Most ghosting on a Samsung Odyssey G5 is not a loose cable or a Windows bug. It is VA-panel motion behavior: dark pixels transition slowly, leaving a black trail behind moving objects. You can often make the trail less distracting by using the highest stable refresh rate, selecting the least harmful Response Time (overdrive) mode, comparing FreeSync on and off, and checking the exact cable, input and firmware. You cannot turn a slow panel into a fast one; if smearing remains through those tests, replacement is the only dependable cure.
What ghosting and VA smearing look like
Ghosting is a visible after-image that follows a moving object because the previous pixel value has not reached the new value before the next frame appears. On a VA (vertical-alignment) panel, the most troublesome transitions are usually dark-to-dark changes. A character moving through a shadow, white text scrolling over a dark background, or a camera pan across a night scene can leave a charcoal-colored trail. This is commonly called black smearing.
It is different from ordinary persistence blur. Persistence blur comes from your eyes tracking a moving image while a sample-and-hold display keeps each frame on screen. Ghosting is a pixel-transition error: the panel is still changing when the next frame arrives. A display can show both effects at once.

Its motion methodology also notes that a monitor’s response time cannot be changed. The monitor’s menu can alter the electrical drive applied to pixels, but it cannot change the liquid-crystal material or the slowest transitions built into that panel.

Identify your exact Odyssey G5 before changing settings
Samsung has used the Odyssey G5 name for several generations, sizes and refresh rates. Menu labels, input limits and available strobing modes are not interchangeable. Read the complete model code from the rear label, the on-screen information page or Samsung’s support page before following a setting guide.
| Model or evidence | Known specifications | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| Odyssey G55C S27CG55 (tested by RTINGS in 2025) | 27-inch, 2,560 x 1,440, 1000R curved VA panel, up to 165Hz, FreeSync variable refresh | Its measured motion is poor at every tested refresh rate, and motion was worse with VRR enabled than disabled. |
| Odyssey G50F (Samsung UK product page, 2026 page crawl) | Samsung advertises up to 180Hz and 1ms GtG; other specifications are model-specific | Those advertised figures do not describe the G55C and do not prove clean dark-scene transitions. Use the G50F’s own manual and model code. |
If your screen is a different size or generation, use the table only to understand why a G55C setting may not exist on your monitor. A product name alone is not enough to identify the panel or its port bandwidth.
Use this troubleshooting order
Change one variable at a time and view the same moving scene after each change. A dark-scene game, a scrolling test pattern and white text on a black background expose different kinds of trailing. Record the setting that produces the least visible trail without a bright halo.

