If FINAL FANTASY XIV (FFXIV) stopped launching, downloading a patch, or accepting your credentials immediately after an update, start by checking for a Square Enix service incident. A global launcher problem cannot be repaired by changing files on one computer. If no incident is reported, work from the least destructive checks—Windows or console updates, launcher display settings, storage and network security, then installation integrity—before considering a reinstall.
Use the symptom table below to choose the correct branch. The platform matters: a Windows launcher display defect, a Steam login incident, a console system-update problem, and an account-password rejection have different remedies.
Choose the right troubleshooting branch first

Also note the scope. If several players report the same failure after the same patch, prioritize the official Lodestone notice. If only one computer or account is affected, local troubleshooting is more likely to help.
Check for a Square Enix incident before changing anything
Update failures are sometimes caused by Square Enix infrastructure rather than your installation. Check FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone notices and the Square Enix Support Center for a current launcher, login, or maintenance announcement. Record the notice time and compare it with when your error began.

Known Windows launcher display defect after Patch 7.21
After Patch 7.21, Square Enix reported that text and images in the Windows version launcher could appear enlarged, shrunk, or fail to display correctly. The company announced that a launcher update fixed this issue on April 28, 2025. If your symptoms match that description, allow the launcher to update and restart it before attempting more invasive repairs. A Windows text-size setting can still produce a similar appearance, so check that setting if the update does not correct the display.
Known Windows/Steam login incident on September 12, 2025
Square Enix documented a Windows/Steam launcher system error that prevented login on September 12, 2025, from 10:30 to 15:58 GMT. The incident was attributed to the negative impact of server security-enhancement settings, and Square Enix later announced recovery. During a comparable notice, local password changes, reinstallations, and firewall edits will not restore service; wait for the provider’s recovery statement and retry afterward.
How to tell an outage from a local failure
- Look for a notice that names your platform, region, or data center. A Windows/Steam incident does not automatically explain a console-only error.
- Ask whether another player on the same platform can reach the login screen. Widespread failures point toward service status; one-machine failures point toward local settings.
- Check the notice time. A launcher that worked until the stated incident window is more likely to be affected by the incident than by a suddenly corrupted password.
- Save a screenshot and the exact error text before making changes. This evidence is useful if the notice ends but your account remains affected.
Install current operating-system and platform updates
Square Enix states that if the most recent Windows update is not installed, the launcher may not start correctly. On Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, and restart even if Windows does not immediately request a reboot. Launch FFXIV again only after the restart completes.
On PlayStation or Xbox, open the console’s system-update page and install the latest system software before retrying the game update. Platform support guidance treats the console update as a prerequisite for diagnosing a failed game update. If the console reports that it is current, continue to storage and network checks rather than repeatedly downloading the same game patch.
Repair a blank, black, or incorrectly sized Windows launcher
A launcher window that opens without controls is a display or embedded-web-content problem, not necessarily an account problem. Complete these checks in order and restart the launcher after each group of changes.
1. Close every FFXIV process
- Exit the launcher and the game.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- End any remaining FFXIV or launcher process, then close Task Manager.
Do not delete installation files at this stage. The purpose is to ensure that the next launch reads the corrected Windows settings.
2. Enable Active scripting in Internet Options
- Press the Windows key and search for Internet Options.
- Open Internet Options and select the Security tab.
- Choose the relevant Internet zone and select Custom level.
- Under Scripting, set Active scripting to Enable.
- Apply the change and close the dialogs.
Square Enix support identifies scripting as a requirement when the launcher does not display correctly. This setting affects the Windows component used by the launcher; it is not a request to lower security for unrelated websites.

