Start with Steam’s file verification before changing anything else. In Steam Library, right-click FINAL FANTASY XIII, open Properties, choose Local Files, and select Verify integrity of game cache (the wording may appear as file verification in newer clients). Square Enix lists this as the first response when the Windows version crashes, will not start, or opens to a black screen.
If verification does not solve the problem, test the launcher’s fullscreen and windowed modes, then install FF13Fix for frame pacing and controller-scan stutter. Connect an XInput controller before launching, and only then consider the 4GB/Large Address Aware patch, DXVK, ReShade, or other mods. The sequence below keeps each change reversible and makes it clear which change caused a new problem.

FINAL FANTASY XIII is a single-player RPG released on Steam for Windows on 9 October 2014. The Steam listing describes fullscreen support and a 60 FPS-capable PC version. Before you change files
- Close the game and Steam before copying or replacing DLLs and executables.
- Write down your current display mode, resolution, refresh rate, controller connection, and installed mods. This gives you a known state to restore.
- Keep a backup of any file you patch. For the executable patch, the required backup name is
untouched.exein the game’s bin folder. - Do not combine FF13Fix, DXVK, ReShade, texture packs, and other DLL-based changes during the first test. A single-variable approach is the fastest way to identify a conflict.
How to stop Final Fantasy XIII from crashing: the ordered workflow
1. Verify the Steam installation
Square Enix’s support guidance specifically tells players whose PC version is crashing, refusing to start, or showing a black screen to validate the installation. Use this path:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click FINAL FANTASY XIII and choose Properties.
- Open Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game cache (newer Steam builds may use slightly different “verify integrity” wording).
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game without third-party DLLs, overlays, or mods.
Verification compares the local installation with Steam’s manifest and replaces files that are missing or damaged. It does not install FF13Fix, change your controller, or patch the executable, which is why it belongs at the beginning of the process. If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the clean game before adding anything else.
2. Test a simple display configuration
Use the official FINAL FANTASY XIII launcher’s screen settings to test both fullscreen and windowed modes. Change one mode, launch, and observe whether the game reaches the title screen; then test the other mode if necessary. A black screen that disappears in windowed mode points to a display-mode or synchronization conflict rather than a missing game file.

Keep the first test conservative: use a resolution your monitor supports and avoid forcing extra scaling, overlays, or external frame limiters. The Steam listing describes a 60 FPS-capable version, but that specification is not a guarantee that every monitor, driver, or mod combination will hold a stable 60 FPS. Once the game launches reliably, you can raise resolution or add enhancements one at a time.
3. Install FF13Fix for stutter and frame-pacing problems
FF13Fix is a community fix aimed at the PC-specific timing and display behavior that file verification cannot correct. Download a release of the project, then place both documented files in the game’s executable directory:

- Close Steam and the game.
- Copy

- If the result is worse, remove those two third-party files and retest the verified installation.
The project README documents several changes: FF13Fix removes the game’s frame pacer, addresses stutter caused by controllers being scanned every second, adds optional vibration and frame-rate controls, enables triple buffering, and uses the desktop monitor refresh rate in fullscreen. These options are reasons to change one setting at a time in FF13Fix.ini instead of enabling every feature immediately.

FF13Fix is a DLL-based modification, so a clean backup matters. Steam verification can restore original game files, but it will not necessarily remove every extra file you copied into the bin folder; delete the FF13Fix DLL and INI yourself when isolating a problem.

Steam recommends an XInput controller for this title. Connect that controller before opening the game. FF13Fix’s controller-scan remedy removes hotplug support, meaning the controller should remain connected from launch rather than being plugged in after the game is running.
- Exit the game.
- Connect the XInput controller directly or through the same adapter you intend to use during play.
- Confirm Windows and Steam detect it.
- Launch FINAL FANTASY XIII and test the previously stuttering area.
- If you need to disconnect or change controllers during play, remove FF13Fix temporarily and retest, because its scan fix does not support hotplugging.
This test separates controller polling from graphics performance. If stutter disappears with the controller disconnected but returns when it is connected, use the FF13Fix controller option and keep the controller connected before launch.