- Confirm the model and current mode. Write down the model code, screen size, connection type, resolution and refresh rate. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and verify the active refresh rate. On a console, open its display or video-output menu and confirm the selected resolution and refresh rate.
- Select the highest stable refresh rate. Choose the maximum mode that your monitor, cable, graphics output and game can sustain without black screens, signal drops or frame-rate instability. Higher refresh shortens the time each frame is displayed and generally improves perceived motion clarity, but it does not alter the panel’s underlying response time.
- Test Response Time or overdrive modes. Open the monitor’s on-screen display and change only the Response Time setting. Names differ by generation. For each mode, watch a moving dark object and then a bright object. Keep the mode with the smallest dark trail and no bright outline, white halo or corona. Excessive overdrive can replace a dark trail with inverse ghosting, where pixels overshoot their target and appear brighter than they should.
- Compare variable refresh on and off. Turn FreeSync, or a compatible VRR mode, off and repeat the same test at the same frame rate. Then turn it on and repeat. VRR can remove tearing when frame delivery varies, but its overdrive behavior can change with refresh rate. RTINGS measured worse motion with VRR enabled on the G55C. Keep VRR enabled only when its reduction in tearing is worth the extra blur for your games.
- Verify the cable and port. Use a direct, known-good DisplayPort or HDMI cable connected to the intended monitor input, with no adapter, dock or switch in the path during testing. Confirm that the operating system is actually running the refresh rate you selected; a cable problem often forces a lower mode or causes intermittent signal loss rather than creating true VA smearing. Do not assume another G5 model has the same HDMI or DisplayPort limits.
- Reset unrelated picture processing. If you have changed contrast, shadow detail, sharpness or game presets, restore the monitor’s default picture values and then adjust only Response Time, VRR and refresh rate. Excessive sharpness can make a halo around moving edges more conspicuous, but it cannot create or remove the underlying transition delay.
- Install firmware for the exact model. Samsung’s Canadian support page lists firmware M-C5500GGZA version 1008.3, dated September 12, 2025, for the S27CG550ENXZA support page. Apply that file only if the model code on your monitor matches the support page. Firmware for a different G5 size or generation can be incompatible. Follow Samsung’s update instructions, keep power connected during the process and recheck all settings afterward.
- Try motion-blur reduction only in supported conditions. On the G55C guide, Extreme (MBR) is available at 165Hz over DisplayPort or 144Hz over HDMI. MBR, also called backlight strobing, briefly turns the backlight off between flashes to reduce persistence blur. It does not make a slow VA transition faster. Strobing can introduce visible flicker, lower brightness and interaction problems with VRR, so use it only when the supported refresh and your eyes tolerate it.
- Decide whether the panel is the limit. If the same dark trail remains at the highest stable refresh, in every Response Time mode, with VRR both on and off, and through a valid direct connection, you have probably reached the panel’s response limit. Settings can reduce how noticeable it is, not eliminate it.
Choosing the least-bad Response Time mode
Overdrive raises the voltage used to move a pixel toward its next value. A conservative mode may leave visible black smearing because dark transitions remain slow. A more aggressive mode may shorten the apparent trail in one transition but overshoot another, producing a bright inverse-ghosting edge. The best choice is therefore a visual compromise, not the mode with the most extreme name.

| What you see while a moving object crosses a dark background | Likely interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Wide, dark charcoal trail with no bright edge | Under-driving or intrinsically slow dark transition | Try the next stronger Response Time mode, then retest bright objects. |
| Thin white or colored halo ahead of or behind the object | Inverse ghosting from excessive overdrive | Move back one mode; the halo is usually more distracting than a short dark trail. |
| Trail changes dramatically as refresh rate changes | Refresh-dependent overdrive behavior | Test at the rate you actually use, and do not judge a mode only at the desktop. |
| Streaks remain almost identical in every mode | Panel-limited response rather than a menu setting | Continue with the cable, firmware and VRR checks, then consider replacement. |
Do not treat a quoted 1ms figure as proof that every transition is 1ms. The G50F page advertises 1ms GtG, while RTINGS found the G55C’s motion blurry with noticeable smearing at any tested refresh rate. Advertised or nominal response numbers do not describe the full distribution of gray-to-gray transitions, especially dark ones.
FreeSync and VRR: when to keep it enabled
Variable refresh rate synchronizes the panel’s scan timing with the frame rate delivered by the graphics device. Its main benefit is less tearing and less judder when frame rate fluctuates. It is not a ghosting-reduction technology.
Some monitors use different overdrive behavior while VRR is active because the refresh interval is changing. On the G55C, RTINGS reports that motion was worse with VRR enabled than disabled. That result applies to the tested G55C sample and should not be generalized to every G5, but it makes a direct comparison worthwhile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose a fixed game scene with repeatable camera movement.
- Limit the game to a stable frame rate that your system can maintain.
- Record the result with VRR disabled, then enable FreeSync or compatible VRR without changing resolution, refresh rate or frame cap.
- Keep VRR if tearing is obvious and the additional trail is acceptable; disable it for games where clean dark motion matters more than tear-free presentation.
Run this comparison at the refresh rate you actually use. A result at 60Hz does not predict behavior at 165Hz, and changing frame rate at the same time as VRR makes the comparison inconclusive.

