First find where the green frames begin: play the original video outside OBS, check OBS’s preview or a local recording, then check the YouTube playback. If the source file is already corrupted, investigate the file or its decoding; if it looks normal until OBS, inspect the OBS source; if only YouTube’s player is green, troubleshoot the browser or playback device. The right fix depends on that first point of failure.
Locate the first stage where the video turns green
Compare the same portion of the video at each stage. This separates a source-file problem from OBS source handling and YouTube playback. The checks below follow OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation and YouTube’s green screen in video player guidance; they are diagnostic steps, not a guaranteed cure for every green-frame problem.
- Play the original file outside OBS. Use another media player if available. If the frames are green there too, the fault occurs before the OBS scene; test another copy or export of the file and investigate its codec or decoding path.
- Inspect the OBS preview. If the original plays normally but the OBS preview is green, focus on the OBS source and its decoding or color settings.
- Make a short local OBS recording, if practical. If the preview is clean but the recording is green, the problem appears during OBS output rather than in the original file or YouTube’s player.
- Check the YouTube playback. If the original, OBS preview, and local recording look normal but YouTube playback is green, try the player steps below on that playback device.
When asking for help, note the operating system, GPU and driver, OBS version, file container and codec, whether the video is HDR, and whether corruption is continuous or intermittent. These details help distinguish cases; the symptom alone does not identify a specific cause.
Test OBS Media Source decoding and color settings
If you use OBS’s ordinary Media Source, open its source properties and compare playback with hardware decoding enabled and disabled. The option is off by default. OBS labels it “Use hardware decoding when available.” Change only that setting for each comparison, then restore the original value if it makes no difference.

Also inspect the source’s YUV color-range setting. Compare the available settings one at a time, but do not assume a range mismatch is responsible without seeing a consistent difference. OBS documents these controls; it does not claim that toggling hardware decoding or changing the range will necessarily repair green frames.
Media Source supports containers including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. A supported container does not by itself establish that every file inside it will decode correctly.

If the OBS source is VLC Video
This dependency check applies to the VLC Video source, not to the standard Media Source. OBS’s Media Sources documentation says VLC Video uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. Then reopen OBS and compare the source again.
If green frames appear only in YouTube playback
Follow YouTube’s player troubleshooting guidance when the source file and OBS output look normal:

- Try playing the video in another browser.
- For Chrome, turn off browser hardware acceleration and retest. YouTube’s listed steps are for Chrome; consult the browser’s own help for equivalent controls in other browsers.
- Update the graphics driver. For PC users, YouTube directs readers to the computer manufacturer’s driver site.
These steps address green playback in YouTube’s player. They will not fix green frames already visible in the source file or OBS preview.
Check HDR only if you intend to stream HDR
Do not apply HDR settings as a general green-frame fix. YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions describe an HEVC workflow with specific encoder and color-format requirements. For OBS, the documented configuration includes a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, HDR enabled, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Use that path only when the source and system support the required configuration and you are intentionally streaming HDR.

Check performance if the stream also stutters
If green frames accompany stuttering, dropped frames, or an encoding-overload warning, inspect OBS performance indicators and logs. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide treats encoding issues as a workload problem and includes reducing frame rate among possible adjustments. The available guidance does not establish that workload causes green frames specifically, so use this branch only when performance symptoms are also present.
