If Google Play shows error 495 when downloading apps or updating apps, work through the low-risk checks first: connection, storage, Android updates, and a restart. Then clear the Play Store cache if needed. Google’s guidance covers general Play Store download failures; it does not establish a specific cause or guaranteed fix for error 495.
What Google Play error code 495 means
Microsoft Support lists error 495 among common Google Play Store errors, but the Google Play Help pages located for this issue do not define what causes code 495. They provide general steps for failed downloads, not a confirmed error-495-specific remedy. Claims that 495 always means a cache fault, an account-token problem, or a network issue are not established by those sources.
The troubleshooting order below starts with checks that are easy to reverse and moves toward actions that can reset settings or remove saved information. Android menu names and paths vary by manufacturer and OS version.
Try these low-risk checks first
1. Check your internet connection
Make sure your Wi-Fi or mobile data connection is strong, then retry the download or update. Google recommends using Wi-Fi when available. If you can, try another available connection as a diagnostic check: if Play Store works there, the original network may be involved, but this does not prove a cause specific to error 495. Google’s basic Play Store download troubleshooting covers connection checks.

2. Check available storage
Open your device’s Settings and look for Storage. Google says low storage can prevent apps from downloading or installing and notes that less than 1 GB available may indicate that a device is low on space. That is a warning sign, not a universal minimum for every app. Free space if needed, then try again. Google’s download guidance explains this check.
3. Check for Android system updates
In Settings, open the device’s System or Software update screen and check for available updates. Install an update if appropriate for your device, then retry the Play Store download.

4. Close Play Store and restart the device
- Close the Google Play Store app, open it again, and retry the download.
- If error 495 remains, restart the Android device and retry once more.
Trying these separately makes it easier to tell whether either action changed the result.
5. Check automatic date and time
In Settings, find the date and time controls—often under System—and enable automatic date and time and automatic time zone if they are off. Wait briefly, then retry. Restart the device if the problem continues. Google includes these checks in its general download troubleshooting.

Clear the Google Play Store cache
If the basic checks do not help, clearing the Play Store cache is the next reasonable step. Google calls this its most common solution for problems downloading apps from Play Store. That is guidance for general download issues, not proof that a cache problem causes error 495.
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Go to Apps or Apps & notifications, then select Google Play Store. If it is not visible, use the option to show all apps.
- Open Storage & cache or Storage, then tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Play Store and retry the download or update.

Clear Play Store data only if the cache did not help
Clearing the Play Store’s data or storage is a more disruptive step than clearing its cache. Google warns that it may reset Play Store settings, including parental controls and password protection, and you may need to accept the Terms of Service again.
- Open Settings > Apps > Google Play Store.
- Choose Storage & cache or Storage, then tap Clear storage or Clear data.
- Open Play Store, complete any prompts, and retry the download.
- Check and restore any Play Store settings that were reset.
Labels vary by device. Google’s advanced troubleshooting guidance describes the possible settings changes.

Leave Google Play services data clearing for later
Google Play services is a separate system component from the Google Play Store app. Google says clearing Google Play services data is not recommended until other troubleshooting options have been tried. It may remove saved passwords, transit cards, COVID cards, and virtual payment cards, and can require you to reauthenticate payment methods or sign in to your Google Account again.
Because of those effects, do not treat this as a routine cache-clearing step. If you have exhausted simpler options and still choose to proceed, follow Google’s Play Store troubleshooting guidance and Google’s information about Google Play services for the relevant procedure and warnings.
Remove and re-add your Google Account only after simpler steps
Account removal is another advanced option, not a guaranteed fix for error 495. Google advises backing up important information first because some information is removed from the device when an account is removed. Microsoft Support also suggests removing the account, restarting, and adding it again, but does not establish that this resolves code 495.
If you decide to try it, use the account controls in Android Settings, restart the device after removing the account, and then add it again. Check Google’s advanced troubleshooting guidance before proceeding.

Contact Google Play Help or your device manufacturer’s support team if downloads still fail after these checks. Share the device model, Android version, whether the error affects downloads, updates, or both, and the steps you have already tried. The sources cited here do not establish a code-specific factory-reset remedy, so a reset should not be the automatic next step.
