Hope in the City is not released yet. Steam currently lists a planned Windows release for November 11, 2026, with no user reviews or established post-launch defect pattern. If your copy crashes, shows a black screen, or ignores a gamepad after release, start with reversible checks: meet the listed requirements, update Windows and your GPU driver, verify the Steam files, remove software conflicts, then isolate the display or controller hardware. Those steps distinguish a local configuration problem from a repeatable game bug without deleting saves or reinstalling Windows.
What is known about the PC version
Steam lists Hope in the City as a Windows adventure/indie game from Lofty Sky Entertainment Inc., with NAGA Games shown as publisher. The store page advertises Full Controller Support and specifically names Xbox Controllers and DualShock Controllers connected by USB. It does not publish a title-specific crash fix, black-screen workaround, remapping procedure, or known-issues list. Consequently, the procedures below are practical PC and Steam diagnostics, not promises that the unreleased game has a particular defect.
Steam also marks Steam Deck compatibility as Unknown. Do not treat the Windows requirements or the controller-support badge as a guarantee that the game will run on Deck. Wait for an official compatibility rating or hands-on reports after release. Windows troubleshooting steps can still help identify a file, driver, or controller issue on a desktop or laptop, but Deck users should not assume that a Windows fix automatically translates to Proton.
Check the listed requirements before changing anything
These are Steam’s compatibility targets, not independent frame-rate tests. A computer close to minimum may require low graphics settings, a current driver, and fewer background programs once the game launches.

| Component | Minimum listed target | Recommended listed target |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 7 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel i7-2600K | Intel i5-10400F |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce GTX 560 | GeForce GTX 1060 |
| DirectX | DirectX 9 | DirectX 12 |
| Free storage | 3 GB | 10 GB |
Compare your system with the exact entries in Steam’s store page. Requirements do not establish expected resolution, frame rate, loading time, or compatibility with every driver revision. If your PC only reaches the minimum, leave additional storage free, close memory-heavy applications, and begin with conservative settings rather than assuming a high preset will work. A recommended specification is also not a promise of a particular frame rate; it is a higher compatibility target than the minimum.
Check whether you are using the intended graphics processor on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics. Windows’ display settings or the GPU vendor’s control panel can show which adapter is assigned to the game. This is an identification step, not a reason to force unusual power settings before the basic launch checks are complete.
Do these low-risk checks first
- Restart Windows. A clean reboot clears a stuck graphics process, pending installer, or device state. Do not launch the game through several overlays while testing.
- Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, apply available updates, and restart when asked.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver supplied for the GPU in your computer, then reboot. Record the driver version so you can include it in a bug report.
- Check free disk space. Keep more space available than the store’s 3 GB minimum or 10 GB recommended figure so Steam can patch and unpack files.
- Close non-essential software. Exit overlays, capture and streaming tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, browser windows using hardware acceleration, and other programs that inject code into games.
- Change one variable at a time. Write down the symptom, the exact point at which it occurs, and the change you made. This prevents several simultaneous fixes from hiding the cause.
These actions are reversible and useful for crashes, black screens, and missing input alike. If a problem disappears, repeat the same launch once to confirm the result before re-enabling programs or changing settings.
Fix a crash on startup or during launch
1. Verify the installation in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Hope in the City and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam before testing again if files were reacquired.
Verification repairs missing or altered game files without removing personal saves. It is a first-line check, not evidence that the title itself is defective. If Steam reports that files were reacquired, note that result in your troubleshooting record.
2. Remove software conflicts
Run one test with every non-essential overlay and hook disabled. Typical variables include Steam’s overlay, chat overlays, screen recorders, performance monitors, RGB control panels, third-party antivirus game modes, and GPU tuning utilities. If the game starts after a clean test, re-enable programs individually until the conflicting component is identified. Keep the working combination for future launches.
Do not add several compatibility layers at once. A clean baseline is more informative than running an overlay, a remapper, a capture tool, and an administrator session simultaneously.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
3. Compare the crash timing
- Nothing appears: recheck the operating system, GPU driver, free space, and minimum hardware target. A failure before a window is created often points to initialization or a dependency.
- A window flashes and closes: verify files, disable overlays, and test again after a driver update. Preserve any Windows error text instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
- The menu opens but a new game crashes: note the scene, graphics setting, and whether the crash occurs with a particular display mode. Start with low settings and change only one option between tests.
- The crash happens after several minutes: inspect temperatures, ventilation, power settings, and driver stability. A delayed failure is different from an immediate launch rejection.
4. Preserve useful evidence
Before making a large change, capture the exact error message, a screenshot or video, the time of failure, and whether the failure is reproducible. Record your Windows edition, CPU, GPU, RAM amount, graphics-driver version, display connection, and the steps that lead to the crash. Send that information with any crash log requested by the developer. A report that says “it crashes” is much harder to act on than one that identifies a repeatable sequence.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix a black screen
No official Hope in the City page currently identifies a single black-screen cause. Treat the symptom as a display-path problem first, then separate it from a game-file or driver problem.
When the game opens but the image is black
- Press
Alt+Enteronce to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. If the picture appears, select a stable windowed or borderless mode in the game’s display settings before switching back. - Confirm the monitor cable is connected to the discrete GPU’s output, not a motherboard video port when your processor and board provide both.
- Check the monitor’s selected input, resolution, refresh rate, and HDR state. Temporarily use the display’s native resolution and a standard refresh rate.
- Turn off overlays and background capture, then relaunch. A capture layer can produce a black presentation even when the game process is running.
- Try a second cable or monitor if one is available. A different display path isolates the game from a failing cable, input, or monitor handshake.
When the screen goes black after loading or changing settings
Use Steam’s file verification, then reset the display choice to a conservative windowed mode. Avoid changing resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and graphics quality together; test each adjustment separately. If the black screen follows a driver update, perform a clean driver installation using the GPU vendor’s installer options and reboot before testing. Do not delete save files to solve a display symptom.
When blackness arrives after playing for a while
Check airflow, fan operation, and temperatures for the CPU and GPU. Restore any overclock or undervolt to a stable default, select a normal Windows power plan, and close other demanding applications. Capcom’s general Steam troubleshooting checklist also calls out DirectX updates, shader-cache deletion, security exceptions, administrator permissions, power settings, closing other applications, and ventilation. Apply those items selectively: change one setting, test, and record the result rather than making an irreversible system-wide change.
Keep the display path separate from the game path
If Windows remains visible on another display while Hope in the City is black, concentrate on fullscreen mode, HDR, refresh rate, overlays, cable, and driver state. If the entire computer loses video output or reboots, stop treating it as only a game issue and investigate GPU power, temperature, hardware stability, and Windows reliability errors.
Fix an Xbox or other controller that is not detected
The Steam listing promises full controller support and names Xbox controllers plus DualShock controllers over USB. That describes supported categories, not a guarantee that every cable, wireless adapter, driver, or third-party virtual device will work.

