Fix Football Manager 27 problems in this order: first compare your Windows or Mac with the published requirements, then lower the 2D match-rendering settings and test the same match. If the problem is a crash, temporarily move custom graphics, skins, editor files and other additions out of the game, clear caches and preferences, verify the installation, update the graphics driver, and isolate conflicting software. A crash that always occurs on one in-game date needs a crash dump and a save from immediately before the failure for SEGA Support.
This is a diagnosis guide rather than a promise that one option cures every computer. Football Manager 27 is scheduled for November 10, 2026, and the Steam listing checked on October 19, 2026, says it is not yet available. Menu names and file locations can therefore change in the launch build or a later patch.
Start by identifying the symptom
“Lag” is not one failure. A low or uneven frame rate while the match is being drawn usually points to rendering load, hardware capability, a graphics driver or a background conflict. A crash on launch or while loading a save is more often related to custom content, a damaged cache or preference, an incomplete installation, a driver or software conflict. A crash on the same in-game date after the normal fixes is a reproducible save or simulation failure that should be escalated with diagnostic files.

Check whether your computer is inside the published range
Do this before treating every stutter as a Football Manager bug. The Steam specification checked on October 19, 2026, is a capability baseline, not a smooth-play guarantee. SEGA notes that even a high-end graphics card can struggle at a high resolution, so resolution and match-rendering choices still matter after a requirements check.

If your machine is below minimum, software changes cannot create the missing CPU, memory, graphics feature or storage capacity. Between minimum and recommended, expect to rely more heavily on reduced rendering settings. At or above recommended, continue with the same tests: the published figures do not include an FM27-specific frame-rate target or benchmark.
Use a controlled baseline before changing settings
- Write down your operating system, processor, RAM, graphics adapter and driver version. On Windows, open Settings, System and About for the processor and memory, then Settings, System, Display, Advanced display and Display adapter properties for graphics details. On macOS, open Apple menu, About This Mac and System Report.
- Note whether the slowdown occurs only in the classic 2D view, at every match speed, or also in menus. Record whether it began after adding a skin, graphics pack, editor file or other custom content.
- Choose one repeatable test: the same match, replay or highlight sequence, with the same camera and playback speed. Change one setting group at a time so you can identify which change matters.
- Back up saves and custom files before moving or removing anything. Use a separate backup location; do not make the only copy of a save the file you are testing.
Sports Interactive says the classic 2D Match Engine view has been enhanced for FM27 with pre-set-piece gestures on free-kicks, club-specific drum audio where appropriate, cloth physics for officials’ flags, separate playback-speed preferences for past matches and immediate access to past-match highlights after a match ends. These are announced features, not performance measurements.
Reduce the 2D match-rendering load
SEGA’s first performance recommendation is to lower graphics quality and test the Match controls. Open FM27’s in-game preferences, go to the graphics or match settings area, and start with Graphics Quality. Then test the individual controls below.

A reliable Render Scale test
- Record the original Render Scale and every other Match value.
- Lower Render Scale by one available step, apply the change and run the identical match or replay.
- Observe whether camera movement, highlights and the match clock remain smooth. Do not compare a busy derby with a quiet fixture; use the same sequence.
- If the result improves, restore the original value and lower another option, or keep the lower scale if image sharpness is acceptable. If it does not, restore it and continue with driver and conflict checks.
The official guidance recommends these controls but does not state a universal best setting, a guaranteed frames-per-second gain or an average improvement from Render Scale. Your result depends on resolution, graphics hardware, drivers and the scene being drawn.
When the problem is a crash: return to a clean game state
For crashes, stop changing visual options and remove variables in a reversible order. Custom graphics, skins, editor files and other additions are important isolation variables because a file that worked in an earlier version can fail after a game update or interact with another addition.
Move custom additions out, do not delete them
- Quit Football Manager and the game launcher.
- Open the Sports Interactive user-data location for Football Manager. Identify folders containing custom graphics, skins, editor data, views or other downloaded additions.
- Move those folders to a clearly named backup location outside the Sports Interactive folder. Keep the original folder structure in the backup so restoration is easy.
- Start the game and test the same launch, save load or match that previously failed.
- If the crash disappears, return additions in batches, testing after each batch. Split a failing batch in half until you identify the specific file or group. Leave the trigger out of the active folder until it is updated or replaced.
This test protects saves and lets you distinguish a content problem from an installation or system problem. Never use a clean test as a reason to overwrite the only copy of a save.

