If Google Wallet is not working, first identify what fails: the app, every contactless payment, one payment card, or a specific pass. That points to the right fix—Android and Wallet settings, device eligibility, your card issuer, or the pass issuer—without needlessly deleting cards or resetting your phone. Availability also varies: Google Wallet is available in over 50 countries and regions, but payment, transit, ID, and pass features depend on the country and the issuer.
What should I check first?
Start with the scope of the problem. If Wallet will not open, focus on the app and Android. If it opens but no card can tap, check the phone’s payment setup and eligibility. If only one card fails, check that specific card with its issuer. If a ticket or loyalty pass is missing, the provider that issued it may control whether it can be added or restored.
Before troubleshooting, confirm the basics for contactless payments. Google Wallet requires Android 9 or higher on the phone. The phone must have NFC, Wallet must be the default contactless payment app, and the phone must have a screen lock. Google Play services and the Wallet app should be up to date. The phone also needs to be Play Protect certified and must not be rooted, running a custom ROM or developer build, or have an unlocked bootloader. Unlock the phone before attempting a payment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Wallet will not open: start with a restart and Android updates.
- No card can tap: check NFC, the default payment app, screen lock, device certification, and whether contactless Wallet payments are available in your country.
- One card fails: check support for that specific card and contact its issuer if setup was declined.
- A pass is missing or will not save: check the provider’s app, website, or email, then contact the pass issuer if needed.
These distinctions matter because a bank cannot fix a device-certification problem, and changing phone settings will not make an unsupported pass issuer link a pass to Wallet.

Use evidence to narrow the cause before making changes. Note whether Wallet opens, whether the failure affects every card or just one, and whether the problem is with a payment or a non-payment pass. If another card works, that points toward the failing card or issuer; if no card works, focus on the phone and Wallet configuration. A pass problem belongs to a different support path from a tap-to-pay problem, even if both appear in the same app.
Why won’t Google Wallet open or respond?
If Wallet will not open, restart the phone and check for Android updates first. These are Google’s initial troubleshooting steps for an app problem.
- Restart the phone. Then try opening Wallet again.
- Check for Android updates. Open the phone’s system update settings and install any available update. The exact label and location can vary by Android device.
- Try the Settings route if Wallet’s home screen is unavailable. Open Settings > Google > All services > Settings for Google apps > Google Wallet.
- If the problem continues, use Google’s feedback or support path. Avoid repeatedly removing payment cards as a substitute for fixing an app that will not open.
If the app opens after a restart or update but payment still fails, treat that as a separate contactless-payment problem rather than assuming the app crash and payment failure have the same cause.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep the scope clear when you contact support: say whether the issue is a crash, a screen that does not respond, or a payment feature that fails after Wallet opens. That helps avoid troubleshooting payment cards when the actual issue is access to the app. If only Wallet is affected and other phone functions work, continue with Google’s app-support route rather than changing issuer-controlled card or pass settings.
Why can’t I tap to pay?
When Wallet opens but contactless payment does not work, check the phone configuration before changing cards. NFC, the default payment app, the default card, screen lock, device eligibility, and the phone’s unlocked state can all affect an in-store tap.
Check NFC and the default payment app
Confirm that the phone has NFC hardware and that NFC is turned on. Then check Android’s contactless-payment settings and make Google Wallet the default contactless payment app. Menu names can differ across manufacturers, so use the phone’s Settings search if the contactless-payment option is not easy to find.
There are two separate questions here: does the phone include NFC, and is NFC enabled? If the hardware is present but the setting is off, turn it on and try again. If the phone does not have NFC, changing the default app cannot make the phone tap to pay. Also confirm that Wallet—not another contactless payment app—is selected as the default.

The first payment card added to Wallet becomes the default contactless payment method. If you have several cards, check which one is selected as the default; you can reorder cards to change the default. Unlock the phone before holding it near the terminal.
This is a useful check when Wallet appears ready but the terminal does not accept the expected card. The phone may be presenting a different card than you intended. Confirm the default before concluding that the card you wanted to use is unsupported, and make sure the screen is unlocked for the attempted payment.

