If the Hela: Of Mice & Magic demo crashes or refuses to start, work through the checks in order: confirm the published Windows hardware baseline, update Windows and your graphics driver, verify the Steam installation, then isolate overlays and controllers. Use an Xbox/XInput pad first for input problems. Steam Deck play is reported by the developer but is not marked verified in the store, and an Epic Online Services account is not a general requirement for the solo demo.
Start with the symptom and the point of failure
The fastest fix depends on when Hela fails. A process that exits before a window appears needs a different check from a game that reaches the menu and crashes when a controller is connected.
| Symptom | Where it fails | First diagnostic |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens or the game closes immediately | Before the first window or menu | Check the Windows 64-bit requirement, hardware baseline, driver state, Steam files, redistributable installation and security-software quarantine. |
| Black screen | Window appears but no usable picture | Verify files, reboot after updating the graphics driver, and test with overlays and capture tools disabled. |
| Crash while loading | After launch, before or during a scene | Record the exact loading stage, verify files, and test once with every controller disconnected. |
| Controller is not detected | Menu or gameplay | Use one Xbox/XInput controller, remove other input devices and remapping layers, then restart Steam. |
| Steam Deck instability | Platform-specific launch or play issue | Treat compatibility as configuration-dependent: the developer reports Deck play, while the store currently lists compatibility as Unknown. |
Check whether your PC meets the demo’s requirements
The Steam listing for app 4553860 identifies the demo as a 64-bit Windows release. These are the published minimum specifications:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Component | Minimum listed requirement | Why it matters during troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit | A 32-bit installation or an older unsupported Windows version fails the basic platform requirement. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Below-minimum CPUs can produce unstable frame delivery or fail during heavier loading. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | Systems with less memory have less room for the game, Steam and background applications to coexist. |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB VRAM or AMD Radeon RX 580 with 8 GB VRAM | The GPU model and available video memory are both relevant; a newer card with unusually little VRAM can still behave differently. |
| Storage | 15 GB available space | Leave the required free space on the drive that contains the demo, not merely somewhere else on the PC. |
| Architecture | 64-bit processor and operating system | The 64-bit requirement is separate from the Windows edition name. |
If one item is below the baseline
Do not treat a below-minimum machine as evidence of a Hela-specific bug. First free storage, close memory-heavy applications and confirm that Windows actually reports a 64-bit installation. If the processor or graphics hardware is below the listed class, later steps may reduce conflicts but cannot make the system meet the published baseline.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Work through the launch and crash sequence
Make one change at a time and retry after each change. That gives you a useful result instead of changing several variables and losing track of the cause.
- Confirm the demo installation. In Steam, open Library, right-click the Hela demo, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Allow the process to finish before launching again.
- Update Windows and the GPU driver. Install pending Windows updates and the current driver supplied for your NVIDIA or AMD graphics card. Restart the PC after both operations. This is a general diagnostic step; no specific Hela driver defect has been published.
- Remove software that injects into the game. Temporarily disable Steam overlay, recording or capture utilities, performance overlays and controller-remapping software. Re-enable them individually after a successful launch so you can identify a conflict rather than leaving every tool disabled permanently.
- Retry with a clean input setup. Disconnect extra gamepads, wheels, fight sticks and virtual controllers. If the game starts without them, reconnect one device at a time.
- Check the bundled Visual C++ installer. SteamDB lists
vc_redist.x64.exein the demo depot. If the demo exits immediately or shows a missing-runtime message, allow that installer to run and repair the runtime if Windows offers the option. SteamDB does not publish a Hela-specific repair procedure, so do not assume that reinstalling it is required when no runtime error is shown. - Check security software. Look in your antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine and blocked-application history for the demo executable or its runtime components. Restore and allow a file only when you recognize the path and have confirmed the file came from Steam; then verify the Steam files again.
- Capture the failure details. Write down the exact error text, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, controller model, and whether the failure occurs before the first menu, during loading or after a device is connected. These details are more useful to the developer than a report that simply says “it crashes.”
Fix a black screen or a crash during loading
Black screen before the first menu
Start with file verification and a full reboot after driver and Windows updates. Then launch with overlays and capture programs disabled. If the process is visible in Task Manager but no image appears, wait for one complete launch attempt before ending it; record whether it eventually exits, remains running or produces an error. That distinction helps separate a rendering problem from a hung process.

Crash while a scene or save is loading
Repeat the launch after verification with all nonessential USB controllers removed. If the same loading point fails on a clean input setup, note the scene or loading percentage, if shown, and whether the crash is repeatable. Do not claim that a particular save file, driver or asset is defective unless the same evidence is reproduced consistently and reported to the developer.
Crash only after connecting a controller
Unplug the controller, start the demo and reproduce the launch once. If it succeeds, close the game, connect one Xbox/XInput controller and try again. A change in outcome identifies the input path as a useful suspect, but it does not prove a confirmed Hela defect; no official crash bulletin establishes one.