Use a clean one-controller test
- Disconnect every other gamepad, steering wheel, joystick, and virtual-input device.
- Connect one known-good controller directly to a USB port on the computer. Avoid an unpowered hub for the first test.
- Confirm that Windows recognizes the controller and that it works in another known-good game or the controller test page in Windows.
- Start Steam only after the controller is connected, then launch Hope in the City.
- If the first USB port fails, try another direct port and, for a wired pad, another known-good cable.
These isolation steps do not establish a Hope in the City defect. They identify whether the variable is the controller, cable, USB port, Windows driver, Steam configuration, or the game.
Review Steam Input and the layout
- Open the game’s Properties in Steam and review the Controller section.
- Check which Steam Input behavior is selected and inspect the active controller layout.
- Apply one deliberate configuration, restart Steam, and test again.
- Do not leave several remapping tools active at once; they can expose duplicate or virtual devices.
If a controller works in Windows but not in the game, test the Xbox-compatible pad again with a clean Steam Input configuration. If that pad works while the original does not, the original device’s firmware, cable, driver, or layout is the likely variable. A USB-only DualShock connection is the supported path named by the store listing; do not infer wireless DualShock support from that wording.
Separate detection from button mapping
- No input anywhere: troubleshoot USB, wireless pairing, batteries, Windows detection, and drivers before changing game bindings.
- Menus respond but buttons are wrong: inspect the Steam layout and remove duplicate remappers.
- Two players or duplicate actions appear: disconnect extra pads and virtual devices, then restart Steam.
- Only one game ignores the pad: keep the known-good controller connected, verify files, and test a different Steam Input setting.
When comparing a replacement or test controller, prioritize Windows and Steam detection, a reliable wired connection, familiar button-layout compatibility, cable quality, and the seller’s return or support policy. A replacement is optional; use it only after testing the original controller in Windows and another game has isolated the device as the likely variable.

Choose the right troubleshooting branch
| Observed result | First variables to isolate | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Game never opens | Requirements, Windows updates, GPU driver, file verification, conflicting software | Initialization, dependency, or local configuration problem is more likely than a display-cable fault. |
| Window opens but image is black | Windowed mode, HDR, refresh rate, overlays, cable, monitor input, driver | The process may be running while the presentation path fails. |
| Game runs but the controller is ignored | One direct-USB pad, Windows detection, Steam Input, duplicate devices | The controller, cable, driver, or input layer needs isolation. |
| Crash occurs only after minutes | Temperatures, ventilation, power settings, overlays, driver stability | Heat, power, or long-running software interaction deserves attention. |
Use the branch that matches the first failure, not the most alarming symptom. For example, a black display after a full-system reboot is a stability event, while a black game window with an otherwise responsive desktop is a display-mode investigation.
Advanced checks after the basic sequence
DirectX and Windows components
The listed targets span DirectX 9 at minimum and DirectX 12 at recommended. Keep Windows current and install the DirectX components requested by the game or its installer. Do not download random DLL files from unofficial sites; a mismatched library can create a second problem and make diagnosis harder.
Security software and permissions
If verification succeeds but the game still exits immediately, check whether security software quarantined a game file or blocked access to its folder. Restore only a file you can identify as belonging to the Steam installation, and use a narrow exception rather than disabling protection globally. Test administrator permissions only as a diagnostic step; running every game permanently as administrator can hide the real access problem.

