Start by checking Rockstar’s service status for your platform. If there is an outage or maintenance, wait and check again; if services are up, troubleshoot your internet connection and then use the official guide for your PC or console. A status reading of “Up” does not rule out a local network problem, and these steps are troubleshooting checks—not guaranteed fixes.
1. Check whether GTA Online services are available
Open Rockstar Games Service Status and check GTA Online for the platform you use: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or PC. Look for service disruptions or maintenance notices before changing router settings. If Rockstar reports an outage, wait and check the page again later.
Rockstar reported all listed GTA Online platforms operational at 5:20 PM UTC on October 3, 2026. That is a dated status snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability.
If the service is shown as up but you still see errors such as “Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error,” “Timed out locating session,” “Failed to find a compatible GTA Online session,” or “Saving failed,” continue with local network checks. Rockstar notes that connection types can conflict between players, or the issue may relate to your network setup.

2. Check your internet connection
Confirm that your connection is working
- Check whether other websites and online services work on the same device or network.
- Run a speed test. Rockstar lists troubleshooting targets of 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload in its PC and console connection guidance. Meeting those speeds does not guarantee a stable session or diagnose latency, packet loss, or wireless interference.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you play over Wi-Fi and can do so conveniently, connect the console or PC to the router with an Ethernet cable and try again. If the result changes, the wireless connection or its local path may be contributing. This comparison does not prove Wi-Fi is always the cause or rule out an intermittent service problem.
3. Use the troubleshooting guide for your platform
Cache, NAT, DNS, and network-port instructions differ by platform. Follow the guide for your device rather than applying a procedure intended for another system.

Rockstar’s PC connection guide lists these GTA Online UDP ports: 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, and 61458. The console guides have platform-specific network requirements and may list additional ports. Use the exact list and directions in your platform’s current Rockstar guide.
Changing NAT, firewall, or router settings can affect other devices and your network configuration. Do not open every port indiscriminately. If you change a setting, note its original value so you can restore it, and consult the router or platform instructions if you are unsure.

4. Fix the specific “Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded” error
This named PC error is different from a generic stuck loading screen. Rockstar says it occurs when communication fails between Rockstar Games Services and the connection’s IP address. For this error, Rockstar recommends checking your connection and service status, restarting the router, and changing DNS.
Follow Rockstar’s instructions in PC troubleshooting for the “Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded” error. Do not assume this explanation applies to other loading problems.

5. If you are still unable to connect
- Check the service-status page again, since availability can change.
- For a possible internet-service issue or outdated router firmware, Rockstar’s PS4 guidance recommends contacting your internet service provider.
- Open the Rockstar Support guide for your platform or submit a request through Rockstar Support if the problem persists.
What if the game is stuck on a loading screen?
Rockstar’s reviewed connection guides address service status, network setup, and particular connection errors, but they do not establish one universal fix for every indefinitely stuck loading screen. Check service status and your connection first; if neither resolves it, use the support instructions for your platform rather than applying unrelated router changes.
The official guidance reviewed here does not establish that an in-game event itself causes connection failures. Event timing alone is not enough to identify the cause.
