If a website shows your IP address in the wrong place, first find out which geolocation provider or database produced that result. Then request a correction from that provider—or, if you manage the network, publish a supported geofeed. Updating one provider will not automatically update others, and no correction can guarantee a permanent or street-level match.
Why an IP address can show the wrong location
IP geolocation estimates a location from an IP address; an address is not inherently tied to one physical place. Providers use different data and methods, so their results can disagree. Cloudflare notes that its locations are not guaranteed to align with other providers and describes IP geolocation as “an estimate, not an exact science” (Cloudflare IP geolocation documentation).
Locations can also shift when an address is reassigned or rotated. Mobile networks, carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), shared addresses, and networks serving users across a wide area may not map reliably to one city or postal code. A provider may therefore reject a precise correction even when the location shown for one particular user is wrong.
Identify which result needs correcting
Before submitting a correction, note the IP address or range, the location currently returned, the location you believe is correct, and when you saw the mismatch. Then identify where the result comes from: a specific website or CDN, an external lookup service, or a GeoIP database installed on a system you manage. Different providers maintain separate data; a change at one does not establish that another has changed.

Request a correction from the provider
Cloudflare result
For a likely incorrect Cloudflare location, use its IP geolocation data correction form. Cloudflare asks for the relevant IP range and the correct country, state or province, city, and ZIP or postal code when applicable. It reviews the submission and may decline it if it cannot confirm the location. Cloudflare says confirmed corrections generally take effect within a few business days; that is a published expectation, not a guaranteed deadline (Cloudflare documentation).
If an address rotates frequently—for example, on some mobile or CGNAT networks—the range may no longer represent the same users or place by the time a correction is reviewed.

MaxMind result
MaxMind offers one-time forms for location corrections. If you submit without an account, verify the email address within 24 hours or the request will not be reviewed. MaxMind says one-time requests are typically reviewed within 1–2 business days; accepted changes are included in its next database release. Review time and release timing do not guarantee that a correction will be accepted or immediately appear in every product (MaxMind location correction).
MaxMind may be unable to assign a precise location to an address used across a wide area. If it does not accept the requested location, its guidance is to contact the ISP. For network operators, MaxMind says a GeoIP Exchange geofeed is preferable in most cases for ongoing management; it can consume feeds that follow RFC 8805 and RFC 9632, and says geofeeds are imported and reviewed once per business day (MaxMind correction guidance).

ISP or organization name is wrong
A wrong ISP or organization label is a different issue from a wrong physical location. MaxMind has a separate ISP and organization correction form. It asks for the IP address or network, whether the desired change concerns the ISP name, organization name, or both, and the requested name. MaxMind considers multiple data sources and says acceptance is not guaranteed.
If you operate the network or a local database
Publish a geofeed for a network you manage
If you are responsible for the network, a provider-supported geofeed can be more practical than repeatedly submitting one-off corrections. Check the consuming provider’s requirements and keep the feed accurate as ranges change. MaxMind supports geofeeds following RFC 8805 and RFC 9632; other providers may have different processes.

Refresh locally maintained GeoIP data
If the incorrect result comes from a database installed on your own system, update that database before treating the record as a current provider error. MaxMind warns that accuracy declines over time when updates are not applied and recommends automating GeoIP or GeoLite updates. Its published schedule varies by product: some databases update on weekdays, some daily, and others weekly. Check the schedule for the specific database you use (MaxMind database update schedule).

The more precise the requested location, the more evidence a provider needs to support it. A country or subdivision may be supportable when a street address or postal code is not. When an address range serves users across a city, subdivision, or country, assigning every address to one precise location risks producing false positives.

MaxMind’s April 6, 2026 release notes illustrate this trade-off: the company said it would reduce some subdivision confidence values of 99 to 95 to reduce false positives where users on a network are dispersed across a subdivision or country. Those are MaxMind confidence-factor changes, not a general accuracy percentage for IP geolocation (MaxMind release notes).
Neither a submitted form nor a published geofeed guarantees a permanent correction. Address reassignment, network changes, provider review, and database release timing can all affect what a particular service returns.
When IP geolocation is not precise enough
For personalization, a broad estimate may be sufficient. For a decision that requires high precision or has compliance consequences, do not rely on IP geolocation alone. Cloudflare advises combining it with GPS or other first-party signals, with appropriate user consent and attention to privacy-law obligations (Cloudflare IP geolocation documentation). Device GPS can provide a separate location signal; it does not rewrite a third-party IP geolocation database.
