Most Fortnite Creative launch failures are caused by an Epic service or matchmaking problem, a local network or client setting, or an island that was converted entirely to UEFN. Check Epic Games Public Status first. If services are operational, retry in another matchmaking region and work through DNS, router, clock, cache, Windows, proxy, and background-app checks. The exact message—especially matchmaking error #1, #2, #3, or “Failed to start the server in time”—determines the quickest fix.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Write down the complete message and note whether the problem affects one island or every island. Also record your platform (Windows PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or cloud/streaming device), matchmaking region, island code, and the UTC time. Those details separate a service incident from an island publication problem or a local connection fault.

Epic describes matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 as mainly server-maintenance or network-connection issues. The scope test is a practical diagnostic rule rather than an Epic statistic: if only one island fails while other islands load, investigate that island’s publication state; if every island fails, investigate service, account, client, or network conditions first.

A loading spinner, a returned-to-lobby message, and an island that loads without players are different symptoms. Do not apply a destructive fix such as reinstalling the game merely because an island has no visitors. First establish whether the session was created and whether another island can be opened.

Check Epic service health before troubleshooting your device
Open the live Epic Games Public Status page and inspect Fortnite, Game Services, Login, Parties, Friends, and Messaging, and Matchmaking. A green page does not guarantee that your particular island is healthy, but an incident in any of those systems can prevent Creative from starting.
Status information changes while an incident is being investigated. On October 19, 2026, the listed systems were operational. The page also listed scheduled EOS maintenance for November 10, 2026, from 06:00 to 07:30 UTC; during that window, sessions, lobbies, invites, searching, and matchmaking may be unavailable. Treat that date as a scheduled operational notice, not as a permanent explanation for a later failure.
If the status page reports an incident, do not repeatedly reinstall Fortnite or change DNS. Wait for Epic’s recovery, then retry. If no incident is shown, continue with the local and network sequence below, changing one thing at a time so you know which action helped.

Epic’s guidance groups these errors around server maintenance and network problems. They are not a reliable indicator that your account or island data is permanently damaged.
Error #1 is a broad connection failure, so the same checks used for the generic launch message apply. Error #2 points more specifically to communication with the content beacon service; DNS, filtering, and an unstable route are reasonable things to test. Error #3 can clear as capacity changes. Switching region is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee that a distant region will provide better latency.

Fix “We were unable to begin the match due to an error”
Epic says this Creative message can appear when matchmaking is under maintenance or when communication with Epic’s servers fails. Use this order:

- Retry once. Leave the Creative menu, wait a short time, and attempt the same island again. A transient matchmaking failure may clear without a setting change.
- Try another matchmaking region. In Fortnite, open the game settings, find the matchmaking-region control, select a nearby alternate region instead of Auto, apply the change, and launch the island again. Restore your usual region after testing. A successful launch in another region suggests a routing or regional-capacity issue; it does not prove that the island itself changed.
- Use a public DNS resolver. In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet, select your active Wi‑Fi or Ethernet connection, open its hardware or DNS properties, choose Edit beside DNS server assignment, select Manual, and enter the resolver addresses supplied by a reputable public DNS provider. On a console, make the equivalent change under its network or Internet-connection settings. Write down the original automatic setting so it can be restored.
- Restart the modem and router. Shut both devices down, wait until their indicator lights are off, restart the modem first, wait for it to reconnect, then restart the router. Reconnect the gaming device and retry. This refreshes the local connection; it cannot repair an Epic-side outage.
- Synchronize the device clock. Incorrect time settings can interfere with authenticated services. Set date, time, and time zone automatically, then restart Fortnite. Check the setting on the device that actually runs the game, not only on a phone or secondary computer.
- Clear the device or application cache. Use your platform’s documented power-cycle or cache-reset procedure. Do not delete saved Fortnite data unless Epic specifically instructs you; a cache reset should remove temporary data, not your island projects.
- Update Windows, Fortnite, and the platform software. In Windows, use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On consoles, check the system-update and game-update controls. Launch again only after updates finish and the device has restarted. A partially applied update can leave the client and services on incompatible versions.
- Remove proxy interference. On Windows, open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and turn off a manual proxy unless your organization requires it. Also check VPN or traffic-filtering software and temporarily disconnect it for a controlled test. Corporate, school, and parental-control networks may require an administrator rather than a local setting change.
- Flush DNS and reset the Windows Hosts file if name resolution remains suspect. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run
ipconfig /flushdns. If the Hosts file has custom entries, restore the Windows default Hosts file rather than deleting unrelated system files. Record any legitimate organizational entries before changing them. - Disable background applications for one test. Close overlays, downloaders, aggressive antivirus web filters, traffic shapers, and other applications that can consume bandwidth or intercept connections. Re-enable them one at a time after testing so you can identify a conflict.
Epic also recommends allowing its required domains through security software. If you use an antivirus, firewall, parental-control product, or managed network, add Epic Games and Fortnite services to its allowlist using the domain list in Epic’s support documentation. Avoid permanently lowering all firewall protection; make a narrow exception and then test.
Test after each major change. If changing DNS fixes the problem, keep the new setting only if it remains reliable; otherwise return to automatic DNS and report the failure to your provider or Epic. If none of the changes affects the result, restore temporary settings such as the alternate region, proxy bypass, and security exceptions before moving to the next diagnosis.
When every Creative island was converted to UEFN
“Failed to start the server in time” has a specific documented cause: converting all of your Fortnite Creative islands to Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) projects can leave Creative unable to start from the Fortnite lobby. This is different from a general matchmaking outage.
Keep or create a regular Creative island
If you can access the island-management screen, keep at least one island that remains a normal Fortnite Creative island rather than a converted UEFN project. If none exists, create a new non-converted Creative island. Then return to the Fortnite lobby and try Creative again. The purpose is to give the lobby an ordinary Creative destination; converting another project will not help.
Join a friend’s Creative session
Ask a friend who can enter Creative to invite you or let you join their active Creative session. Once inside, create a new ordinary Creative island if the game allows it, leave the session, and retry Creative from your own lobby. This workaround depends on a friend being able to start a session, so it will not bypass a wider service outage.