3. Restore the Privacy tab to its default setting
- Open Internet Options again.
- Select the Privacy tab.
- Choose Default (or restore the tab’s default level), then select Apply.
- Close Internet Options and relaunch FFXIV.
If your organization manages these settings, Windows may prevent the change. In that case, record the restriction and ask the device administrator rather than forcing a policy override.
4. Check Windows text size and accessibility scaling
Open Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Return the text-size control to a normal value, select Apply, and restart the launcher. The Patch 7.21 defect specifically involved Windows text-size settings, so an enlarged or shrunken interface should be checked even when scripting and privacy are already correct.
Also inspect Settings > System > Display > Scale if the entire launcher is disproportionately large. Change only one display setting at a time and note the original value so you can restore it.
5. Test graphics rendering and permissions
Square Enix also advises checking GPU-rendering settings and Windows administrative permissions when startup or display problems persist. Temporarily test the launcher with the supported rendering option shown in its configuration, and confirm that your Windows account has permission to run the installed client. If an administrator approval prompt appears, use an authorized account; do not grant broad permissions to unknown programs.

Fix patch files that will not download or install
Patch failures usually involve one of four conditions: insufficient storage, a network path blocked by a router or ISP, security software intercepting the connection, or corrupted local data. Check them in that order because the first three are reversible and faster than reinstalling.
Confirm free storage before retrying
Check the drive that contains FFXIV and verify that it has enough free space for the update and temporary files. Square Enix’s current Windows installation FAQ specifies at least 80 GB of free space for installation. That figure is an installation requirement stated by Square Enix Support Center; an individual patch may need less, but a nearly full drive can still make extraction fail. Empty the recycle bin or move unrelated files if necessary, then retry the patch.

Restart the network path
- Close FFXIV and pause other large downloads or streaming sessions.
- Power off the router and modem or gateway according to the manufacturer’s normal procedure.
- Wait for the equipment to finish shutting down, restart it, and wait until the internet connection is restored.
- Launch FFXIV and retry the update.
If the update succeeds on a different connection but not your usual one, the router, ISP, or its security filtering is the likely branch. An Ethernet cable can be used as a diagnostic comparison for a Wi-Fi-specific problem, but buying hardware is not a general FFXIV fix.

Check router and ISP security settings
Security controls that filter game traffic can stop the patch server from responding. Review router, gateway, and ISP security features for blocked-game, parental-control, intrusion-prevention, or port-filtering rules. Make a temporary, documented exception for the FFXIV traffic only if you understand the setting, then restore your normal protection after testing.
Where your network requires explicit port rules, the official guidance lists these ranges and protocols:

Do not open unrelated ports or expose a device directly to the internet. If you cannot change the router safely, provide the port list to the network administrator or ISP and ask whether those connections are being filtered.
Test Windows security software and firewall interference
Square Enix notes that security software and firewalls can interfere especially after installation or a version update. Add the official FFXIV launcher and game components to the security product’s allowed list using its documented procedure. For diagnosis only, you may briefly disable the conflicting program while disconnected from unrelated browsing, retry the patch, and immediately restore normal protection. A successful test identifies interference; it does not justify leaving antivirus or firewall protection disabled.

Check installation integrity before reinstalling
A failed patch can leave damaged or incomplete local data. Reinstalling may be necessary, but it is slow and requires downloading the client again, so treat it as a later step.

When a reinstall becomes reasonable
- The launcher opens normally, storage and network checks pass, and the same patch error persists.
- The client reports missing or corrupted data that cannot be repaired through the available launcher process.
- The problem follows the installation to another network while other FFXIV services work normally.
Before uninstalling, record your platform, region, data center, exact error code, and any screenshots. Confirm that the destination drive meets the 80 GB free-space requirement stated in Square Enix’s current Windows installation FAQ. If you use custom settings or configuration files, back up only files you understand and keep the backup separate from the installation directory.
Why reinstalling is not the first response
A reinstall cannot fix a Square Enix outage, an incorrect Windows text-size setting, a blocked router connection, or a rejected account credential. It can also consume substantial bandwidth and time. Complete the reversible checks first and reinstall only when the evidence points to damaged local data or when Square Enix Support directs you to do so.
Resolve “ID or password is incorrect” and other account errors
When the launcher displays login fields but rejects credentials, use the account path intended for FFXIV. On the account page, select the Square Enix Account button for FFXIV, then enter the account ID and password associated with that service.
Verify the account path and password
- Confirm that you selected Square Enix Account, not a different sign-in option.
- Re-enter the ID and password carefully, checking keyboard layout, Caps Lock, and accidental spaces.
- If the password is uncertain, use the official password-reset flow rather than repeatedly guessing.
- After resetting, enter the new password once in a fresh login attempt.
A correct password cannot repair a launcher that never shows its login controls. If fields are absent, return to the incident and blank-launcher branches instead of changing account credentials.
Use a different browser session for account recovery
For account-page problems, try another supported browser or a private/incognito session. This separates an expired cookie, cached page, or browser extension from an account failure. If the private session works, clear the affected browser’s site data for the account page and disable extensions that alter scripts or page security, then sign in again.
If password reset messages do not arrive, check the address associated with the account and its spam or junk folder. Do not create a second account as a troubleshooting step; that can make service-account ownership and subscription history harder to identify.