5. Use the 4GB/Large Address Aware patch for memory-related crashes
The 4GB/Large Address Aware patch is most relevant when the game crashes with triple buffering, 4K-or-higher resolutions, DXVK, ReShade, or high-definition texture and model modifications. It is not the first response to every crash; apply it only after verification and a clean display test, and keep an untouched executable.
- Open
FINAL FANTASY XIIIwhite_dataprogwinbin. - Copy the original
ffxiiiimg.exebefore patching. - Rename that backup exactly to
untouched.exeand leave it in the same bin folder. - Run the 4GB/Large Address Aware patch against the original executable as directed by the patch utility.
- Launch the game with the same resolution and mods that previously triggered the memory-related crash.
Preserving untouched.exe is part of FF13Fix’s documented procedure for this game. If a patched executable behaves incorrectly, restore the backup, remove other variables, verify the installation, and test again before repatching.

Graphics wrappers and injectors can solve one hardware-specific issue while creating another. When diagnosing a crash, temporarily remove extra DLLs, ReShade, overlays, and texture or model mods, then verify the Steam installation and launch the unmodified game. Add components back individually only after the base game is stable.

For Windows users with AMD Navi cards, the FF13Fix README documents a specific DXVK arrangement: use DXVK’s 32-bit (x86) d3d9.dll, rename that file to dxvk.dll, and keep FF13Fix named d3d9.dll. The two files must remain in the FF13 bin directory with those names. Do not substitute a 64-bit DXVK build or rename FF13Fix; the documented workaround depends on this separation.
- Remove all wrappers and mods and confirm a clean launch.
- Install FF13Fix alone and test.
- If the AMD Navi crash remains, add the x86 DXVK file renamed to
dxvk.dll. - Test again before adding ReShade or visual mods.
- If a crash appears after one addition, remove that addition and keep the last known-good configuration.
Symptom-specific branches
“How do I fix the black screen when FF13 launches?”
- Verify the installation through Steam’s Library, Properties, Local Files, and integrity check.
- Use the launcher to switch from fullscreen to windowed mode, or from windowed to fullscreen, and test again.
- Remove FF13Fix, DXVK, ReShade, overlays, and other mods while testing the clean game.
- If the clean game works, reintroduce FF13Fix first, then any wrapper or visual mod separately.
- If the verified, unmodified game still shows a black screen, contact Square Enix support after documenting the verification result and display modes tested.
Do not apply the 4GB patch merely because the screen is black; that patch targets memory pressure in demanding configurations, not every launch failure.

- Verify files and remove overlays so you are measuring the game itself.
- Install FF13Fix in the documented bin directory.

FF13Fix addresses frame pacing and the once-per-second controller scan documented by its project. There is no authoritative published percentage for how much stutter it removes, so judge success by consistent frame delivery in your own setup rather than by a promised benchmark.

d3d9.dllandFF13Fix.inifrom the FF13 bin folder. - DXVK: remove the renamed
dxvk.dlland any other DXVK files you added. - ReShade and overlays: use each tool’s uninstall option or remove only the files it installed; do not delete unrelated game files.
- Executable patch: restore the original using the preserved
untouched.exe, then verify the Steam installation. - Uncertain state: remove third-party files, run Steam verification, and test before reinstalling modifications.
When to contact Square Enix support
Escalate when the verified, unmodified installation still crashes, fails to start, or shows a black screen after both launcher display modes have been tested. Tell support that you completed Steam’s integrity check, which mode worked or failed, whether an XInput controller was connected before launch, and whether third-party DLLs and mods were removed. That information distinguishes a damaged installation from a display, input, or modification conflict.
Keep expectations realistic: the Steam listing’s 60 FPS claim describes the PC version’s supported target, not a guarantee for every modern driver, monitor refresh rate, wrapper, or mod combination. A clean baseline, one change at a time, and a preserved executable provide the most reliable path to a stable installation.
