Most GeoGuessr lag, blank screens, missing panoramas, and failed guesses come from one of five places: the browser, the connection, graphics rendering, a current browser incident, or an incorrect system clock. Work through the checks in that order, changing one variable at a time. Start with GeoGuessr’s own web fixes, then test the network and rendering environment before reinstalling anything or reporting a round.
This guide covers GeoGuessr on the web and mobile, including the documented Chrome 148–149 loading problem and the three-games-per-month reporting limit.
Identify the failure before changing settings
The fastest diagnosis is to compare where and when the problem occurs. Record the symptom, the device and browser, and whether changing networks changes the result.

Retest after every change. That preserves the clue that tells you whether the change helped.

Apply GeoGuessr’s web fixes first
GeoGuessr Support describes these as first-line measures for a site that loads slowly, animates poorly, or fails to load correctly. They are reversible and should be tried before changing hardware or buying software.
1. Disable extensions, plugins, and play scripts
Turn off browser extensions, plugins, and scripts used while playing, especially anything that modifies pages, blocks requests, injects overlays, or automates interaction. Reload GeoGuessr and test a complete round. If the problem disappears, re-enable items one at a time to find the conflict.
2. Turn off GeoGuessr animations
Open GeoGuessr’s settings and disable animations. This reduces visual work without changing the map data. Test the same map after saving the setting.

In GeoGuessr’s map-quality setting, switch from Vector to Raster. Raster rendering can be more tolerant of a browser or graphics pipeline that struggles with vector map drawing. Reload the round after changing the option.
4. Compare a different browser or device
Try another current browser on the same computer. Then, if possible, try another device. A successful test elsewhere isolates the problem to the original browser or device rather than GeoGuessr’s account or map.

5. Clear the site cache and perform a hard reload
GeoGuessr’s documented hard-reload sequence is:
- Open GeoGuessr in the affected browser.
- Press F12 to open developer tools.
- Right-click the browser’s reload button.
- Choose Empty Cache and Hard Reload.
This removes cached site resources and immediately requests fresh copies. You may need to sign in again.
6. Reduce the display workload
If Street View is sluggish or the screen goes blank while moving, lower the device or monitor resolution temporarily and retest. A lower resolution reduces the amount of work the graphics system must present, although it does not fix a broken browser incident or a network outage.
7. Verify hardware acceleration
Make sure browser hardware acceleration is enabled. GeoGuessr and 3D map views rely on the browser’s graphics path; disabling acceleration can move that work to a slower software path or expose rendering failures. Restart the browser after changing the setting.
Check the connection and the device
A page can appear to load while panorama tiles arrive slowly or time out. Use these checks to separate Wi‑Fi and device conditions from browser problems.
Restart and relocate the network equipment
- Restart the router or modem, then wait for the connection to stabilize.
- Move closer to the Wi‑Fi router or use a wired connection if available.
- Pause cloud synchronization, video streams, game downloads, and other background transfers.
- Play on another network. A phone hotspot is useful as a short diagnostic comparison, even if it is not a practical permanent connection.
If GeoGuessr works consistently on the alternate network, investigate the original router, Wi‑Fi signal, or local congestion. Do not interpret that result as proof that GeoGuessr itself is slow.

Mobile-specific checks
On a phone or tablet:
- Update the GeoGuessr app and the operating system.
- Force-restart the device.
- Keep 1–2 GB of free storage, the amount GeoGuessr Support specifies for mobile troubleshooting.
- Use Wi‑Fi rather than cellular data for a controlled test.
- Reinstall the app if updates and a restart do not change the behavior.
Storage and app-version problems can prevent resources from being cached or rendered normally. Reinstall only after confirming that your account credentials are available.

Google’s guidance for slow Maps loading is to restart and update the computer and browser. GeoGuessr’s Street View component also depends on a functioning JavaScript and graphics environment.
Use a current supported browser
Full Maps 3D features require a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Update the browser, restart it, and test with GeoGuessr extensions disabled. An old browser can fail even when ordinary web pages still open.
Confirm JavaScript is enabled
Street View and the guessing map need JavaScript. Check the browser’s site settings for GeoGuessr and Google Maps-related content, ensure JavaScript is allowed, then reload. A content-blocking policy that disables scripts can produce an apparently empty map.
Keep Chrome hardware acceleration on
Chrome’s hardware-acceleration setting should be enabled for 3D map features. After changing it, fully quit and reopen Chrome rather than merely closing the tab.