What to do when login fields are missing
Missing fields are a launcher-display symptom. First check whether Square Enix has announced a Windows/Steam launcher incident. If no incident is active, apply the Windows sequence: install current Windows updates, enable Active scripting, restore Internet Options privacy defaults, check text size and display scaling, and test rendering and permissions.

Once the fields return, perform one normal sign-in. If the account is then rejected, use the account-recovery steps rather than repeating display changes. This separation prevents two different problems—rendering and credentials—from being diagnosed as one.
Platform-specific considerations
Windows
Use the Internet Options, Windows Update, Accessibility, display-scaling, storage, and firewall checks described above. The documented Patch 7.21 display defect and the September 12, 2025 launcher incident both concerned Windows users, so verify Lodestone notices before editing local settings.
Steam
Steam users can be affected by the same Windows launcher system errors documented by Square Enix. Check the incident scope before reinstalling either the game or Steam components. If the launcher opens but the account page fails, test the Square Enix Account path in a private browser session.
PlayStation and Xbox
Install the latest console system software before retrying a game update. Then check free storage, restart the network equipment, and review router or ISP filtering. Console menus and security controls differ by model, so use the console manufacturer’s documented update and network procedures rather than applying Windows-specific Internet Options steps.
Mac
Mac users should identify the exact launcher message and confirm that the operating system and FFXIV client are supported versions. The Windows-specific scripting, text-size, and Internet Options procedures do not apply. Continue with incident, storage, network, and account checks, then provide the platform details to Square Enix Support.
Escalate with evidence when local checks fail
Contact the Square Enix Support Center after the relevant branch has been completed or when an official incident directs you to support. Include enough detail for the agent to reproduce the problem:
- The exact error message and numeric error code, copied exactly or shown in a screenshot.
- Platform and distribution: Windows, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, or Mac.
- Your region and FFXIV data center.
- The patch or client version, if displayed.
- The date and time of the failure, including time zone.
- What changed immediately after the update.
- Whether the launcher is absent, blank, black, incorrectly scaled, unable to download, or rejecting credentials.
- Which steps worked, which did not, and whether another network or account behaved differently.
Do not send your password, one-time codes, or full payment details. Support can investigate with the error code and platform information without receiving secret credentials. Official support remains the final authority when the launcher, patch service, or account cannot be restored locally.

- Check Lodestone and Square Enix notices for a matching incident.
- Install the latest Windows or console system update and restart.
- If the Windows launcher is blank or black, repair Active scripting and Privacy defaults, then check text size, scaling, rendering, and permissions.
- If a patch will not download, verify storage, restart network equipment, inspect router/ISP filtering, and check the listed UDP and TCP ports.
- Test firewall or security-software interference briefly and restore protection immediately.
- Use the Square Enix Account login path, a private browser session, and password reset only when login fields are present and credentials are rejected.
- Consider reinstalling only after local data appears damaged and the 80 GB Windows installation-space requirement can be met.
- Escalate with the exact code, platform, region, data center, timing, and completed steps.
This order keeps global incidents separate from local repairs and preserves the least-destructive options until the evidence supports a reinstall.
