When a local language model gives wrong recommendations or repeats the same ones, do not start by randomly changing temperature. The two symptoms can have different causes: missing or stale knowledge usually requires better context or retrieval, while looping text often comes from conversation-state errors, stop conditions, or decoding settings. Freeze a reproducible baseline, inspect the exact prompt your application sends, then change one layer at a time—prompt and template, retrieval, context limits, stopping, sampling, and only finally the model or its fine-tuning.

First decide whether the failure is knowledge, reasoning, or generation

An incorrect recommendation is not automatically a weak model. The application may have omitted the relevant facts, retrieved an irrelevant passage, mislabeled a conversation role, or truncated the user’s question. Repetition can likewise be caused by lost state or an unavailable tool rather than by sampling alone.

  • Knowledge or context failure: the answer needs current, private, or domain-specific facts that are absent, stale, or wrong in the prompt.
  • Reasoning or instruction failure: the needed evidence is present, but the model applies it inconsistently, ignores constraints, or produces the wrong format.
  • State or template failure: turns, tool results, or system instructions are duplicated, omitted, mislabeled, or truncated.
  • Generation failure: the decoding configuration allows an endless continuation, collapses into a narrow token pattern, or over-penalizes normal repeated terms.

OpenAI’s Optimizing LLM Accuracy guidance describes the same split: context problems involve missing, stale, or proprietary knowledge, whereas model problems include inconsistent formatting, tone, or reasoning. Diagnose the layer before selecting a fix.

Freeze a baseline before changing anything

Without a fixed reference, a change that appears helpful may simply reflect a different prompt, random seed, retrieved document, or context length. Save several representative failures and record the complete runtime state.

Use a fixed prompt set that includes ordinary requests, edge cases, and adversarial requests. Run each case more than once when sampling is stochastic. This gives you an attributable comparison for every later change.

Fix incorrect recommendations

Inspect the request that actually reaches the model

Log or display the final tokenized or templated request in a safe development environment. Check that the intended system instruction appears once, the user question is complete, and each assistant, user, and tool turn has the correct role marker.

Look specifically for a duplicated system message, an assistant answer accidentally inserted as a user fact, an old recommendation copied into the new conversation, or a question truncated when the context window fills. A model cannot correct evidence your application never sent. Compare the rendered request with the source conversation line by line, including whitespace and template separators.

Separate missing knowledge from poor reasoning

If the recommendation depends on current prices, policies, internal documents, inventory, or another private corpus, do not expect the model weights to contain reliable facts. Add retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): retrieve relevant content, augment the prompt with that content, and generate an answer constrained by it. OpenAI defines RAG as “the process of Retrieving content to Augment your LLM’s prompt before Generating an answer.”

When the required evidence is already in the prompt but the model still misapplies it, investigate instructions, examples, output schema, and model capability instead of endlessly expanding the document store.

Build a grounded RAG pipeline

The 2023 survey Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Large Language Models: A Survey describes three core stages. Keep them observable as separate stages so you can tell whether retrieval or generation failed.

  1. Index: split source documents into coherent chunks, encode those chunks, and retain metadata such as title, date, section, permissions, and version.
  2. Retrieve: encode the user question, fetch the most relevant chunks, apply metadata filters, and optionally rerank the candidates. Record the returned text and scores for every request.
  3. Generate: place the question and selected evidence in a clearly delimited context. Tell the model to use only that evidence, cite or quote the supporting chunk, and say that the context is insufficient when it cannot support a recommendation.

Retrieval quality deserves its own test. A plausible-looking passage can still be irrelevant, duplicated, obsolete, or from the wrong product version. Check chunk size and overlap, embedding quality, the retrieval top-k, reranking, duplicate removal, metadata filters, and document freshness before fine-tuning the model. A log containing the question, retrieved chunks, scores, and final answer makes these errors visible.

Use a verification stage for high-consequence advice

After drafting a recommendation, run a second model call or deterministic checker that examines each claim against the retrieved evidence. It should identify unsupported claims, flag contradictions, and either remove an unsupported recommendation or label it as uncertain. OpenAI’s optimization flow places fact checking after retrieval tuning, not before it. Keep the original evidence and the verification result in your logs so a rejected recommendation can be audited.

Protect the context budget

Adding more documents can make an answer worse when it pushes the question, system rules, or best evidence out of the usable context. Reserve space for the instruction and response, remove duplicate chunks, and prefer a smaller set of high-scoring passages over an unfiltered dump. If the model receives a long history, summarize or archive old turns deliberately rather than allowing silent truncation.