Launch the project through UEFN
Open the relevant project in UEFN and select Launch Session. This starts the play session through the editor instead of trying to open an all-UEFN library through the Fortnite lobby. If Launch Session also fails, record that separate message; it may indicate an editor, project, or service issue rather than the lobby conversion condition.
Use the documented rollback route when eligible
A member of the Fortnite Developer Program can roll a project back to Fortnite Creative through the documented project-management process. Eligibility and available controls can change, so use the current Epic instructions rather than attempting to edit project files manually. Do not delete a project as an experiment: that can remove content without addressing the startup condition.
These remedies apply specifically to the all-islands-converted scenario. If you have ordinary Creative islands and still receive the message, return to the service-status and network checks; do not assume conversion is the cause.
Why an island can look empty even when it loaded
An empty-looking public island is not automatically a loading failure. A session may have no players because the island is new or has low demand, because its Discover entry is not currently prominent, because player capacity has not been reached, or because your matchmaking region and crossplay settings limit who can join the same instance.
Check whether the session actually started
- Confirm that the island’s terrain, devices, and spawn area appear rather than an error screen or an endless loading loop.
- Use the island’s published code and test it from another account or with a friend, if possible.
- Compare the result in your usual region and one nearby region; population can differ by region and time.
- Try a second published island. If it opens normally, the empty result is more likely related to this island’s demand or publication than to your client.
Separate player population from publication problems
If the island loads correctly but has no visitors, review its public/private state, Discover presence, matchmaking settings, and current player demand. If the island is missing objects, shows an error, or fails for every tester, treat that as an island or publication defect rather than simply low traffic. A code that works for the owner but not for other accounts also deserves a publication and permission check.
Check crossplay and capacity context
Crossplay settings and platform pools affect which players can meet. A low-population region can make a healthy island look deserted, while a capacity limit can prevent additional players from appearing even though the server is functioning. The available player count for a specific island is not established here, so do not infer a universal capacity number. Test at a busier time and with a player on another platform before concluding that the island has failed.

Use scope, timing, and platform to narrow the cause

This comparison is a practical troubleshooting heuristic based on the documented error causes, not a published failure-rate measurement. Platform differences are especially useful: a console and PC on the same home network provide a stronger comparison than two devices using separate networks.
What to do when none of the fixes work
After you have checked status, tested another region, restarted the network, synchronized the clock, cleared temporary data, updated the device, removed proxy interference, and tested without background applications, submit an in-game Fortnite bug report. Epic’s Creative and matchmaking support guidance directs players to bug reporting for persistent failures.
Include all of the following in one report:
- The exact error text, including the number for matchmaking errors.
- Your platform and operating-system or console version.
- The island or map code and whether other islands load.
- Your selected matchmaking region and whether another region changed the result.
- The UTC date and time, including whether an Epic status incident was visible.
- The steps already tried, such as DNS change, router restart, cache reset, or UEFN Launch Session.
- Whether another player reproduced the failure, and that player’s platform and region.
Do not submit multiple nearly identical reports while an outage is active; one precise report with reproducible details is more useful than repeated vague submissions. If the problem affects only one published island, ask other players to test the same code and include their platforms and regions so Epic can distinguish an island defect from a local failure. Keep screenshots of the exact message if it disappears before the report form opens.

What does matchmaking error #2 mean?
Error #2 indicates trouble connecting to the content beacon service used during matchmaking. After checking for an Epic incident, flush DNS, try a reputable public DNS resolver, and check that security or filtering software is not blocking Epic traffic.