Update Windows graphics components when appropriate
On Windows, installing the latest DirectX may help when 3D content fails to render. This is a compatibility measure, not a guaranteed performance upgrade. Some older graphics cards cannot display 3D features at all; if another current browser and a lower resolution produce the same blank or black view, the graphics hardware may be below the feature’s requirements.
When Chrome 148–149 shows a black screen or missing panoramas
GeoGuessr has a specific known-issue notice for Chrome versions 148 and 149. The symptoms include black screens, missing panoramas, and a guessing map that fails to load. The notice was modified 10 June 2026, so the version range matters: do not assume every Chrome release has the same defect.
The documented workaround is to use another browser while the issue is investigated. Open GeoGuessr in a current Firefox, Safari, or Edge installation, sign in, and replay the affected map. If it works there, avoid repeatedly clearing data or changing hardware settings on the affected Chrome version; the browser switch is the targeted workaround.

A countdown that jumps, expires early, or refuses to accept a guess can be caused by operating-system clock drift rather than network speed. Compare the computer or phone’s system time with time.is, as GeoGuessr suggests.
- Open the device’s date-and-time settings.
- Enable automatic time and automatic time-zone selection where available.
- Synchronize the clock, then restart the browser or app.
- Run a short round and check whether the countdown and guess submission now align.
If the clock is correct and the problem occurs only in one browser, return to the browser, cache, extension, and compatibility checks rather than treating it as a connection-speed issue.

Symptom-specific recovery paths
GeoGuessr is lagging or animations stutter
- Disable extensions, plugins, and play scripts.
- Turn off GeoGuessr animations.
- Switch map quality from Vector to Raster.
- Enable hardware acceleration and lower display resolution if necessary.
- Pause background downloads, restart the router, and compare another network.
- Try another current browser or device.
Stop when one change resolves the lag; leaving every setting altered makes later diagnosis harder.
The map or Street View will not load
- Perform the F12, reload-button, Empty Cache and Hard Reload sequence.
- Confirm JavaScript is enabled and the browser is current.
- Try another browser with extensions disabled.
- Check the network on another connection.
- On mobile, update the app and operating system, free 1–2 GB of storage, and test on Wi‑Fi.
The screen is black or white
First distinguish a rendering failure from the Chrome 148–149 incident. Try another browser, verify hardware acceleration and JavaScript, and lower the resolution. If only Chrome 148 or 149 is affected, use the browser-switch workaround. If all browsers and devices fail on one network, test the connection before changing graphics settings again.
A panorama is missing
Missing panoramas are explicitly included in the Chrome 148–149 notice, but they can also result from an incomplete load. Hard-reload the site, test another browser, and compare another network. A panorama that is absent only in one browser points to that browser’s cache or rendering path.

The guessing map fails to load or the guess is not accepted
For a map that will not appear, use the browser and JavaScript checks. For a guess that appears to submit incorrectly or a timer that is wrong, synchronize the operating-system clock and retest. Keep these two branches separate: a clock fix will not repair a black Street View renderer.
Report a persistent broken round
When a round remains unusable after the local checks, report it from the game summary:
- Open the game summary.
- Select the affected round.
- Choose the report icon.
- Submit the appropriate issue, such as a black or white screen, a lagging or non-loading round, or an unregistered guess.
GeoGuessr’s current guidance limits reports to three games per month. Reviewed reports can restore Elo, so reserve reports for rounds that genuinely failed rather than for ordinary difficult locations. Include the exact symptom and whether you tested another browser or connection; that context helps distinguish a reproducible round problem from a local setup issue.
What not to assume
- There are no independent performance benchmarks in the cited guidance, so no universal frame-rate or loading-time promise can be made.
- A faster connection is not a cure for a disabled JavaScript engine, an unsupported graphics card, a browser-specific incident, or a drifting system clock.
- Reinstalling the app is not the first web fix; test the browser, cache, network, and rendering path first.
- Changing several settings simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
Recommended order for a complete reset
If you need one concise sequence, use this order and retest after each stage:
