Start by separating the symptom. Brief pauses when you first enter a location can be normal asset and shader streaming in Gray Zone Warfare; repeated hitching, startup crashes, GPU Crash Dump messages, and Steam authorization failures need different fixes. Confirm your PC meets the current baseline, then work from reversible checks (drivers, game files, graphics settings and firewall rules) toward cache deletion, DNS changes or hardware upgrades.
Check the hardware and software baseline first
Many apparent software faults are caused by running below the game’s stated requirements. Valve’s 2024 Steam listing specifies the following baseline:
| Component | Minimum or requirement | Recommended interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | AVX2-capable CPU | A processor without AVX2 cannot run the game correctly; this is a compatibility requirement, not a quality setting. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM minimum | 32 GB is recommended for fewer paging-related hitches while the game, map and background applications are loaded. |
| Graphics | Supported 8 GB GPU class | Use the upscaler appropriate to your GPU and avoid raising texture or resolution settings beyond available VRAM. |
| API | DirectX 12 | Keep Windows and the graphics driver current so the DX12 runtime and shader compiler are up to date. |
| Storage | 40 GB free space and an SSD | An SSD is required. Leave additional free space for shader caches, Windows virtual memory and updates. |
| Network | Broadband internet | Connection quality and server authorization matter more than raw download speed; test wired or stable Wi-Fi before changing DNS. |
If your system has 16 GB or less and the game competes with browsers, recording software or launchers for memory, close those applications before diagnosing a graphics problem. An SSD or RAM upgrade addresses storage and paging constraints; it will not repair a blocked firewall, damaged Steam files or an authorization outage.
Identify which problem you actually have
| Symptom | Most useful first actions | Changes to postpone |
|---|---|---|
| Short pauses only during the first visit to a place | Wait for streaming to settle, update the driver, use an appropriate upscaler and lower the preset temporarily. | Do not immediately delete every cache or reinstall Windows. |
| Persistent low or uneven frame rate | Check the baseline, disable fullscreen optimizations, use exclusive fullscreen, cap frames and start from Low. | Do not raise quality settings before confirming a stable baseline. |
| GPU Crash Dump or EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION | Verify files, align HAGS with the upscaler, clean-install the driver and reset NVIDIA global settings. | Do not change DNS; that cannot fix a local GPU crash. |
| Crash to desktop with no useful log | Remove the WindowsClient configuration folder, clear Steam’s download cache, reinstall the driver and verify files. | Expect graphics settings and keybindings to reset after configuration deletion. |
| Steam authorization or server connection failure | Check firewall and antivirus exceptions, Steam beta status, cache, file integrity, router and DNS. | Disable IPv6 or replace DNS only after the basic checks fail. |
Reduce normal and persistent stuttering
Allow first-time asset streaming to finish
MADFINGER’s May 1, 2024 performance guidance says short frame lags can occur during initial gameplay and when visiting locations for the first time. The game may be compiling shaders or stabilizing streamed assets. Weaker GPUs can take longer. Remain in the game long enough for the area to settle instead of repeatedly closing and relaunching it; performance should improve after those assets are prepared. This explanation applies to brief, location-specific pauses, not stutter that continues everywhere after several sessions.

Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Install the current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer’s official channel. MADFINGER explicitly advises installing the latest graphics driver.
- Restart again, then test the same route or location so you can compare like with like.
Record the driver version before changing it. Patch-specific regressions do occur, so a version that works for one update may not be the best choice after another.
Use a conservative starting profile
The Steam-hosted stutter guide recommends this sequence:
- Locate
GZWClientSteam-Win64-Shipping.exe, open its Properties, choose Compatibility and enable Disable fullscreen optimizations. - Launch the game in exclusive fullscreen rather than borderless or windowed mode.
- Set field of view (FOV) to 55 and cap the frame rate at 120 FPS. A cap prevents the GPU from oscillating between heavily loaded and idle states.
- Select the Low preset first. Play the same area until frame pacing is stable, then raise one setting at a time and retest.
Do not treat 120 FPS as a promise that every GPU can sustain it; it is the guide’s diagnostic cap. If your display or hardware cannot reach that rate, choose a lower cap that remains consistent.

