Start by identifying your platform and the exact symptom: a launch crash, an error message, hitching, low FPS, or a graphics problem can call for different fixes. Check Epic’s current known issues before changing local settings; if there is no matching issue, follow the steps for your platform below, starting with the least disruptive checks.
Before troubleshooting: check for a known issue
An update can introduce a problem affecting many players, and a local reinstall will not necessarily fix it. Check Fortnite Community Issues, Epic Games status, and the update information at Fortnite Status for a current incident or workaround. Known-issue status changes, so a report about an earlier update is not proof that the same problem is active now.
If Fortnite shows an exact error, search Epic’s Fortnite support help for that wording first. An error-specific article may offer a more relevant fix than general crash steps.
Fix Fortnite crashes after an update on PC
Work through these steps in order. Epic’s recommendations are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.

- Check system requirements. Compare your PC with Fortnite’s current minimum requirements in Epic’s technical troubleshooting guide. A system below the minimum may not run the game reliably.
- Verify the game files. In the Epic Games Launcher, open your Library, find Fortnite, select the three-dot menu, and choose Manage > Verify. Let the check finish, then try launching the game.
- Clear the launcher cache if the crash continues. Close the Epic Games Launcher completely before clearing its cache. Follow Epic’s current instructions in its PC troubleshooting guide, then reopen the launcher.
- Update the graphics driver. Get the latest compatible driver from your graphics-card maker. Epic says a graphics driver may contribute to hitching or crashing after an update, and recommends updating or reinstalling it as a possible fix; it is not the cause in every case. - Reset the targeted local settings file for a post-update crash. Close Fortnite, press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient, and press Enter. Delete theGameUserSettingsfile in that folder, then relaunch Fortnite. This removes a local settings file; the game can create a new one when it starts. Epic gives this step for crashes after a PC update in its Fortnite crashes after PC update article.
If the problem persists, Epic’s broader sequence includes running the launcher as administrator, addressing background applications, checking the drive, trying another installation drive, reinstalling the game or launcher, and contacting the hardware manufacturer where appropriate. These are later steps because they take more time or change more of your setup; see the full PC troubleshooting sequence.
Fix Fortnite hitching, low FPS, or graphics problems on PC
For hitching, frame drops, or low FPS
Epic’s Windows performance recommendations include choosing the high-performance GPU, selecting a performance power plan, enabling Game Mode, and turning off Xbox Game Bar. Find the current instructions and applicable Windows settings in Epic’s Fortnite performance guide. Change one setting at a time and check whether the symptom changes.

For visual problems, freezes, or black screens
First check that the PC meets Fortnite’s requirements and review the in-game video settings. Epic suggests starting with Low quality settings, then adjusting gradually if that improves the issue. On a laptop or a PC with more than one GPU, make sure Fortnite uses the high-performance graphics processor. See Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance.
If DirectX 12 is associated with crashes, freezes, or black screens, Epic says switching to Performance Mode may help. Launcher command-line instructions can change, so use the live directions in Epic’s graphics support article rather than relying on an old command or setting path.

If the problem appears only after extended play
Overheating is worth considering when graphics problems emerge after the PC has been running a demanding game for a while; it should not be assumed to explain every crash that follows an update. Check that vents are unobstructed, remove dust from fans and airflow areas, and use the PC in a well-ventilated space. Epic’s graphics-card overheating guidance describes these airflow checks.

Console steps differ from PC troubleshooting. Epic recommends checking for current known issues, updating the game and console, clearing the console cache, and power cycling before reinstalling. Follow the platform-specific instructions in Epic’s technical troubleshooting guide.

- Check Epic’s known-issue channels and the game’s status information for an active incident or workaround.
- Check for and install any Fortnite update.
- Check for and install any PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch system update.
- Clear the console cache using the platform maker’s current instructions; the procedure varies by console.
- Power cycle the console, then launch Fortnite again.
- If the problem remains, reinstall Fortnite.
If a closed-console issue persists, contact the relevant platform’s support service. For PS5 or Xbox Series X|S issues that do not match a known issue, Epic also recommends submitting an in-game bug report so the team receives logs; see its troubleshooting guidance.

When to escalate instead of repeating fixes
- A matching widespread issue is listed: use Epic’s posted workaround and monitor its status information rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
- An exact error appears: look up that error in Epic’s support help and follow its specific instructions.
- PC steps do not resolve a crash: use Epic’s full technical sequence and contact the hardware maker if its guidance points to a device or component issue.
- A console issue continues: contact the platform’s support service; for the specified newer consoles, submit an in-game report when no known issue matches.
