Fix Fortnite in this order: record the complete error, check Fortnite Status and Epic’s known-issues pages, then use the least destructive fix for your platform. On PC, verify files, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache, update graphics drivers, and only then consider reinstalling. On consoles, update the game and system, clear the console cache, reinstall, and power-cycle. Login, download, matchmaking, packet-loss, and latency failures can be service or network problems, so reinstalling the game is not always the right first move.
- Copy the exact error text or code, including punctuation and capitalization.
- Note whether the problem is a crash, update failure, login failure, matchmaking error, packet loss, or high latency.
- Record your platform and whether the problem started immediately after a Fortnite or system update.
- Check Fortnite Status and Epic’s Fortnite Community Issues information before deleting files or reinstalling.
Start with the exact error and service status
The fastest route to a fix is to identify what failed before changing anything. Epic Games Help says, “If you see a specific error message in Fortnite, try this first: Copy the full error message.” Paste that wording into Epic’s support search, then check the Fortnite Community Issues page for a known issue or workaround.
Record the failure precisely
- Error: write the full message or numeric code rather than a shortened description such as “it will not work.”
- Platform: specify Windows PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch.
- Timing: note whether it began after a Fortnite update, an operating-system update, a graphics-driver update, or without any change.
- Stage: record whether Fortnite crashes at launch, while joining a match, during an update, at login, or after reaching the lobby.
- Pattern: note whether every account and device is affected or only one account, one console, or one computer.
Rule out an outage before local repairs
Check Fortnite Status and Epic’s known-issues information before repeatedly restarting the launcher or reinstalling the game. Epic has documented incidents in which login and update failures were investigated centrally and later marked resolved. During an incident, a local reinstall cannot repair the service that is unavailable.
Classify the symptom before choosing a fix

PC crashes and launch failures: use an escalation ladder
Work from the lowest-impact step to the most disruptive one. Launch Fortnite after each step so you know which change mattered. Reinstalling or deleting configuration data can remove local settings, so do not jump to those actions while a reversible repair is still available.

1. Confirm that the PC meets Fortnite’s current requirements
Compare the computer with Epic’s current minimum requirements for the installed Fortnite version. Check the operating-system edition, processor, memory, graphics hardware, graphics-driver support, and available storage. A computer that no longer meets the current minimum cannot be made reliable by verifying files or changing a launcher setting. If requirements are met, continue with software repairs; if they are not, address the hardware or operating-system limitation first.
2. Verify Fortnite’s files
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Open the menu for Fortnite, choose Manage, and select Verify.
- Allow the scan to finish and let the launcher replace damaged or missing files.
- Start Fortnite without running other repair steps at the same time.
Verification is safer than deleting the installation because it checks the existing copy and repairs what the launcher can identify. It may take time and require free storage for replacement files.
3. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
A stale launcher cache can interfere with sign-in, downloads, updates, or the handoff that starts Fortnite. Exit Fortnite and the launcher completely, including any Epic process still running in the notification area or Task Manager. Use Epic’s cache-clearing procedure for the installed launcher, then reopen it and try the update or launch again. Clearing the cache does not replace the game installation, but it can require the launcher to sign in again.

Install a graphics driver supported by your GPU manufacturer and restart Windows before testing. Epic specifically notes that hitching and crashing after an update may be caused by the graphics driver. If a normal update does not help, use the manufacturer’s clean or reinstall option where available, then test Fortnite with default graphics settings.
5. Test launcher permissions and background software
Run the Epic Games Launcher as administrator once to determine whether permissions are blocking an update or launch. This is a diagnostic step, not a reason to run every program with elevated rights permanently. Also close overlays, recording tools, RGB utilities, aggressive antivirus scans, and other background applications one group at a time. If Fortnite works after a specific application is closed, restore applications individually to identify the conflict instead of disabling security software indefinitely.

6. Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher
Use this only after requirements, file verification, cache clearing, drivers, permissions, and background-app testing. Uninstall and reinstall the launcher using Epic’s current installer, then sign in and allow it to rediscover or reinstall Fortnite as required. Confirm that you know where the game is installed and that you have enough free storage before starting.
7. Reinstall Fortnite
A full game reinstall is appropriate when verification cannot repair the installation or the launcher repeatedly fails with damaged files. It removes a large local installation and can consume substantial download time and bandwidth. Record your error and any useful logs first, and make sure your account credentials and two-factor authentication method are available before uninstalling.
8. Review security exclusions cautiously
Epic’s PC workflow includes adding the Fortnite folder to a security exclusion list where appropriate. This can help when security software is quarantining or blocking legitimate game files, but it lowers protection for that folder. Use the narrowest folder-specific exclusion, keep Windows and security definitions current, and remove the exclusion if it does not resolve the problem. Never disable protection globally as a routine fix.
9. Try another drive only when storage or drive behavior is suspect
Installing Fortnite on another internal drive can distinguish an installation or storage problem from a game-wide issue. Do this only after software repairs, because moving a large game is disruptive and does not fix an outage, account problem, or network failure. Make sure the alternate drive has sufficient free space and is healthy.
10. Check the drive for errors
Use Windows’ supported drive-error checking tools for the volume containing Fortnite. Back up important files before any repair that could expose an underlying disk problem. Repeated crashes, corrupted downloads, or unexplained verification failures after a drive check justify hardware support rather than endless reinstalls.

