If Fortnite will not log you in, leaves you in a queue, or shows matchmaking error #1, #2, or #3 after an update, check Epic’s Public Status page first. An update can coincide with maintenance or an outage, and changing your router cannot repair an Epic-side incident. If Login, Game Services, Parties/Friends/Messaging, and Matchmaking are reported as operational, restart your modem or router and try a public DNS, then retry. Xbox players who see “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue” should contact Microsoft Support.
Start with a five-minute diagnosis
Post-update Fortnite failures usually belong to one of two layers:
- Server-side: Epic is performing maintenance or one of its services is having an incident.
- Local connection: your modem, router, DNS resolution, packet delivery, or latency is preventing the game from reaching Epic.
The correct fix depends on which layer is failing. Use this order so that you do not spend time changing local settings during an outage.

- Open Epic’s Public Status page and inspect the separate components for Login, Game Services, Parties/Friends/Messaging, and Matchmaking.
- Check the official Fortnite status updates or live-issues guidance for a maintenance window or known incident.
- If Epic reports a problem, wait for the incident or maintenance window to be resolved and then try again. There is no reliable published average for queue duration or outage length.
- If the relevant components are operational, treat the failure as a connection issue and continue with the network steps below.
One component can be impaired while another remains operational. For example, you may be able to launch the game while login or matchmaking is unavailable. Do not assume that a working friends list proves that Battle Royale matchmaking is healthy.

Read the symptom before choosing a fix

1. Check Epic’s status and maintenance notices
Use the Public Status page
Look at each component, not only the overall banner. Login, Game Services, Parties/Friends/Messaging, and Matchmaking are reported separately, so a green status for one does not clear the others. Record what the page says before restarting equipment; this gives you a reference if the incident changes while you troubleshoot.
Check Fortnite’s live-issues guidance
Fortnite’s live-issues guidance directs players to the Public Status page and official Fortnite channels for current incidents. If those channels identify an active problem, retrying every few seconds will not make the service recover faster. Wait for Epic to post that the incident or maintenance has been resolved, then sign in once and test matchmaking.
Do not infer an outage from one failed attempt
A failed login can be a transient connection event. Conversely, a successful login does not prove that matchmaking is available. Compare your exact symptom with the component that reports it, and note whether the error affects every mode or only one queue.
2. When services are operational, restart your network
Epic defines a connection issue broadly: anything that prevents use of the Epic Games Launcher or another Epic product. Its examples include being unable to log in, update, matchmake or connect to Fortnite, join parties, or maintain a connection without packet loss and high latency. The documented first actions are to restart the modem/router and try a public DNS.

Restart the modem and router correctly
- Close Fortnite and, on a computer, close the Epic Games Launcher so it is not retrying in the background.
- Unplug the modem and router from power. If your internet equipment is a single combined unit, unplug that one device.
- Leave the equipment powered off long enough for its current session to end, then reconnect the modem first.
- Wait until the modem’s normal internet indicators return. Reconnect or power on the router if it is separate, and wait for its normal network indicators.
- Reconnect your console or computer, launch Fortnite, and test login before entering a queue.
A restart can clear a temporary session or routing problem. It cannot restore an Epic service that is listed as under maintenance, so check the status page again if the same error returns.
Try a public DNS
DNS translates service names into the network addresses your device contacts. Epic recommends trying a public DNS when connection troubleshooting is required, but its guidance does not mandate one provider or one address. Use the network settings documented for your platform or router, replace the current DNS entries with a reputable public resolver, save the change, and reconnect.
- Change DNS in one place first—either the affected device or the home router—so you know which change produced the result.
- Restart Fortnite after saving the setting; an already-running session may still hold the previous DNS information.
- If the change makes no difference, restore the previous DNS entries rather than stacking multiple untested changes.
DNS will not fix packet loss caused by a damaged cable, overloaded wireless link, ISP fault, or Epic maintenance. It is a controlled troubleshooting step, not a guarantee.

