Then compare another app and another device before changing app data or resetting the Streamer. These are Google’s recommended troubleshooting steps—not a guarantee that one particular tweak will fix every 4K buffering problem.
1. Check the Streamer’s network and Wi-Fi band
On the Streamer, open Settings > Network and Internet. Confirm that it is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and the Streamer can connect to 5 GHz, Google recommends checking that it is using 5 GHz for connection troubleshooting. This is a check, not a promise that 5 GHz will perform better in every home: the result depends on the signal where the Streamer sits. 2. Restart the router and Streamer
- Restart your router or modem/router according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Unplug the Google TV Streamer, wait three seconds, then reconnect it.
- After both devices are back online, try the same stream again.
Google includes restarting the network equipment and streaming device among its recommended connection and playback steps. See Google’s connection troubleshooting steps.
3. Check placement and possible interference
For a Wi-Fi test, keep the Streamer and router relatively close and reduce obstacles or nearby electronics. Google’s Wi-Fi setup guidance says the device works best within 6 metres (20 feet) of the router; a separate connection article recommends moving the router within 20 feet. Treat these as suggested troubleshooting distances, not a guaranteed Wi-Fi range or signal threshold. Google also recommends moving the Streamer away from the TV, wires, cables, and other devices that could contribute to interference. 4. Test Ethernet to isolate the wireless connection
The Google TV Streamer (4K) has an RJ45 Ethernet port rated at 1 Gbps and supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. If you have an Ethernet cable and a way to connect it to your network, try wired playback. Google recommends a wired connection as one option for connection problems. If the same stream plays reliably over Ethernet but buffers on Wi-Fi, that points toward the wireless path; it does not, by itself, rule out an internet-service or streaming-provider problem. Google’s specifications list the ports and connectivity, and its connection guidance includes Ethernet troubleshooting.
5. Check whether the issue is your network, the device, or one app
- Try another streaming app. If only one app buffers, focus on that app before changing the whole device.
- Try another device on the same network. If other devices also have connection problems, Google says the router is a more likely source than the streaming device. Check the router’s signal and firmware.
- Check household network load. Google recommends considering whether the Wi-Fi network can support the number of connected devices.
- Update router firmware. Follow the router maker’s instructions for checking and installing updates.
- Consider coverage options only if the checks point to weak Wi-Fi coverage. Google mentions mesh Wi-Fi as a possible way to improve coverage; it is not a default purchase or a guaranteed fix.
Comparing apps, devices, and a wired connection helps narrow down where to investigate, but it cannot establish a diagnosis on its own. Google’s playback troubleshooting article and connection guidance provide the relevant checks.

6. Update the Streamer and address app-specific problems
Check for available system updates and install them, then restart the device and test playback again. Google also recommends confirming that the selected profile matches the one used by the streaming service. If the problem is limited to one app and earlier steps have not helped, clearing that app’s data is a later option. Follow the app’s prompts: clearing data can remove local app state or require you to sign in again. Google’s playback troubleshooting steps cover updates, profiles, and app data.

A factory reset erases all data on the Google TV Streamer. Google recommends trying other troubleshooting steps first, so do not use a reset as an early buffering fix. If you reach this point, make sure you are prepared to set up the device and apps again. Google’s device troubleshooting guidance explains the reset warning and other playback steps.
