Missing images in an IMGKit JPG almost always mean that wkhtmltoimage failed to load the image before encoding the page. Check the generated HTML and URL context first, then verify access from the conversion process, local-file permissions, image settings, JavaScript timing, renderer diagnostics, and the wkhtmltoimage binary. JPEG quality cannot bring back an image that was never rendered.
How IMGKit creates a JPG—and where images disappear
IMGKit is a Ruby wrapper around wkhtmltoimage. It first asks the renderer to load the HTML, stylesheets, scripts, and image resources. Only after that does it encode the rendered page as PNG, JPG, or JPEG. A missing image is therefore generally a resource-loading or rendering problem, not a compression-quality problem.
The same distinction explains why a page can contain a correct <img> tag yet produce a blank area: the tag was sent to the renderer, but its URL was unreachable, blocked by a local-file policy, created too late by JavaScript, or handled differently by the installed renderer build.
Use this diagnostic order
- Inspect the exact HTML string or file passed to IMGKit.
- Test every image URL or path from the same host, container, user, and working directory that runs the conversion.
- Fix local-file access and directory allow-lists.
- Confirm images have not been disabled by an option.
- Allow JavaScript-generated images enough time to appear.
- Run the equivalent wkhtmltoimage command with diagnostics.
- Verify the executable and its version.
- Render PNG or a high-quality JPG to separate loading from encoding.
- Check that Ruby has flushed the output before another process reads it.
1. Inspect the HTML and URL context
Confirm the image tag is really present
Log or save the final HTML that IMGKit receives, not just the original template. Check for a non-empty src, valid quoting, and conditional view logic that may remove the tag in the conversion environment. If JavaScript changes src, inspect the pre-script HTML as well as the DOM state you expect after scripts run.

Resolve relative URLs deliberately
A relative value such as images/logo.png is resolved against the renderer’s input context. That context changes depending on whether IMGKit receives a string, a URL, or a file. A template rendered by Rails may work in a browser while the same string has no useful base URL in wkhtmltoimage.
For a network image, use an absolute HTTPS URL while diagnosing. For a local asset, use a path that exists inside the process or container and, where supported by your build, a correctly formed file:// URL. Check filename case exactly; Linux containers treat Logo.PNG and logo.png as different files.
2. Test reachability outside IMGKit
Network images
Run a request from the same machine or container and under the same operating-system user as the application. Follow redirects and verify DNS, TLS certificates, authentication, and response status. An image that loads in your desktop browser may require a session cookie, authorization header, or a different user agent that wkhtmltoimage does not have.
Local images
Use a file existence and permission check in the application process. Confirm every parent directory is searchable by that user, not merely that the file is readable by your account. Containers are a frequent cause of failure: a path on the host is not automatically mounted at the same path inside the container.
Reduce redirects and access control
During diagnosis, replace an authenticated or redirecting image with one simple local PNG or a public absolute URL. Once that works, add cookies, headers, redirects, and protected assets back one at a time.

3. Permit local files safely
wkhtmltoimage has a local-file security policy. Its load settings include --enable-local-file-access and repeatable --allow directory permissions. IMGKit passes wkhtmltoimage options through, so the option spelling and availability depend on your installed build.
Allow only the directory that contains the assets needed by the render. Do not broadly expose the entire filesystem to untrusted HTML. Check the installed binary with wkhtmltoimage --extended-help before deploying a configuration.
Ruby configuration example
IMGKit.configure do |config|
config.wkhtmltoimage = "/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltoimage"
config.default_options = {
"enable-local-file-access" => true,
"allow" => [Rails.root.join("public", "images").to_s],
"javascript-delay" => 500
}
end
html = render_to_string(template: "card", formats: [:html])
kit = IMGKit.new(html, "enable-local-file-access" => true)
File.binwrite("out.jpg", kit.to_jpg)
The example enables local access and grants one asset directory. If your build rejects a boolean or uses a different option spelling, use the exact syntax printed by --extended-help. Keep the per-render option and global default consistent so a shared configuration does not silently override your intended policy.
4. Make sure IMGKit has not disabled images
IMGKit supports wkhtmltoimage’s no-images boolean option. Remove it from the render call, global defaults, environment-derived settings, and any wrapper around IMGKit. A shared production configuration can leave images disabled even when the view is correct.
Search the final option hash and the command line emitted by your diagnostic run. If images work after removing no-images, keep that setting out of configurations used for image or PDF generation.

5. Wait for JavaScript-generated images
When a delay is needed
Some pages create the <img> element, replace its src, or obtain a signed URL only after JavaScript executes. Ensure JavaScript is enabled and set a suitable javascript-delay, which waits after page load before capture. Start with a short delay such as 500 milliseconds, then increase it only when the page genuinely needs more time.
Prefer deterministic readiness
If your build supports waiting for a selector or another readiness condition, use that instead of an unnecessarily long fixed delay. Remove lazy-loading during a minimal reproduction; browser-oriented lazy-load code may wait for scrolling or APIs that do not occur in a screenshot render.