Match the upscaler to the GPU
MADFINGER’s official mapping is a safer starting point than randomly switching reconstruction modes:

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
| GPU category | Recommended method | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Older NVIDIA cards | FSR with Frame Generation, using Performance or Balanced Super Resolution | Start with Balanced; use Performance only when the native workload is still too high. |
| NVIDIA RTX 40-series | DLSS | Begin with a quality-oriented DLSS mode, then lower quality only if frame time remains high. |
| AMD cards | FSR | Use the least aggressive mode that keeps frame pacing stable. |
| Intel cards | XeSS | Test XeSS at a moderate quality level before increasing other graphics settings. |
When testing stutter, change only one of the upscaler, resolution, preset or frame cap at a time. That makes it possible to identify whether the problem is GPU workload, frame-generation behavior or asset streaming.
Remove common sources of frame-time spikes
- Disable NVIDIA Instant Replay and the in-game overlay while troubleshooting.
- Close unnecessary hardware-control and peripheral utilities, especially Razer Synapse and Logitech G Hub, then retest.
- Remove GPU or CPU overclocks. Unreal Engine 5 workloads can expose marginal overclocks that appear stable in other games.
- If you have sufficient free space, allow a 10 GB shader cache. A larger cache can reduce repeated shader compilation, but it does not cure a driver crash or a GPU that is below the baseline.
- Virtual-memory tuning can help a system that is paging heavily; leave Windows-managed virtual memory enabled unless you have a specific reason and enough disk space to set a tested size.
Fix startup crashes, GPU Crash Dump and EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
Follow these steps in order. The first checks are reversible; later steps can reset local settings.
1. Verify the installation in Steam
- Open Steam Library, right-click Gray Zone Warfare and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete replacement downloads, then restart Steam and launch the game.
This is the first response recommended by MADFINGER for GPU Crash Dump and EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reports because a damaged or incomplete file can produce both startup and in-game failures.

2. Align Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling with the anti-aliasing method
Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) can interact with the game’s reconstruction path. Use the combination in MADFINGER Community Care’s November 27, 2025 procedure:
Rank #3
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 1TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
- FSR: HAGS off.
- DLSS: HAGS on.
- TSR: HAGS off.
- XeSS: HAGS off.
For NVIDIA 30-series cards that crash while DLSS is enabled, try HAGS off even though the general DLSS pairing is on. Restart Windows after changing HAGS, then test before changing another option.
3. Perform a clean driver installation
- Download the driver installer for your exact GPU before removing the current driver.
- Run the installer’s clean-install option, or use the manufacturer’s documented clean procedure.
- Restart Windows and launch the game with default graphics settings.
For NVIDIA hardware, open NVIDIA Control Panel after the reinstall and choose the option to restore global settings to their defaults. Set the shader cache size to 10 GB when disk space allows. Avoid applying game-specific overclocks or forced overrides until the crash is resolved.
4. Test background applications
Exit overlays, capture tools, peripheral suites and other nonessential programs, including Razer Synapse and Logitech G Hub. A clean test with only Steam and the game running distinguishes an application conflict from a game or driver fault. Re-enable programs one at a time after stability returns.

MADFINGER’s Update 0.3 notes from 2025 warned that NVIDIA driver 576.40 caused startup crashes for most 50-series users and recommended driver 576.28 at that time. If you use a 50-series card and started crashing immediately after installing 576.40, install the currently supported driver or, if the problem is still tied to that regression, test the documented 576.28 version. Conversely, Community Care suggests rolling back to 576.88 when the newest NVIDIA driver is demonstrably problematic for your installation. A rollback is a diagnostic step: keep the version that is stable for your GPU and current game patch, rather than assuming one number is universally best.