Check screen lock and device eligibility
Make sure a screen lock is set and that the device meets Google’s security requirements. Play Protect certification is separate from whether the app appears to install or open: a phone that is rooted, has a custom ROM or developer build, or has an unlocked bootloader may not be eligible for contactless payments.
If the device’s software has been modified, toggling NFC or changing the default card will not resolve the underlying eligibility issue. The relevant issue is the phone’s security state, not the payment terminal or the bank.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not treat “Wallet opens” as proof that the phone is certified for payments. App access and contactless-payment eligibility are separate checks. If the phone’s software configuration is the issue, a card issuer cannot change that status; first address the device’s eligibility rather than trying to provision the same card repeatedly.
Interpret what the terminal does
If the terminal asks you to insert or swipe the card after a tap attempt, Google describes this as typically a security fallback or behavior associated with an unsupported card network. Follow the terminal’s prompt if you want to complete that purchase, then check whether the card and network are supported for Wallet contactless payments.
One terminal response is useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish that Wallet is broken everywhere. If the same phone and card fail across attempts, revisit the card’s support and phone configuration. If one card fails and another works, the issue is more likely tied to the card or network than to NFC generally.
If you can use Google Pay online but cannot tap in a store, do not treat those as proof that the same feature is supported. Online Google Pay use and contactless Wallet payments are distinct; check the phone’s NFC setup and local contactless-payment availability.
Why can’t I add my card to Google Wallet?
A card’s compatibility depends on the country, issuer, card network, and specific card product. A contactless symbol on a physical card does not prove that the card can be provisioned in Google Wallet: Google says, “Your physical card’s support for contactless payments does not guarantee compatibility with Google Wallet.”
Confirm support for the exact card
Check whether both the bank or card issuer and the specific card support Google Wallet in your country. Support for one card from an issuer does not establish support for every card it issues. If you are unsure, ask the issuer about the exact card product and Wallet setup, rather than relying only on whether the physical card supports contactless purchases.
Check the combination, not just one part of it: country, issuer, card network, and card product all matter. A contactless physical card may work at store terminals while still being unsupported for Wallet setup. Likewise, online Google Pay use does not establish that contactless Wallet payments are available for the same card and phone.

Check the information entered
When adding a card, make sure the name, CVC, and billing address match the issuer’s records. A mismatch can prevent setup even when the card is otherwise supported. Enter the information as the issuer has it on file; if you are unsure what address or details are recorded, ask the issuer rather than repeatedly submitting guesses.
Contact the issuer if setup is declined
If the issuer declines the request to add the card, contact the bank or card issuer. It controls the card’s provisioning decision and can clarify whether the card is supported or why the request was refused. Adding the card through the issuer’s own app or website may also be available.
When you contact the issuer, explain whether you are trying to add the card for contactless payments and identify the exact card product. If the issuer’s app or website offers a way to add it to Wallet, that may be an alternative setup route. If an issuer declines provisioning, changing NFC settings will not override its decision.
If one card fails while another already works in Wallet, focus on the card and issuer rather than changing the phone’s NFC settings. If no card works, return to the device and contactless setup checks.
Why won’t a boarding pass, ticket, or loyalty card save?
Passes are controlled differently from payment cards: the airline, venue, transit agency, merchant, school, or other issuer determines whether its item can be added and what kind of Wallet support it offers. Look for Add to Google Wallet in the provider’s app, website, or email. Some items can also be added from Wallet’s Add to Wallet control, but available categories and steps depend on the item, device, country, and issuer.
Recommended Free Tools
This applies to more than flights. Event tickets, transit passes, health passes, campus IDs, loyalty cards, and gift cards can each have their own issuer and support flow. Do not assume that one kind of pass being available means every item from the same organization—or every pass category in your country—can be added the same way.
If the pass will not save
Google advises that a save problem may be with the pass itself and directs users to the pass issuer. Check the issuer’s original app, website, or message for an updated pass or an alternate way to add it. If the item still cannot be saved, contact that issuer rather than trying to solve an issuer-side problem by changing payment cards.
Look for the add option where the issuer provided the item first: its app, website, or email. Wallet may offer an Add to Wallet control for some items, but the route depends on the pass and provider. If the button is missing or the save attempt fails, the issuer is the right place to ask whether that particular pass is supported.
If a pass is missing or not linked
Some issuers do not support linking a pass to Google Wallet. Users cannot create linked passes themselves, so contact the merchant, airline, transit agency, venue, or other organization that issued it to ask what options are available.

