output problem.
- Temporarily bypass a dock, receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, or adapter. Establish a direct picture before restoring the full signal path.
- Open the global display controls at Settings > Display and select 1080p or the Default entry as the baseline. Test the desktop and a game before changing advanced options.
- After the baseline works, change one variable at a time: resolution, refresh rate, HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature, or RGB range. If the picture fails, return to the last working value.
Separate global and game-specific settings
A global display mode and a game-specific resolution can disagree. Set the global mode first, confirm that the Machine remains visible, and then adjust the individual game only if necessary. Testing a higher mode before confirming 1080p makes it difficult to tell whether the display, cable, game, or per-game override caused the failure.
Advanced controls include HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature, RGB range, and other display options. The display may independently expose HDMI format, color depth, black level, and image-processing controls. Change only one control per test and keep the display’s own settings at a known, compatible mode while diagnosing the Steam Machine.

Use the correct DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter
If the Steam Machine’s DisplayPort output is connected to a display with HDMI input, the adapter or cable must be active. Steam explicitly does not support passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters or passive cables. A passive adapter can produce no signal, an unstable picture, or a mode that works only at a lower setting.
For a DP-to-HDMI test, remove all other intermediaries and connect one active adapter or active cable directly between the Machine and the display. Confirm that the display is on the correct HDMI input, then use 1080p as the first resolution test. If the direct active connection works, add a switch, receiver, dock, or soundbar one component at a time.
An active adapter is relevant only when converting DisplayPort to HDMI. A direct HDMI-to-HDMI or DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort connection does not require that conversion. Match the adapter to the actual output and input rather than buying a generic passive dongle.
Choose the right troubleshooting path
| Observed symptom | First comparison | Likely isolation result |
|---|---|---|
| Controller works by cable but not wirelessly | USB versus Bluetooth, followed by forget-and-re-pair and firmware update | The controller or its wireless pairing path needs attention; USB operation remains a working fallback. |
| Steam Controller disconnects near other hardware | Receiver location and line of sight | Moving the Puck or receiver away from Wi‑Fi and SuperSpeed USB equipment tests interference. |
| Controller or USB headset changes behavior when devices are added | One device at a time, then another USB port group | The changing schedule or bus arrangement points to USB contention. |
| Picture and HDMI audio fail together | Direct cable and display input, with all intermediaries bypassed | The signal path, cable, adapter, or display input must be restored before audio settings can be judged. |
| Picture works only at a lower mode | 1080p/Default first, then one resolution or refresh change | The higher mode, cable, adapter, or display setting needs separate testing. |
| DisplayPort output has no signal on an HDMI display | Active DP-to-HDMI adapter or cable | A passive converter is unsupported and should be removed from the test. |
Recovery branches for common combinations
Controller disconnects while a USB headset is plugged in
Keep the controller connected directly and remove the headset. If the controller stabilizes, reconnect the headset through a different port group, preferably testing the separate rear USB-C bus when compatible. If either device fails again when storage or another peripheral is added, continue the one-at-a-time USB sequence instead of replacing the controller immediately.
Bluetooth pairing succeeds but gameplay still loses input
Repeat the test after a restart, forget the saved device, and pair again. Move the Machine or receiver away from Wi‑Fi access points and high-speed USB hardware. If the controller remains reliable over USB but not Bluetooth, use wired operation while checking the controller’s firmware and the wireless environment.
HDMI video works but HDMI audio does not
Confirm the display input and volume, test another HDMI port and cable, and disconnect USB audio devices. Keep the display connection direct. If audio returns after a headset, DAC, or sound card is removed, add those devices back individually to identify the contention trigger.
Resolution changes make the screen go blank
Restart the Machine and display, return to the direct connection, and select 1080p or Default in Settings > Display. Reapply advanced settings one at a time. If the connection uses DisplayPort to HDMI, verify that the adapter or cable is active before testing a higher mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA stable everyday setup
- Keep SteamOS and accessory firmware current.
- Use a direct wired controller connection while diagnosing pairing or radio problems.
- Place a Steam Controller Puck or receiver in clear line of sight and away from Wi‑Fi and high-speed USB equipment.
- Reserve a direct USB port for the controller or USB audio device during testing; use the front USB-A, rear USB-A, and rear USB-C buses as deliberate comparison points.
- Use one display in Gaming Mode and establish a direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection before adding a switch, dock, receiver, soundbar, or adapter.
- Use 1080p/Default as the known-good display baseline.
- Use an active adapter or cable for every DisplayPort-to-HDMI conversion.
- Change one variable at a time and keep the last working cable, port, and display mode documented.
These steps isolate the connection type, interference, USB scheduling, signal path, and display mode independently. Because “Infinicity” is not a documented Steam Machine product name, the exact device model remains essential for any firmware, button-combination, or manufacturer-specific repair beyond this Steam Machine baseline.
