If Fortnite won’t connect, first check Epic Games Server Status and ask your internet provider whether service is degraded in your area. If both are healthy, run your device’s network test, then follow the steps for your platform and symptom. This order helps separate an Epic outage, a home-network problem, and a Fortnite-specific sign-in, matchmaking, or party error.
Start by checking whether the problem is local or widespread
- Check Epic’s service status. Look for Fortnite or Epic Games Launcher incidents on Epic Games Server Status. A system-wide issue can prevent Fortnite or the Launcher from connecting, and changing your router settings will not resolve it.
- Check your internet provider’s service. Ask whether there is an outage or degradation affecting your area. If other devices or online services at home are also struggling, that points toward the connection or ISP rather than Fortnite alone.
- Compare devices on the same network. If Fortnite fails on multiple devices using your home network, focus on the router, connection, or ISP. If only one device has trouble, use its network test and platform-specific steps below.
Run your console’s network test
Epic directs console players to the network diagnostics and support instructions from the console maker. Use the current official pages rather than relying on menu paths that can change:
- Xbox: Xbox network connection troubleshooting.
- PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5: PlayStation connection troubleshooting.
- Nintendo Switch: Nintendo’s Internet Connection Test instructions.
If the console’s test fails, follow the platform’s recommended network steps before changing Fortnite settings. For PlayStation, Epic recommends a wired LAN connection in its connection guidance. Ethernet is an option when Wi-Fi seems unstable, but it cannot fix an Epic outage, ISP degradation, or every cause of packet loss.
Fix Fortnite connection problems on PC
Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide covers the Epic Games Launcher and Windows networking. Work through the checks that match your setup; restart the router before moving on to Windows changes.

- Restart the modem and router. Power them off, wait briefly, then turn them back on and let the connection return before testing Fortnite.
- Try a public DNS service. Epic includes switching to public DNS in its connection checks. Follow the DNS provider’s current Windows setup instructions, and record your existing settings so you can restore them if needed.
- Check your device clock. Make sure Windows date, time, and time zone are correct and synchronized.
- Check domain access and proxies. Confirm that required Epic domains are not being blocked by network filtering, and identify and disable a proxy server if one is configured and not required by your network.
- Reset the device cache and update Windows. Apply Epic’s cache-reset guidance for your device, then install available Windows updates and restart.
- Flush Windows DNS. Epic includes flushing the DNS resolver cache among its Windows connection steps. Use the command and instructions in its linked guide, which are less likely to become stale than a copied command here.
- Check the Windows Hosts file. Epic recommends resetting it if entries may be interfering with connections. Follow the official guide carefully because the file affects how Windows resolves addresses.
- Check Epic Games Launcher files where applicable. Use Epic’s instructions for the Launcher-specific file adjustment only when it applies to your issue.
- Temporarily close background applications. VPNs, filters, or other applications that alter network traffic can interfere. Close likely candidates one at a time and retest; restore anything you need afterward.
If Xbox displays “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue,” Epic’s stated escalation is to contact Microsoft Support.
Check for packet loss and high latency
Fortnite’s Net Debug Stats can help distinguish a network-quality problem from a sign-in or party error. In the Fortnite lobby, open Settings > Game UI, turn on Net Debug Stats, and apply the change. The network details appear in the upper-left corner. Epic says red bars beneath the network stats indicate packet loss and advises contacting your ISP about the connection.

The word “Disabled” may appear among the details without affecting play. If that repeated label is distracting, turn Net Debug Stats off. If the stats show packet loss, compare with your console or PC network test and ask your ISP about local line or service problems; changing game settings alone may not address the cause.

“Unable to sign in to your Fortnite account” on PlayStation
For PlayStation sign-in failures, Epic’s sign-in guidance recommends checking both PlayStation and Epic service status, restarting the modem and router, clearing the PlayStation cache, trying public DNS, and signing out of and back into PlayStation Network. If the problem remains, contact PlayStation Support.

“Unable to join other parties” or party error -91
Epic’s error -91 guidance lists several possible fixes because the issue can involve service status, game files, console cache, crossplay, NAT, or the local network:
- Check Epic service status.
- On PC, verify Fortnite’s game files; on console, clear the console cache.
- On PlayStation or Xbox, check the crossplay setting.
- Use the platform maker’s NAT troubleshooting guidance if NAT appears to be the issue.
- Restart the router and the device.
These steps are specific to party error -91; they are not universal fixes for every connection failure.