Refresh rate, resolution and connection checks
Windows
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the Odyssey G5 and read the current refresh rate. If the maximum option is missing, check the monitor input, the cable, the graphics driver’s output settings and the selected resolution. The graphics control panel may expose additional modes, but select only a mode the monitor’s manual lists as supported.
DisplayPort versus HDMI
The same G5 model can expose different maximum refresh rates or features depending on the input. The G55C guide specifically lists Extreme (MBR) at 165Hz over DisplayPort and 144Hz over HDMI. That does not establish the limits of another G5. Use the manual for your exact code, connect directly, and verify the resulting mode in the operating system rather than relying on the cable’s packaging.
Consoles and laptops
A console or laptop may cap refresh rate even when the monitor supports more. Select the highest mode offered by the device at the monitor’s native resolution, then check the monitor’s information screen. A lower but stable refresh is preferable to a mode that repeatedly loses signal; neither choice changes the panel’s intrinsic dark-transition speed.
What firmware can and cannot fix
Firmware can correct a control-table error, improve compatibility or change how an overdrive curve is selected. It cannot change the physical VA liquid-crystal response of a panel. Update only from Samsung’s support page for the exact model and regional code, and do not interrupt power during the update.

For the S27CG550ENXZA support page, Samsung lists M-C5500GGZA version 1008.3 with a September 12, 2025 date. That dated file is evidence for that support entry, not a universal G5 update. If your rear label does not match, locate your own support page instead of forcing the file.
When a cable really is the problem
A defective or bandwidth-limited cable usually causes symptoms such as a missing high-refresh option, flickering, sparkles, intermittent black screens, dropouts or a fallback to a lower resolution. Those problems can coexist with VA smearing, so eliminate them before judging motion.
- Test one direct DisplayPort connection and one direct HDMI connection if both are supported by your model.
- Remove adapters, docks, KVM switches and extension cables for the test.
- Use a cable that is known to carry the monitor’s documented resolution and refresh combination.
- After reconnecting, verify the active mode in Windows or the console menu and in the monitor’s information display.
Replacing a cable will not cure a consistent dark trail that appears in every valid mode, but it can restore the refresh rate needed for the clearest result your panel can provide.

Motion Blur Reduction flashes the backlight in short intervals so your eyes see less of each pixel’s hold time. This can make scrolling text and lateral movement look sharper even when the liquid crystal itself is unchanged. Because the backlight is intentionally pulsed, some people see flicker, eye strain or reduced brightness.

On the G55C, the guide lists Extreme (MBR) only at 165Hz through DisplayPort or 144Hz through HDMI. If the option is unavailable, your current input or refresh combination is outside the supported range. Strobing generally cannot operate alongside VRR, and it is most useful for a stable frame rate. It is a motion-clarity trade-off, not a cure for VA black smearing.
How to tell panel behavior from a fault
Panel behavior is likely when the trail is repeatable, follows dark objects consistently, appears on multiple inputs and devices, and changes only slightly with refresh rate or overdrive. A defect is more plausible when you see a stationary bright or dark patch, a line that does not move with the image, severe color contamination, random flicker or new symptoms that were not present before.
Document the model code, firmware version, input, resolution, refresh rate, VRR state and Response Time mode. Photograph or record a repeatable moving scene under identical settings. This information helps a seller or service center distinguish normal VA behavior from a unit-specific defect. Do not assume that a replacement panel will have the same motion characteristics: G5 generations and even panel suppliers can differ.
When replacement is the rational answer
If you have completed the sequence and the G5 still smears in the dark scenes you care about, the limitation is probably intrinsic to its response behavior. A different monitor is the durable solution, but compare measured behavior rather than a single advertised number.
- Dark-transition response: look for measurements that separate dark-to-dark performance from average gray-to-gray claims.
- Overshoot: check whether faster modes create bright inverse-ghosting halos.
- VRR behavior: verify whether motion remains consistent when variable refresh is enabled.
- Refresh at your resolution and input: confirm the maximum mode through the connection you will actually use.
- Strobing implementation: check supported refresh ranges, brightness and whether it can be used with your frame-rate strategy.
- Return and warranty terms: retain an option to return a monitor whose real dark-scene motion does not match its advertised specification.
There is no independent universal percentage for ghosting reduction on the Odyssey G5. Results vary by G5 generation, refresh rate, VRR state, Response Time mode and individual unit, so a promised percentage would be misleading.