Inspect script failures
Use renderer logging or debug options and inspect stderr. A JavaScript exception, blocked API request, expired signed URL, or unsupported browser feature can leave an image element empty even though the HTML source looks correct.
6. Run wkhtmltoimage directly and read stderr
IMGKit ultimately invokes wkhtmltoimage. Reproduce the conversion with the same input HTML, options, headers, cookies, and output path, then compare the direct result with the IMGKit result. Verbose output can reveal “cannot find” messages, HTTP errors, TLS failures, permission denials, or unsupported-resource warnings that Ruby code obscures.
Keep the diagnostic command and the IMGKit option set equivalent. Otherwise you may fix a difference in the test rather than the actual application. Save both stderr and the exact HTML so a deployment change can be compared later.

7. Verify the wkhtmltoimage executable
Check that a compatible wkhtmltoimage build is installed and executable by the application user. It may be absent from the service’s PATH, or your development and production hosts may have different builds. Set an absolute path explicitly:

Record the binary version and the output of wkhtmltoimage --extended-help during deployment. Option support and rendering behavior can vary by build, so never assume that a flag accepted on one host exists on another.
8. Separate loading from JPEG encoding
First render a PNG or a high-quality JPG and inspect whether the image appears. The renderer’s quality setting controls JPEG compression after rendering; it cannot repair a failed request, blocked local file, or missing DOM element. If PNG is also missing the image, continue debugging loading and rendering rather than adjusting quality.
Check Ruby output handling
When writing the returned blob to a Tempfile or another Ruby IO object, call flush before a second process reads, uploads, or serves it. Buffered I/O can make an otherwise successful conversion look incomplete.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only relative images are missing | No usable base URL or wrong working directory | Use an absolute HTTPS URL or a verified local/file path; inspect the final HTML context. |
| All local images are missing | Local-file access is blocked or the directory is not allowed | Enable local access and allow only the required asset directory. |
| Public images work; protected images do not | Missing cookies, headers, authorization, redirect, or TLS access | Test from the same runtime and supply the credentials supported by your build. |
| Static images work; dynamically inserted images do not | JavaScript is disabled, fails, or finishes after capture | Enable scripts, inspect logs, and use a readiness condition or suitable delay. |
| No images render anywhere | no-images, broken binary, or broad renderer failure |
Remove the flag, verify the executable path, and run wkhtmltoimage directly. |
| Direct output is correct but uploaded file is blank or truncated | Ruby IO buffer was not flushed | Flush before the reader or uploader opens the file. |
| One host works and another fails | Different binary, filesystem, container mount, user, or network policy | Compare versions, paths, permissions, mounts, and stderr on both hosts. |
9. Reduce a blank result to a minimal reproduction
- Create HTML containing one local PNG and one absolute image URL.
- Remove CSS background images, lazy-loading, authentication, redirects, and JavaScript.
- Render that file directly with wkhtmltoimage.
- Run the same input through IMGKit.
- Add back one dependency at a time: local-file policy, CSS, scripts, protected URLs, then redirects.
This isolates path resolution, file policy, network access, timing, and unsupported renderer features instead of changing several variables at once. The installed build remains the authority for which modern CSS, JavaScript, authentication flows, and image formats it supports.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while its capture pipeline accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Those cleanup steps can be turned off when required.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

- Keep local allow-lists narrow and stable so a path change fails visibly instead of exposing unrelated files.
- Run the same renderer build in development, workers, and production where possible.
- Set explicit timeouts and JavaScript waits; a very long delay increases queue time without fixing an unreachable resource.
- Capture stderr, binary version, final HTML, and effective options for reproducible failures.
- Use caching carefully for changing signed URLs and verify whether a cached result is being returned.
- For large batches, isolate failures per URL and retain the page verdict or renderer diagnostics rather than treating every blank output as a JPEG problem.
When the result is still blank
Return to the smallest case: one known-good PNG, one absolute URL, no CSS backgrounds, no lazy loading, no authentication, no redirects, and no JavaScript. If that fails, the remaining suspects are the binary, command-line options, process permissions, or output handling. If it succeeds, restore the real page in controlled steps until the first failing dependency is identified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing JPG quality fix a missing image?
No. Quality changes compression after rendering. If the image was not loaded, render it as PNG or high-quality JPG and continue debugging the resource or renderer.
Should I enable local-file access globally?
Only when required, and restrict it with an allow-list containing the asset directory. A narrow per-render or application configuration is safer than exposing the whole filesystem.
Why does the same template work in Chrome but not IMGKit?
wkhtmltoimage has a different input context, security policy, browser engine, timing model, and installed build. Test paths, credentials, JavaScript readiness, and supported features in that renderer.
