Fix Football Manager 27 in a controlled order: remove every add-on, reset the game’s cache and preferences, verify the installation, then test graphics drivers, conflicting software and antivirus. On Windows, an empty Sports Interactive user folder is the decisive test for corrupted saves, settings or graphics data. If the failure continues, send SEGA or Sports Interactive the exact error, system details, crash dump and a save from just before the failure.
The procedure below applies the official Football Manager troubleshooting sequence while separating launch failures, black screens, crashes during play and failures on a particular in-game date. FM27-specific minimum requirements, error codes and known issues should be checked on the live FM27 store and support pages because the franchise guidance does not establish them.
Start with this repair order
Work through the steps in order and relaunch Football Manager 27 after each meaningful change. This prevents several changes from hiding the real cause and keeps your support report useful.
- Back up saves and custom files, record the exact symptom and note your platform and launcher.
- Remove custom graphics, logos, skins, facepacks, editor files and other add-ons.
- Delete or move the Football Manager cache and preference folders using the current platform-specific SEGA instructions.
- Verify the game’s installation files in Steam or the launcher that installed it.
- Install the current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer and restart the computer.
- Test for software conflicts and antivirus blocking, re-enabling protection after the test.
- On Windows, test with an empty
DocumentsSports Interactive[Football Manager title]folder. - Escalate with crash dumps, exact error text, system information and the relevant save when the standard tests do not resolve the problem.
Protect your saves before troubleshooting
Cache and preference resets are reversible only if you keep a copy of your personal data. Before deleting or moving anything, copy your saves, tactics, graphics, editor files and other custom content to a temporary folder outside the Football Manager directory. Do not overwrite that backup while testing.

Write down the trigger in precise terms: does the game fail before the main menu, freeze on a black screen, close when you click Play, crash only during a match or fail when advancing to one particular date? Record the operating system, hardware, launcher and any text in the dialog. A support team can route a precise symptom much faster than a report that simply says the game will not work.
Remove add-ons first
Custom content is the safest isolation test because it changes the game without changing Windows or the installation. Temporarily remove custom graphics, logos, skins, facepacks, editor files and any other downloaded or created additions. Put them in the backup folder rather than deleting them.
Test a completely unmodified launch
- Close Football Manager 27 and its launcher.
- Move all add-on content out of the folders used by the game.
- Launch the game and try the action that previously failed.
- If the game now works, return one category of files at a time and retest.
Restoring files in small groups identifies the trigger. For example, return the skin alone, test, then graphics, then editor files. Once a failure returns, divide that group again until one file or pack is responsible. Keep the working configuration as your baseline while deciding whether to replace or remove the offending content.
Reset cache and preferences safely
Football Manager stores temporary data and user preferences that can become inconsistent after an update, a failed write or a changed configuration. SEGA lists removing the cache and preference folders as an early remedy for launch problems.
Use the current platform instructions
Folder locations and names differ between Windows and macOS and can change between Football Manager versions. Follow the current platform-specific cache and preference instructions from SEGA rather than deleting a similarly named folder at random. Move the folders to your backup location when possible; this gives you a rollback if a setting or custom file was needed.

- Exit the game and launcher completely.
- Back up the cache and preference folders.
- Remove or move only the folders identified in the current SEGA instructions.
- Start Football Manager 27 again so it can create clean folders.
- Test before restoring custom settings or add-ons.
A first launch after the reset may take longer while temporary data is rebuilt. If the game still fails in exactly the same way, continue to file verification instead of repeatedly deleting the same folders.
Verify the installation files
Verification checks whether files in the installed game are missing or damaged. Use the file-verification function in Steam or the launcher that installed Football Manager 27. The label and menu location vary by launcher, so use that launcher’s current support instructions.

What verification can and cannot fix
Verification can replace a damaged installation file, which is useful when the game closes immediately, reports missing data or stopped launching after an update. It does not remove a broken skin, save, preference or editor file in your Documents folder; those are handled by the add-on and clean-folder tests.
- Close Football Manager 27.
- Open the installed game in your launcher’s library.
- Choose the launcher’s command to verify or repair installation files.
- Allow the process to finish and accept any file replacement it reports.
- Relaunch without add-ons and repeat the original failing action.
Update the graphics driver, then test conflicts
Outdated graphics drivers can contribute to launch failures and black-screen freezes. On Windows, install the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer, restart the computer and test again. Do not judge the result until after the restart, because the new driver may not be active before then.
Check conflicting software
Overlays, capture tools, hardware utilities, security products and other background programs can interfere with a game or its launcher. Close suspected conflicts according to the vendor’s instructions and test with the smallest practical set of programs running. Change one category at a time so you know which test affected the result.

Check antivirus blocking without leaving protection off
Antivirus software can block Steam, the Football Manager executable or a file the game needs to create. Consult the antivirus vendor’s instructions for a temporary, controlled test or an appropriate allow-list entry. Re-enable protection immediately after the test and do not download replacement files from unofficial sources to bypass a warning.