Get the controller working
Steam lists the developers’ recommendation to play with a controller, identifies Xbox Controllers under Full Controller Support and marks the demo’s metadata as Gamepad Preferred. That makes an Xbox/XInput pad the most informative first test.
Use a single, direct XInput test
- Close Hela and disconnect every other gamepad, wheel, fight stick and virtual input device.
- Connect one Xbox/XInput controller. If you have a choice, test a wired connection first to remove wireless pairing and battery variables.
- Close remapping layers temporarily. This includes software that creates a virtual Xbox pad or translates one controller type into another.
- Restart Steam after changing the active device, then launch the demo from the Library.
- Test menu navigation and one short gameplay session. If input works, reconnect other devices one by one to find the conflict.
Interpret the result
| Test result | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Xbox/XInput works with all other devices removed | Reconnect devices individually and leave the conflicting remapper or virtual device disabled. |
| No controller works, but keyboard and mouse do | Repeat the Steam restart and file-verification steps, then record the controller model, connection type and Windows version for support. |
| The game crashes only when any pad is connected | Reproduce once unplugged, then with one Xbox/XInput pad. Keep the two outcomes in your report; they show the failure boundary. |
| A non-Xbox pad is invisible or has incorrect prompts | Use the Xbox/XInput controller as the baseline. Do not infer that every DirectInput, Bluetooth or third-party device has the same support level. |
These disconnect, remapper and restart actions are practical isolation steps, not a published Hela hotfix. If they do not change the result, include the exact hardware and connection path in your support request.

Understand Steam Deck support correctly
An official community announcement says the demo is playable on Steam Deck. At the same time, the Steam store page currently shows Steam Deck Compatibility as Unknown. Consider Deck behavior configuration-dependent rather than equivalent to verified support.
Deck troubleshooting order
- Install the latest SteamOS and Steam client updates available to the Deck, then restart the device.
- Use Steam’s Installed Files page to verify the demo, just as on Windows.
- Disconnect external controllers and docks for one test, then retry using the Deck’s built-in controls.
- If the built-in controls work, reconnect one accessory at a time and record which change affects launch or input.
- When contacting support, state that the test was on Steam Deck, identify whether the failure occurred in Gaming Mode or Desktop Mode, and include the exact point of failure.
Do not describe a successful run on one Deck configuration as a guarantee for every Deck. The store’s Unknown label means compatibility status has not been presented as verified.

Do you need Epic Online Services for the demo?
No universal EOS account or online connection should be assumed for a solo demo launch. The demo is described as a self-contained story with solo play and local split-screen co-op; online co-op is not available in this demo. Steam lists Epic Online Services in connection with online multiplayer features of the full game, not as a blanket prerequisite for starting the demo.
If a prompt appears while troubleshooting a solo launch, record its exact wording and the point at which it appears. Do not create an account solely because the demo will not start until you have ruled out the platform, file, runtime and input checks above.
Build a support-ready failure report
No official Hela-specific crash-log location or published crash workaround is established. A precise reproduction record is therefore the most useful next step after the standard diagnostics.
Recommended Free Tools
- Steam app ID: 4553860, and the demo build date if relevant.
- Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU, total RAM, GPU, VRAM and free space on the installation drive.
- GPU driver version and the date Windows was last updated.
- Controller model, wired or wireless connection, and any remapping or overlay software that was active.
- The exact error text, if any.
- Whether the failure happens before a window, at a black screen, during a specific loading stage, in the menu or immediately after a controller is connected.
- Which steps changed the behavior: file verification, a reboot, overlays disabled, controller removed or another controlled change.
Send that record through the developer’s current official support channels. Avoid attaching personal files or security-quarantine contents unless support specifically requests them.
Choose the next step by hardware, stage and input path
| Situation | Priority order | What a result means |
|---|---|---|
| Below the published minimums | Correct the requirement gap or test on a qualifying PC before deeper software analysis. | A failure is not sufficient evidence of a game bug while the machine is outside the listed baseline. |
| At or above minimums, exits before a menu | Updates, reboot, file verification, overlays off, runtime and quarantine checks. | If none changes the result, preserve the exact error and system details for support. |
| At or above minimums, crashes only with a pad | Unplug all pads, test one Xbox/XInput controller, restart Steam, then test remappers individually. | A difference between unplugged and connected runs identifies the input path as the boundary to report. |
| Steam Deck, any stage | Update SteamOS, verify files, test built-in controls without accessories, then isolate one accessory at a time. | Results apply to that Deck configuration; store compatibility remains Unknown. |
| Solo demo and an EOS prompt | Confirm the prompt’s wording and continue platform/file diagnostics before treating an account as necessary. | The demo’s solo and local split-screen design does not require online co-op access. |
Keep troubleshooting changes reversible
- Change one variable per launch attempt and write down the result.
- Re-enable overlays, remappers and extra controllers one at a time after a successful clean test.
- Keep at least the listed free storage available on the demo’s drive while verifying or reinstalling files.
- Do not delete saves or system files as a first response when no official recovery instruction exists.
- Distinguish a general Windows diagnostic from a confirmed Hela fix when you describe the result to other players or support.
The demo was released for Windows 64-bit on 8 October 2026, and Steam lists the full game for 1 December 2026. That schedule does not change the diagnostic steps above, but it helps distinguish the current demo from the upcoming full release when reporting a problem.