3. Retry matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3
Epic says errors #1, #2, and #3 can occur while queueing for Battle Royale, Creative, or tournaments. The errors are mainly caused by server maintenance or a network connection issue, so interpret the number as a clue—not proof that your device is defective.

Test the same mode only after the status page is clear and your network has been restarted. Switching repeatedly between Battle Royale, Creative, and tournaments can make the symptom harder to interpret; record which mode produced the number and whether other modes work.
4. Separate login failures from matchmaking failures
If you cannot log in at all
Check the Login component before changing anything locally. If Login is degraded or under maintenance, follow Fortnite’s official status updates and retry after Epic posts a resolution. If Login is operational, close the game and launcher, restart your modem/router, apply the public-DNS test, and attempt one fresh sign-in.

If the launcher can sign in but Fortnite cannot, that still counts as a connection issue: the game may be unable to reach a different Epic service even though the launcher session exists. Use the component-level status information rather than assuming your account credentials are the cause.
If login works but a match will not start
Focus on Matchmaking and the numbered errors. A working login establishes only that authentication succeeded; it does not establish that the match service, content beacon service, or Battle Bus capacity is available. Check the status page again immediately before retrying.

Xbox: “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue”
Epic’s instruction is explicit: Xbox players who encounter the “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue” message must contact Microsoft Support. This is the appropriate escalation for that exact message. Include the wording verbatim, your Xbox model, the time it occurred, and whether Epic’s Login and Matchmaking components showed an incident.

Other platforms
The supplied Epic guidance does not establish a separate universal fix for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or PC. Apply the same status-first process and network steps. If the problem is limited to a platform account, platform sign-in, or platform network service, use that platform’s support channel after confirming that Epic is reporting its own services as operational.
6. A decision tree for repeated failures
- Is there an active Epic incident or maintenance window? If yes, stop local troubleshooting and wait for the resolution update.
- Is only one Epic component affected? Match your action to that component. Do not treat a Parties/Friends incident as a router failure when Login and Matchmaking are healthy.
- Are all relevant components operational? Restart the modem/router, reconnect the device, and retry.
- Does the problem include packet loss, high latency, failed updates, or party-join failures? Treat it as a connection issue and test a public DNS after the restart.
- Does a numbered matchmaking error remain? Record the number and mode, recheck status, and retry. Errors #1–#3 are primarily associated with maintenance or network connection conditions.
- Is the exact Xbox Epic Services Queue message present? Contact Microsoft Support rather than repeatedly changing Fortnite settings.
This sequence narrows the cause without claiming certainty where the available status information cannot distinguish an ISP route problem from a device problem.

- Do not buy hardware as an outage cure. Epic’s documented remedies are status checks, waiting through maintenance, retrying, restarting the modem/router, trying a public DNS, and contacting the relevant platform support. No official recommendation establishes that buying an Ethernet cable, router, modem, guide, or repair tool will resolve an update-related Epic outage.
- Do not assume the update itself corrupted your account. The timing may reflect maintenance or a service incident that coincided with the patch.
- Do not keep rebooting during a confirmed incident. It adds downtime on your side without changing Epic’s service state.
- Do not treat a single successful screen as proof that everything is fixed. Verify the specific operation that failed: login, party join, update, or matchmaking.
- Do not rely on an invented queue-time promise. Epic has not published a durable average queue time, outage duration, or probability of post-update login failure in the cited guidance.
8. What to record before contacting support
Good evidence shortens the handoff to Epic or your platform provider. Write down:
- The exact error text and number, including capitalization.
- Whether the failure occurs at login, during update, while joining a party, or while entering a match.
- The mode involved: Battle Royale, Creative, or a tournament.
- Your platform and whether other devices on the same connection can use the internet.
- The time and time zone of the failure.
- What Epic’s Login, Game Services, Parties/Friends/Messaging, and Matchmaking components reported at that time.
- Whether a modem/router restart and a public-DNS test changed the result.
For Xbox’s Epic Services Queue message, send this information to Microsoft Support as Epic instructs. For a general login incident, follow Fortnite Status updates while Epic investigates.