6. Reset a crash-to-desktop configuration
For a crash to desktop without a useful log:
- Exit the game and Steam.
- Delete
%localappdata%/GZW/Saved/Config/WindowsClient. - Start Steam and use Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
- Verify the game files again through Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch the game and rebuild your graphics and keybinding choices.
Deleting this folder resets graphics settings and keybindings. It is therefore more disruptive than changing a frame cap or driver option, but it removes corrupted local configuration that can prevent a clean launch.
7. Capture evidence for a persistent report
If the crash remains, save a screenshot or recording of the error and create a Windows dxdiag report. MADFINGER’s crash prompt can forward crash information to the developer; accept it when offered. The optional GPU crash-debugging tool can provide additional evidence, but it may reduce performance while enabled, so use it only for a reproduction run and then disable it for normal play.
Repair Steam authorization and connection errors
Check local permissions first
- Add both
GZWClientSteam-Win64-Shipping.exeandGZWClientEACto the allowed applications in Windows Firewall. - Check the antivirus quarantine and exception list for the same files. Restore a file only if you obtained it through the official Steam installation.
- Temporarily close VPNs, traffic filters and overlays while testing, then restore them individually after a successful connection.
Authorization errors are failures in communication among the game, Steam and the Gray Zone Warfare server. A firewall rule that blocks either the game executable or its anti-cheat component can look like a server problem.
Reset Steam’s local state
- Opt out of the Steam beta client: open Steam > Settings > Interface, choose the non-beta participation option if one is selected, and restart Steam.
- Use Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam will restart and may require you to sign in again.
- Verify the game files from Properties > Installed Files.
These actions address a stale client cache or mismatched installation without changing Windows networking globally.

- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
Restart the network path
- Exit the game and power-cycle the modem and router according to their manufacturer’s instructions.
- Reconnect and test Gray Zone Warfare before changing DNS.
- If the error persists, open an elevated Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns, then restart the game.
Use DNS and IPv6 changes only as diagnostics
If basic checks fail, test a different DNS resolver. The Steam guide lists Google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), Quad9, OpenDNS, Cloudflare, AdGuard and CleanBrowsing. Only the Google addresses are specified here; use each provider’s current published addresses rather than guessing them. Change DNS on the active adapter, reconnect, and test. If there is no improvement, restore your previous DNS settings.
Disabling IPv6 can also be a diagnostic test when a particular network path mishandles IPv6. Record the original adapter setting, disable IPv6 temporarily, reboot or reconnect, and test once. Restore IPv6 if the result is unchanged; leaving it disabled is not a general performance fix.
Use patch and engine version context when a problem appears suddenly
Gray Zone Warfare changes its rendering and stability behavior through updates. Update 0.3’s 2025 changelog reported 99 crashes fixed and documented the NVIDIA 576.40/50-series startup issue. The October 18, 2026 Update 0.5 development log reports an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.7. After a major patch or engine upgrade, repeat the baseline test with default settings and note the game build, Windows version and GPU driver. A setting that was stable before the update may need a new driver or a different upscaler pairing.
Quick Recap
Know when software fixes are no longer enough
- Upgrade RAM when the game and ordinary background applications regularly exhaust 16 GB and Windows is paging; 32 GB is the stated recommendation.
- Move the installation to an SSD when it is on a hard drive or the SSD is nearly full. The Steam requirements list an SSD and 40 GB of free space.
- Replace or lower the load on the GPU when an 8 GB-class card cannot maintain stable frame time even at Low with the recommended upscaler.
- Do not buy hardware for a network error. Firewall, Steam cache, DNS and server authorization problems require software or network troubleshooting.
A practical order of operations
- Confirm AVX2, 16 GB RAM minimum, an 8 GB-class GPU, DirectX 12, 40 GB free space on an SSD and broadband connectivity.
- For first-location pauses, wait for streaming, update the driver and apply the GPU-specific upscaler.
- For persistent stutter, disable fullscreen optimizations, use exclusive fullscreen, FOV 55, a 120 FPS cap and Low preset, then raise settings gradually.
- For crashes, verify files, set HAGS to match the upscaler, clean-install the driver, reset NVIDIA globals, close background utilities and test a documented rollback if the driver is implicated.
- For silent crash-to-desktop, delete the WindowsClient configuration folder, clear Steam’s download cache and verify files again, accepting that controls and graphics settings reset.
- For connection errors, check firewall and antivirus exceptions, leave Steam beta, clear cache, verify files, reboot the router and flush DNS before testing alternate DNS or IPv6 changes.
- Keep screenshots, a dxdiag report and exact game and driver versions if you need to submit a persistent crash report.