Shader cache and configuration changes
A corrupted shader cache can contribute to stutter or a failure after a driver change. Clear the relevant GPU shader cache only after recording your current settings and after the simpler checks have failed. The first launch afterward may rebuild shaders and take longer. If the game has a configuration file, back it up before editing it and change one display option at a time.

A delayed crash or video loss deserves a physical check. Make sure desktop GPU power connectors are fully seated, laptop vents are unobstructed, and fans are operating normally. Return experimental overclocks and undervolts to stable defaults. If another demanding game also crashes or the display cuts out, test system stability independently rather than attributing every failure to Hope in the City.
How to report a reproducible problem
When the standard checks do not help, send the developer a compact, repeatable report:
- Windows version and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU, GPU, RAM, free storage, and monitor connection.
- Graphics-driver version and the date it was installed.
- Controller model, USB or wireless connection, and whether Windows and another game detect it.
- Steam Input setting and any other connected input devices.
- Exact steps from launching the game to the crash or black screen.
- Error text, screenshots, video, crash logs, and whether file verification changed the result.
State what happened after each individual change. That lets the developer reproduce a title-specific issue instead of repeating generic driver and reinstall advice. Include whether the issue occurs every time, only in a particular scene, or only after a period of play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do first
- Do not delete saves to address a black screen or controller-detection problem.
- Do not reinstall Windows before checking drivers, files, overlays, and display connections.
- Do not change multiple graphics, HDR, refresh-rate, and Steam Input settings in one pass.
- Do not assume minimum requirements are a performance guarantee.
- Do not assume an unknown Steam Deck rating means either compatibility or incompatibility.
- Do not download replacement DLL files from random websites or disable security protection globally.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Hope in the City crash on startup?
There is no published title-specific crash pattern yet. Check Windows and GPU-driver updates, compare your hardware with Steam’s minimum targets, verify the installation, and disable non-essential overlays. Record the exact point of failure so a repeatable game bug can be separated from a local dependency or configuration problem.
How do I fix a black screen in Hope in the City on PC?
First try Alt+Enter, a conservative windowed or borderless mode, and a standard resolution and refresh rate. Then check the monitor input, GPU output, HDR, cable, overlays, driver, and Steam files. If the whole computer loses video or reboots, investigate heat, power, and hardware stability rather than only changing game settings.

Why is my Xbox controller not working?
Connect one known-good Xbox-compatible controller directly by USB, confirm Windows and another game detect it, disconnect other input devices, and review the game’s Steam Input layout. Restart Steam after changing the controller setting. If the known-good pad works, the original controller, cable, firmware, or remapping layer is the likely variable.
What PC specs does Hope in the City need?
Steam lists Windows 7 64-bit, an Intel i7-2600K, 4 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 560, DirectX 9, and 3 GB of storage as minimum. The recommended target is Windows 10 64-bit, Intel i5-10400F, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1060, DirectX 12, and 10 GB of storage. These are compatibility targets, not measured frame-rate guarantees.
Is Hope in the City Steam Deck compatible?
Steam currently reports compatibility as Unknown. No reliable promise of Deck support should be made until Valve’s rating or post-release testing provides evidence. The Windows controller and display steps in this guide do not establish Proton or Deck compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I buy a new controller or repair utility?
Not as a first step. Free checks—Windows updates, drivers, Steam file verification, conflict isolation, and direct-USB testing—have greater diagnostic value. Consider an Xbox-compatible controller only as an optional known-good test or replacement after the original device is isolated. A paid PC utility should be considered only after those checks fail, and its current features, price, and claims should be verified before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Hope in the City releasing on PC?
Steam lists a planned Windows release date of November 11, 2026. The listing is not yet available for play and has no user reviews.
Does Hope in the City support DualShock controllers wirelessly?
Steam names DualShock Controllers with USB-only support. Do not infer wireless DualShock support from the Full Controller Support badge.
What should I send the developer after troubleshooting fails?
Send reproducible steps, Windows and hardware specifications, GPU-driver version, controller and Steam Input details, error text, screenshots or video, crash logs, and the result of file verification.
The Bottom Line
Because Hope in the City is scheduled for November 11, 2026 and has no established post-launch issue history, diagnose symptoms rather than assuming a known bug. Update Windows and the GPU driver, verify Steam files, close overlays, and compare your PC with the listed requirements. For a black screen, isolate fullscreen mode, HDR, refresh rate, monitor input, cable, and heat. For controller trouble, test one direct-USB, Xbox-compatible pad with a clean Steam Input setup. Preserve evidence, change one variable at a time, and report a reproducible failure instead of deleting saves or reinstalling Windows.