Use a clean Sports Interactive folder on Windows
A clean user-data test separates corrupted saves, settings and graphics data from an installation or system problem. This is different from verifying installation files: it leaves the installed game intact while temporarily removing the user folder’s contents.
Windows procedure
- Close Football Manager 27 and the launcher.
- Create a temporary backup folder in a separate location.
- Move the contents of
DocumentsSports Interactive[Football Manager title]into that backup, leaving the original Football Manager folder empty. - Launch the game and test the failing action before copying anything back.
- If it works, restore saves, graphics and other files in stages, testing after each stage.
If the clean folder fixes the problem, the cause is in the moved user data rather than the basic installation. Restore only what you need and stop when the failure returns; the last group restored contains the likely trigger. Keep the known-good backup until you have completed several launches and saves.
macOS procedure
The reviewed SEGA guidance for Mac users is to remove the relevant cache and preference data, verify the installation files and, if the issue remains, provide System Information when contacting support. Do not apply the Windows folder move to macOS; use the current Mac-specific instructions instead.

Route exact launch-error messages
The wording of a dialog is a routing clue. SEGA’s launch-error guidance covers the following families; open the corresponding SEGA article when one is available instead of treating every message as a generic crash.

Copy the error exactly, including punctuation and capitalization. Similar-looking messages can require different remedies, and paraphrasing removes the clue support staff need.
When a date-specific crash needs a save and dump
A crash that occurs as the calendar advances to one particular date is different from a general launch failure. First complete the add-on, cache, preference, file-verification and clean-folder tests so that corrupted user data and installation problems are not mistaken for a date event.
Then create a support package containing a crash dump and a save made immediately before the failure. Do not overwrite that pre-crash save by repeatedly advancing past the date. Describe the exact date, the in-game action that advances time and whether the crash happens on every attempt with the same file.

Prepare a complete SEGA or Sports Interactive support report
Sports Interactive describes an exit with a dialog directing you to support as a crash notification. A useful report lets the support team reproduce or classify it instead of asking you to repeat basic tests.

Include these items
- The exact error text, copied from the dialog.
- Platform, operating system version, processor, memory and graphics hardware information available from your system.
- Whether you use Steam or another launcher.
- The point of failure: startup, black screen, clicking Play, match simulation or a particular date.
- Every troubleshooting step already completed and the result of each one.
- Crash dumps generated by the game.
- Relevant save files, especially a save from immediately before a date-specific crash.
- On Windows, the settings files requested by Sports Interactive; on Mac, System Information when requested by SEGA.
- The status of custom graphics, skins, facepacks, editor files and other add-ons during the test.
Check the official known-issues tracker before submitting. If your symptom is already listed, follow its requested workaround and attach the information the tracker asks for. Avoid sending unrelated personal files; provide only the saves, dumps and settings relevant to the failure.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting slower
- Changing many variables at once: If you update drivers, reinstall the game and restore every add-on together, you cannot identify the cause. Make one controlled change and retest.
- Deleting the only save copy: Always move data to a backup before resetting folders.
- Restoring all add-ons immediately: Return them in stages so the trigger remains identifiable.
- Downloading replacement DLLs from random sites: Use the documented SEGA route for missing components.
- Leaving antivirus disabled: Perform only a short, vendor-guided test and restore protection afterward.
- Assuming a clean install removes user data: Installation verification does not replace saves, preferences or custom graphics in Documents.
- Reporting only that the game crashes: Exact wording, timing, hardware and files already tested are essential triage information.
FM27 requirements and known issues
The official material reviewed for this guide is franchise-level Football Manager guidance. It does not establish FM27-specific minimum specifications, a confirmed FM27 bug list, crash-frequency statistics or guaranteed fix rates. Requirements can increase between Football Manager versions, so confirm the FM27 store-page requirements for your edition and platform when they are published or updated.
Likewise, do not assume that a fix documented for another Football Manager version applies unchanged to FM27. Use the current FM27 support page for version-specific folder names, known issues and any revised launcher instructions, while retaining the diagnostic logic here: isolate add-ons, reset temporary data, verify files, test system conflicts and provide reproducible evidence.
Decide whether the problem is user data, installation or system software
The results of the tests form a practical diagnosis. If removing add-ons restores launch, repair or replace the offending content. If cache and preference removal works, rebuild settings gradually. If file verification replaces files and resolves the crash, the installation was damaged. If only the clean Sports Interactive folder works, restore user files in stages to find the corrupt save or configuration. If none of those tests changes the result, concentrate on graphics drivers, conflicting software, antivirus and platform-specific support instructions.
A persistent failure with no add-ons, fresh preferences, verified files and a clean user folder is strong evidence for a system, launcher or game defect rather than a skin or save problem. At that point, stop repeating resets and send the complete evidence package so support can investigate the remaining branch.