Stop repetitive recommendations and looping text

Check state and template boundaries first

Verify that the complete conversation state is preserved between turns, role markers are valid, and every tool result is returned exactly once. Google’s troubleshooting guidance describes repetitive tool calls when a model loses prior context or is forced to call an unavailable endpoint. It also notes that non-structured repetitive text can appear when the model is stuck on a request it cannot resolve.

Inspect whether your application automatically appends the assistant’s last answer as a new user message, retries a failed tool call without changing the state, or sends a “continue” request after the model has already reached its stop condition. Fix these boundaries before tuning sampling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bound every generation

Use explicit stop strings that mark the end of an answer and a finite output-token limit. In llama.cpp, the stop option ends completion when a matching string appears, while n_predict limits the number of generated tokens. Set both to values appropriate for the task and record which condition stopped each output.

Change sampling one control at a time

Sampling controls how the next token is selected. Very narrow sampling can make a small model deterministic and repetitive; excessive randomness can reduce factuality and make recommendations wander. The documented llama.cpp defaults are temperature 0.8, top-k 40, top-p 0.95, and min-p 0.05. These are runtime defaults, not universal targets for every model.

Control What it changes llama.cpp documented default Diagnostic use
Temperature How strongly probability differences are flattened or sharpened. 0.8 If outputs are rigid and repetitive, test a small increase; if recommendations become less factual, revert.
Top-k Keeps only the highest-probability candidate tokens. 40 A very small value can force the same wording. Compare a modestly larger value while holding other settings fixed.
Top-p Keeps the smallest probability mass whose cumulative probability reaches p. 0.95 Lower values narrow choices; higher values add diversity but may reduce precision.
Min-p Removes tokens below a probability threshold relative to the best token. 0.05 Test only after recording the effect of top-k and top-p, because all three alter the candidate set.

Change one control, run the fixed prompt set, and record repetition, relevance, factual support, and refusal behavior. A setting that removes loops but produces unsupported advice is not a successful fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply repetition penalties conservatively

llama.cpp exposes repeat_penalty, repeat_last_n, frequency and presence penalties, and DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself) sampling. Its documented defaults are a repeat penalty of 1.1, a repeat-last-n window of 64, with frequency penalties, presence penalties, and DRY disabled.

Control Purpose Default documented by llama.cpp Risk when increased too far
repeat_penalty Downweights tokens recently generated. 1.1 Unnatural wording or suppression of necessary repeated terms.
repeat_last_n Sets how many recent tokens are considered. 64 A window that is too broad can penalize legitimate terminology throughout a long answer.
Frequency penalty Penalizes tokens according to how often they have appeared. Disabled Can distort technical language and lists.
Presence penalty Penalizes tokens that have appeared at least once. Disabled Can discourage required names and labels.
DRY sampling Targets repeated sequences rather than only individual tokens. Disabled May break formulas, code, or intentionally repeated structure.

Start near the runtime defaults and make small adjustments. Product names, API fields, legal terms, and other proper nouns may need to appear repeatedly; a penalty that removes those repetitions can make an answer less accurate.

Consider Mirostat only after basic measurements

llama.cpp also provides Mirostat, which targets a chosen perplexity. It is another sampling variable, not a guaranteed cure for loops. Keep the prompt set, seed policy, prompt, and output limit unchanged when comparing it with ordinary sampling, and evaluate diversity together with factuality and relevance.

Make the output contract unambiguous

Use concise instructions such as “Provide the answer once” and “Do not repeat yourself.” For structured output, make every field required and avoid instructions that force a particular field order; conflicts between a schema and ordering rules can themselves trigger repetition. Define what to do when evidence is missing—for example, return an explicit insufficiency status instead of inventing another recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reproducible troubleshooting loop

Use an evaluate–hypothesize–optimize–evaluate cycle rather than intuition. OpenAI recommends this iterative pattern because each change should be justified by an observed failure and checked for regressions.

  1. Assemble 20–50 fixed prompts. Include routine requests, boundary conditions, ambiguous wording, stale-document cases, and prompts designed to expose loops.
  2. Capture the full configuration. Store model and quantization, runtime and template, context length, seed, sampling values, retrieved chunks, output limit, stop reason, and latency.
  3. Label each result. Score factual support, relevance, novelty or diversity, repetition, and whether the model correctly refuses when evidence is missing. For RAG, score retrieval separately from the final answer.
  4. Change one layer. Test prompt and template first, then retrieval and context budget, then stopping, then sampling and repetition controls, and finally a different model or fine-tuning.
  5. Keep only measured improvements. A change survives only if it improves the fixed set without an unacceptable regression in factuality, latency, memory use, or refusal behavior.