Remove caches and preferences, then verify files
SEGA’s crash sequence recommends removing caches and preferences and verifying the game files. Perform each stage separately and test after it; otherwise you will not know which change fixed the failure.
- Close the game and launcher completely.
- In the Sports Interactive user-data location, move cache and preference folders or files to the backup location. Folder names can vary with the launch build, so move only items clearly identified as cache or preference data rather than deleting unrelated saves.
- Restart the launcher and Football Manager. Allow the game to rebuild clean cache or preference data, then test.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification command for Football Manager. Let it finish before starting the game; replace any files it reports as damaged or missing.
- Test again with custom additions still removed. Restore preferences only after the clean state is stable.
Update the graphics driver and isolate software conflicts
A current driver is part of the standard crash and performance path. Install the latest driver offered for your exact graphics adapter from its manufacturer, restart the computer, and repeat the controlled match or crash test. Do not infer that a driver update fixed the issue until the same scenario succeeds.
Next, check programs that run alongside Football Manager or the launcher, including overlays, capture utilities, hardware-monitoring tools and security software. SEGA’s published guidance warns that conflicting programs and antivirus interference can affect Football Manager or Steam, but it does not identify one universal blacklist. Treat each suspected program as a temporary isolation test, not as a permanent instruction to disable security.

- Close nonessential background programs and disable their in-game overlays for one test.
- If antivirus or endpoint protection reports a blocked game or launcher file, review its event log and use the product’s documented, reversible exception process only when you trust the installation.
- Retest with the same save or match. Re-enable programs one at a time after a successful test to identify the conflict.
Use a new Sports Interactive folder to separate user data from the installation
If a vanilla installation still crashes, create a new Sports Interactive folder and temporarily move the existing game folders aside. This resets user data without destroying it and tests whether a damaged preference, cache or custom-content state is involved.
- Exit Football Manager and the launcher.
- Rename the current Sports Interactive folder to something such as “Sports Interactive backup” in your user-data location. Keep it on the same drive only if there is enough free space; otherwise copy it to another backup location first.
- Start the game so it creates a new Sports Interactive folder with default data.
- Test a new game and then, if needed, a copy of the affected save. Do not move every old folder back at once.
- If the new folder works, restore saves first, then add other files in small batches. The item that reintroduces the crash is your leading suspect.
- If the new folder also fails with no additions, the issue is less likely to be user-data corruption; retain the clean test result for support and continue with driver, launcher and system checks.
What to do when a crash always occurs on one in-game date
A date-specific crash is different from a random launch failure. Finish the clean-state, cache, verification, driver and conflict sequence first. If the same date still crashes, preserve the evidence instead of repeatedly advancing the save.
- Make a backup copy of the save from just before the failing date. Keep the original untouched.
- Reproduce the crash once in the cleanest state you can document: no custom graphics, skins or editor files, with verified files and updated graphics drivers.
- Locate the crash dump generated by Football Manager or the launcher. Keep the original file and note its timestamp so support can match it to the reproduction.
- Contact SEGA Support with the crash dump, the pre-crash save, your operating system and hardware details, the exact in-game date, and the troubleshooting steps already completed.
A save from immediately before the failure lets support inspect the same simulation state. A generic statement that “the game crashes” does not provide that reproducible context.

What is and is not known about FM27 performance
As of October 19, 2026, no authoritative FM27-specific source in the published material provides a crash percentage, stutter percentage, frame-rate target, benchmark result or average improvement from lowering Render Scale. Community anecdotes and results from another Football Manager edition are not measurements for FM27. Use your own controlled before-and-after test and report the exact hardware and settings when asking for help.
The game is scheduled to launch on November 10, 2026. Sports Interactive has said a Launch Preview version should appear one to two weeks before the street date, while the Steam listing checked on October 19 says the game is not yet available. Instructions that depend on the final launch build or later patches may therefore require updated menu names or folder locations.
