Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGreen frames are a symptom, not a diagnosis. First find out whether the defect appears in OBS’s preview, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or the replay. If you use the AMD AMF encoder and see green blocks, its FAQ gives one specific setting to try: set Coding Type to “Default.” Other OBS and YouTube settings below are checks for particular situations, not universal green-frame fixes.
Find where the green first appears
Compare the same scene or video at each stage. This practical sequence helps narrow down where the corruption enters the workflow; it is not an official green-frame diagnostic procedure.
- OBS preview: Check the media source or scene before starting the stream. If it is already green, investigate the source, scene, or local rendering path.
- Local recording: Record a short sample in OBS and play it back. If the preview looks clean but the recording is green, focus on the recording encoder, recording format, or playback path.
- YouTube preview: If the preview and recording are clean but YouTube’s Live Control Room preview is green, check the streaming encoder and stream configuration.
- Replay: If the live preview is clean but the resulting replay is affected, compare the replay with your local recording and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Before changing settings, note your OBS version, operating system, GPU, selected encoder, whether the stream is SDR or intentionally HDR, and whether the defect affects recording, streaming, or both.
Apply the AMD AMF check only if it matches your setup
The AMD AMF Encoder project FAQ answers the question “I only have green blocks in my stream/recording!” with: “Set Coding Type to ‘Default’.” See the AMD AMF Encoder FAQ. This is a narrowly applicable instruction for AMD AMF and green blocks; it is not established as a fix for every kind of green frame or for other encoders.

The same FAQ says the hardware encoder supports NV12, and that other color formats may require conversion that can cause poor performance or broken behavior. The page is undated and includes historical driver and version references, so confirm the current options in your OBS setup rather than following legacy steps blindly.
Check general OBS quality and performance settings
These are general troubleshooting measures, not confirmed cures for green frames. OBS’s Help Portal recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a quick way to establish basic settings. For recording, OBS also suggests Simple output mode and recording presets.

- Run OBS as administrator on Windows: OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide says OBS uses the GPU to render and composite scenes. It recommends administrator launch as an initial check when GPU overload is an issue.
- Reduce output resolution if resources are constrained: A lower resolution can reduce encoder load.
- Reduce frame rate if rendering or encoding is overloaded: A lower frame rate reduces the work required.
OBS describes running as administrator as a way to address GPU overload, not a specific green-frame repair. Its Hardware Encoding guide covers NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, with compatibility and trade-offs that depend on the platform and hardware. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but earlier-generation hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Keep relevant GPU drivers current, and do not buy a new GPU based on green frames alone.
Verify YouTube encoder settings without treating them as a guaranteed fix
For streams using RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; recommends CBR; and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709. These are stream-configuration checks, not a diagnosis of green frames. Change them only when your setup or YouTube’s stream-health messages point to a configuration issue.

YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages. For a pre-recorded stream, test a representative section of the video; making a local recording at the same time can help show whether the defect is present before the stream reaches YouTube.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep HDR separate from SDR troubleshooting
Do not switch an SDR stream to HDR settings as a generic green-frame remedy. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance describes a separate workflow requiring HEVC, 10-bit HDR, and compatible source and color properties. Its OBS setup uses hardware HEVC and appropriate HDR profile and color settings. Use that workflow only when your source and intended stream are genuinely HDR; for SDR, follow the Rec. 709 guidance.

Common troubleshooting outcomes
- Green blocks and AMD AMF selected: Try Coding Type set to “Default,” then make a short test recording and stream.
- OBS preview is clean, recording is green: Check the recording encoder, format, and playback path before changing YouTube settings.
- Recording is clean, YouTube preview is green: Check the streaming encoder and YouTube stream configuration, then review stream-health messages.
- Only resource or performance problems are evident: Try OBS’s general performance checks—administrator launch on Windows, reduced output resolution, or reduced frame rate—as appropriate. They are not established green-frame fixes.
- SDR stream with unexplained green output: Keep the stream on its SDR path and verify Rec. 709; do not apply HDR settings without an HDR source and workflow.
