If Google Maps Timeline is missing, stopped recording, or did not appear on a new phone, start by checking Timeline and location settings in the Google Maps app on the device that records your visits. Then check the app version and, if you changed phones, whether an encrypted Timeline backup is available to restore. Timeline is off by default, and Google says its data comes directly from your device.
1. Make sure Timeline is turned on
Google Maps Timeline is off by default. In the Google Maps mobile app, open your profile menu and tap Your Timeline. Check the Timeline status and turn it on if it is off. Controls and labels can vary by app version.
Google’s Timeline help explains how to manage the feature. If it is already on, continue to the device location checks.
2. Check location settings and Maps permission
Timeline needs the device’s location and access for Google Maps. Confirm that location is enabled on the phone and that Maps has permission to use it. Find these options in your phone’s current location and app-permission settings; the exact names and paths differ between operating systems and versions.

Google also recommends checking both Timeline status and whether Maps can access device location in its announcement about Timeline changes and controls.
3. Update Google Maps, particularly on iPhone or iPad
On an iPhone or iPad, Google’s help page says Timeline is available in Google Maps version 6.93 or later. Update Maps through the App Store if needed, then reopen Your Timeline and check its status. Updating may resolve a version-related issue, but it does not guarantee that Timeline will record or restore data.

4. Check Timeline on the phone that recorded it
Google says Timeline data comes directly from the device and that Timeline is not available in Google Maps on a computer. If the map looks empty on a computer or a different phone, open Google Maps on the phone where the visits were recorded and check the relevant Google account and Timeline there.

This distinction matters when diagnosing missing history: an empty computer view does not establish that the phone’s Timeline is empty. Google’s explanation is in Manage your Google Maps Timeline – Computer.
5. If you changed phones, check for an available backup
Google offers an optional encrypted backup for Timeline. Backup must be enabled separately on each device, and Google says changes can take a few days to appear in a backup. On Android, Google’s instructions say to turn off auto-delete before enabling backup; its iPhone and iPad instructions also document the backup controls and auto-delete requirement.

On the new phone, use the Timeline backup and restore controls in Google Maps to check whether a backup is available. The exact controls may differ by platform and app version. Follow Google’s platform-specific instructions: Android or iPhone and iPad.

An available backup may help restore Timeline on a new device. Google’s reviewed guidance does not establish a way to recover Timeline data that was deleted or never backed up, so do not assume that enabling backup now will bring back older missing visits.

Timeline is separate from other Google account activity controls. Google notes that Web & App Activity may retain location-related activity separately; turning Timeline off or deleting Timeline data does not by itself establish that all such activity has been removed. Review Google’s Timeline and activity controls if your concern is what location-related information remains in your account.