For stochastic decoding, either fix the seed while diagnosing or run enough repeats to estimate variability. Do not compare one lucky output with one unlucky output and call that a configuration improvement.

Choose the fix that matches your constraint

Option Grounding and citations Repetition and diversity Latency and memory Rollback When it is appropriate
Prompt or template correction Restores evidence and role boundaries already available. Can eliminate loops caused by malformed state. Usually lowest overhead. Immediate. The rendered request is missing, duplicating, or mislabeling content.
Stopping and output limits Does not add knowledge. Prevents runaway continuations. Caps worst-case generation cost. Immediate. Outputs exceed the intended answer or repeat after completion.
Sampling and repetition controls May trade factuality for variety. Directly changes token diversity and loops. Small runtime impact. Immediate. State is correct but decoding is too narrow or too unconstrained.
RAG and retrieval tuning Best route to current, private, or domain-specific evidence; supports citations when chunks are retained. Indirect effect; better evidence can reduce unproductive guessing. Adds indexing and retrieval latency and storage. Reversible if the original prompt path is retained. The answer requires facts absent from model weights or prompt.
Model replacement or fine-tuning Can improve capability or format adherence but does not automatically provide current facts. May change style and diversity unpredictably. Often increases compute, memory, or maintenance cost. More involved. Baseline evidence shows a capability or consistent-format problem after context and decoding are sound.

Practical order of operations

For a new incident, use this sequence so the cheapest, most reversible causes are tested first.

  1. Reproduce the failure with a saved prompt and fixed configuration.
  2. Inspect the rendered template, token count, roles, retrieved evidence, and tool results.
  3. Correct duplicated or missing state and ensure the question and evidence survive tokenization.
  4. If facts are missing or stale, implement or tune retrieval; log chunks, scores, metadata, and freshness.
  5. Add an evidence-grounded answer instruction and a verification pass for consequential recommendations.
  6. Set stop strings and an output-token limit; remove automatic continuation loops.
  7. Test sampling controls individually, beginning near documented runtime defaults.
  8. Adjust repetition controls in small increments, watching for damage to required terminology.
  9. Compare Mirostat only as a measured alternative, not as a default remedy.
  10. Consider a different model or fine-tuning only when the fixed evaluation set demonstrates a remaining capability or consistency gap.

Common failure modes and their remedies

A plausible but irrelevant recommendation

The retriever may have selected a passage that shares keywords but does not answer the user’s actual constraint. Inspect the chunk and score, add metadata filters, improve chunk boundaries or embeddings, rerank candidates, and remove duplicates before changing the generator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model repeats a product name or required field

Not every repeated token is a loop. Lists, schemas, commands, and proper nouns legitimately reuse terms. Reduce or disable penalties that suppress required vocabulary, and judge repetition at the sentence or sequence level rather than counting every duplicate word.

Increasing randomness fixes repetition but harms advice

This indicates a diversity–factuality trade-off, not a complete solution. Restore the last factual configuration, then test a smaller sampling change, stronger grounding, or a clearer output contract while measuring both outcomes.

Answers become worse after adding documents

More context may have caused truncation or diluted the best evidence. Reduce top-k, remove duplicate chunks, reserve context for the question and instructions, and verify that the most relevant passage remains inside the final request.

Structured output loops or duplicates fields

Check for conflicting schema and ordering instructions, make every field required, and define a single termination condition. Validate the returned structure before displaying it and send a targeted repair request only when validation fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Results change on every run

Record and, during diagnosis, fix the seed and all decoding settings. If variability is part of normal operation, run repeated trials and report aggregate scores instead of relying on one completion.

What a successful fix looks like

A reliable local recommendation system does more than produce a less repetitive paragraph. It sends a correctly rendered request, retrieves evidence when knowledge is missing, exposes that evidence for audit, stops within a defined budget, and declines or labels recommendations that the context cannot support. Its evaluation set demonstrates improved factual support and relevance without unacceptable increases in repetition, latency, memory use, or unsupported confidence.

Keep the baseline artifacts and configuration history. When a model, runtime, template, document index, or hardware setting changes, rerun the same fixed prompts; a previously successful decoding value is not guaranteed to transfer across model families or runtimes.