Keep the pass issuer distinct from Google Wallet support: an app setting cannot create a link the provider does not offer. Ask the issuer whether it supports Wallet linking and, if not, what alternative way to view or use the ticket, card, or pass it provides.
How do I get Wallet passes back after changing phones?
Sign in to Google Wallet on the new phone with the relevant Google account. Account-connected loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets, and boarding passes may restore after sign-in; other passes may need to be added again manually.
A factory reset deletes Wallet data from the device. Follow Google’s restoration or transfer steps before concluding that an item is permanently lost. If a particular pass does not return, check with its issuer: restoration depends in part on whether that pass is connected to the account and supported by the provider.
Restoration is not identical for every pass. Give account-connected items a chance to return after signing in, then check the original issuer app, website, or email for passes that need manual re-addition. If an item is not available through those routes, ask its issuer whether it can be restored or reissued. A factory reset removes the device’s Wallet data, so use Google’s transfer or restoration instructions before treating the reset as the final word on an item.
Could my country or phone make Wallet unavailable?
Google Wallet is available in over 50 countries and regions, but that does not mean every feature works in every location. Contactless payments, supported cards, passes, transit, and IDs can each have different country and issuer limits.
Check the specific feature you need in the country where you are trying to use it. For a payment problem, confirm both country availability and support for the exact card. For a pass, check with its issuer. For a phone problem, confirm Android version, NFC availability, and Play Protect certification. A feature working in one country, with one issuer, or on one device does not establish that it will work in another combination.
Eligibility combines several conditions rather than a single global yes-or-no answer. The phone needs Android 9 or higher and NFC for contactless payments, while the relevant card or pass must also be supported in that country. A location where Wallet is available may still have limitations for a particular card, transit service, ID, or pass. Check the specific feature and issuer rather than assuming that general availability guarantees every Wallet function.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I stop troubleshooting and contact support?
Escalate to the organization that controls the failing part. This avoids sending an app problem to a bank or asking Google to restore a pass its issuer does not support.
- Wallet crashes or remains unresponsive after restart and Android updates: use Google’s feedback or support path.
- The issuer declines card setup, or only one card fails: contact the bank or card issuer.
- A ticket, boarding pass, loyalty card, or other pass will not save, link, or return: contact the organization that issued it.
- The phone lacks NFC or does not satisfy Google’s security requirements: address the phone’s hardware or software eligibility; changing cards will not correct it.
When you reach out, describe the scope and the checks already completed. For a card, say whether another card works and whether setup was declined. For a pass, identify the issuing organization and whether you are trying to save, link, or restore it. For an app problem, explain whether Wallet opens at all. This sends the issue to the party with control over the relevant part.

What should I avoid doing?
Match the fix to the failure rather than making broad changes without evidence. Repeatedly removing cards will not fix an app that cannot open, and a bank cannot make an ineligible phone certified. Likewise, a device setting cannot add issuer support for a card or pass.
- Do not assume a contactless physical card is automatically compatible with Wallet.
- Do not assume online Google Pay acceptance means in-store contactless payment is available.
- Do not try to create a linked pass yourself when its issuer does not support linking.
- Do not assume a pass is permanently lost immediately after changing phones or resetting a device; check account restoration and issuer re-add options.
Avoid jumping to a phone replacement before checking reversible issues such as whether NFC is enabled, Wallet is the default contactless payment app, the phone is unlocked, and the correct card is selected. Those settings are different from a hardware limitation or a security-eligibility problem. If the current phone lacks NFC or cannot meet Google’s security requirements, an NFC-enabled Android phone is a later-stage option—not the first fix for an issuer decline or a setting that is simply turned off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a contactless symbol on my bank card mean I can add it to Google Wallet?
No. Physical contactless acceptance and Wallet provisioning are separate support decisions. Ask your issuer about the exact card product and Wallet availability in your country.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I create a linked Wallet pass if the company does not offer one?
No. Google says users cannot create linked passes themselves. Ask the pass issuer whether it supports Wallet linking or offers another way to access the item.
Will Google Wallet work on every Android phone that can install the app?
Not necessarily. Contactless payment eligibility also depends on requirements such as NFC, Android version 9 or higher, Play Protect certification, and the phone’s security configuration.
Why did my loyalty card return but not my event ticket after I changed phones?
Some passes are connected to the Google account and may restore after sign-in, while others require manual re-addition. The issuer can confirm whether a particular ticket can be restored or reissued.
Why does Google Wallet work online but not at a store terminal?
Online Google Pay use and in-store contactless Wallet payments are distinct. Check that your phone has NFC turned on, Wallet is the default contactless app, the phone is unlocked, and the card and feature are supported in your country.
What should I do if the payment terminal asks me to insert or swipe my card?
Google describes this as typically a security fallback or behavior related to an unsupported card network. Follow the terminal’s prompt if you want to complete the purchase, then check the card’s Wallet and network support.
Does changing phones restore every Wallet pass automatically?
No. Some account-connected loyalty cards, gift cards, event tickets, and boarding passes may restore after you sign in; other passes may need to be added again manually through the issuer.
What if my phone has no NFC?
Contactless tap-to-pay requires NFC hardware. If the phone lacks NFC, changing Wallet settings will not add it; consider an NFC-enabled Android phone only after confirming that hardware is the limitation.
The Bottom Line
Start by identifying whether the failure affects Wallet itself, all contactless payments, one card, or one pass. Check Android, NFC, the default payment app, screen lock, certification, and card selection for tap-to-pay problems; ask the card issuer about a declined or unsupported card, and ask the pass issuer about an item that will not save or return. Country and issuer limits apply, so fix the part that actually controls the failure instead of resetting or replacing things without evidence.