11. Remove the local FortniteGame folder as a last PC step
If the earlier steps fail, Epic’s workflow includes removing the %localappdata%FortniteGame folder. This is more destructive than clearing a cache: it can reset local configuration and settings. Close the launcher and Fortnite, back up the folder if you may need its contents for diagnostics, remove it, and relaunch so Fortnite can create fresh local data. Do not use this step to bypass an active service incident.
When crashes begin after a Fortnite update
A post-update crash deserves a narrower procedure before a complete reinstall. First confirm that the PC still meets the current minimum requirements. Then reset the Windows client configuration exactly as Epic specifies:
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open
%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. - Delete the
GameUserSettingsfile. - Relaunch Fortnite and allow it to create a new settings file.
This resets local graphics and gameplay preferences, so you may need to configure them again. If the crash or severe hitching continues, update or reinstall the graphics driver. Epic identifies the driver as a possible cause of post-update hitching and crashing. If the issue started for many players at once, check Fortnite Status and Community Issues before making further local changes.
Fix Fortnite update errors and a download stuck on checking
Separate service, network, and local installation causes
An update that appears frozen can reflect an Epic service incident, a launcher cache problem, a network interruption, insufficient storage, permissions, or damaged local files. The same screen can therefore require very different fixes. Capture the exact wording and percentage, check service status, and confirm that the installation drive has adequate free space before cancelling the update.
Use a low-risk sequence
- Check Fortnite Status and Epic’s known-issues information.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher completely, then retry once.
- Restart the modem or router if other downloads or Epic services are also failing.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Verify Fortnite’s files from the launcher’s Library management menu.
- Check for operating-system, launcher, and graphics-driver updates.
- Only then consider reinstalling the launcher or Fortnite.
Do not repeatedly cancel and restart a large download during a service incident. That can make it harder to tell whether the problem is local and may leave partial files that must be checked again.

Fix login failures without assuming the game is corrupted
“Login failed” can be caused by Epic authentication, a platform service, an account-specific issue, a network path, or an outage. Reinstalling Fortnite does not repair credentials or a service-side authentication failure.
Check the account and platform path
- Copy the complete login error and search Epic’s support documentation with that exact text.
- Check Fortnite Status and the relevant platform’s service status.
- Confirm that the Epic account and console account are the ones normally linked to Fortnite.
- Test whether the Epic Games Launcher itself can sign in; if the launcher cannot authenticate, focus on account or connection troubleshooting before touching game files.
- Retry after a short interval when status pages show an active incident or maintenance.
If only one account fails while another account can reach the lobby on the same device and network, preserve the exact message and contact Epic support. If every account and device on the same network fails, investigate service or network causes first.
Console crashes and update errors
Console troubleshooting is constrained by the closed platform, so use the platform’s own maintenance controls and contact the manufacturer when those controls do not resolve the problem.
- Search the exact Fortnite error text or code.
- Check for a Fortnite update from the console’s game-management screen.
- Install pending PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch system updates.
- Clear the platform cache using the manufacturer’s supported procedure for your console model.
- Restart Fortnite and test the same action that previously failed.
- Reinstall Fortnite if the update or crash persists after the cache and system steps.
- Power-cycle the console: shut it down fully, disconnect power according to the manufacturer’s guidance, wait briefly, reconnect, and start it again.
- Contact PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support if the console continues to crash, cannot install other software, or reports storage or system errors.
Keep the exact error, console model, system version, and time of failure when contacting support. A console-wide storage or operating-system fault needs platform support; reinstalling Fortnite alone will not repair it.
Connection, matchmaking, packet-loss, and latency problems
Epic defines a connection issue as anything that prevents use of the Epic Games Launcher or another Epic product, including logging in, downloading or updating games, matchmaking, joining parties, or maintaining a connection without packet loss or high latency. These symptoms point toward service or network troubleshooting rather than a damaged Fortnite installation.

Restart the local network
- Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher.
- Restart the modem and router using their normal power controls.
- Wait for the connection to return fully, then test another online service.
- Retry Fortnite and note whether the failure affects login, matchmaking, party joining, or in-match stability.
If other devices also lose connectivity, work with your internet provider or router manufacturer. If only Fortnite is affected, compare the result with Fortnite Status and Epic’s known-issues information.
Use Epic’s DNS guidance when name resolution is suspected
Epic publishes public-DNS troubleshooting instructions for connection problems. Follow that guide for your operating system or console rather than copying unverified DNS addresses from a forum. DNS changes affect the whole device or network path, so record the original settings and restore them if the change makes no difference.
Distinguish latency from a crash
- High latency: actions arrive late, but the game may remain responsive.
- Packet loss: players or objects may disappear, movement may snap backward, or voice and party connections may drop.
- Crash: Fortnite closes or freezes locally, often with an application or system error.
Do not use a graphics-driver reinstall to treat packet loss, and do not reinstall Fortnite to treat an outage. Match the repair to the symptom and confirm the result in the same game mode and network conditions.

Choose the right fix by platform, timing, and reversibility

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Escalate when the exact error remains after the platform-appropriate sequence, when multiple games fail, when the console or drive reports hardware errors, or when status information indicates an account or service problem. Include the platform, system version, Fortnite version if shown, complete error text, start time, steps already taken, and whether another network or account changes the result.
Avoid destructive changes while an outage is active. Keep a record of configuration files before deleting them, do not leave broad security exclusions enabled, and do not repeat a reinstall that has already proved unrelated to the symptom. The evidence you collect determines whether the next owner is Epic, the console manufacturer, your network provider, or a hardware manufacturer.
