To fix a FileBrowser Quantum file error, first identify the exact action and client, then check the affected user’s permission for that action on the relevant source. In v2.0.0 and later, file-operation permissions are granted per source—not by a global user flag. Source scope, path rules, the host filesystem, and WebDAV configuration are separate layers, so granting broader access is rarely a sound first step.
Identify what failed before changing permissions
Record the operation, source name, full path, client, account or token, FileBrowser Quantum version, exact error, and failure time. Listing a folder, reading a file, uploading or overwriting, creating a folder, and deleting are distinct operations and can require different permissions.
When possible, retry the same operation in the web interface. If it works there but fails from a WebDAV client or an API integration, focus on that client’s path, URL, authentication, or request configuration rather than broadening the user’s access.
Check the permission for the specific operation
Starting with v2.0.0, file permissions are per source, not global. A user’s global API access does not, by itself, authorize downloading or uploading files. In the User Management page, edit the affected user, expand the source involved, and check the permission corresponding to the failed operation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Operation | Permission to check | WebDAV method examples |
|---|---|---|
| Browse or list files | View | PROPFIND, OPTIONS |
| Read or download file contents | Download | GET, HEAD |
| Upload or overwrite a file | Modify | PUT |
| Create a file or folder | Create | MKCOL for folder creation |
| Delete a file or folder | Delete | DELETE |
If folders appear but opening or downloading a file fails, check Download as well as View. If browsing works but an upload fails, check Modify; if the failed step is creating a folder, check Create. A multi-step client workflow may need more than one permission.
Confirm the source scope and path rules
Verify that the source is assigned to the user and that the requested path is within the source’s configured scope. Then inspect the source’s denyByDefault setting and any matching path-specific allow or deny rules. A source grant determines which operation the user may perform; scope and path rules determine where access applies. These layers do not substitute for one another: as the project documentation puts it, “Access rules are not file permissions.”

For example, enabling Modify does not necessarily authorize an upload to every path. A request can still be blocked because the path is outside the user’s scope or matches a deny rule. Conversely, an allow rule for a path does not grant the user the operation permission needed to write there.
Update API-created users and check token ownership
For users created through the API on v2.0.0 or later, put file-operation permissions inside each source object’s scopes[].permissions. The project documents migration of legacy top-level values during an upgrade, but new integrations should use the scoped structure.

For token-backed WebDAV, authorization is based on the token owner’s per-source permissions and is intersected with any file-operation caps on the token. Check that the token is valid, belongs to the intended user, and is not more restricted than the user’s required source permission.
Distinguish application denials from host filesystem errors
A user-facing denial for a file action is not the same as an operating-system permission error affecting FileBrowser Quantum itself. If server logs show a filesystem permission failure during database migration, check the ownership and permissions of the database file. If the server cannot create its temporary or cache directory, configure server.cacheDir and ensure the FileBrowser process can access that location.

These host-level checks apply when the error or log points to the database or cache directory; they are not a general explanation for every failed user upload or download.

After checking the source grant, scope, and path rules, verify the WebDAV request’s source and path. The URL uses the form /dav/<source-name>/…; confirm the source name and requested path, the HTTP or HTTPS scheme, port, and token. Test the corresponding path in the web interface. If the web path and WebDAV settings appear correct, inspect server logs at the failure time for authentication failures, an incorrect path, or proxy misconfiguration. The project’s WebDAV troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the web path and server logs when URL, scheme, and token checks do not resolve the issue.

Review the upload and directory-creation security advisory
The project’s GitHub security advisory describes an authorization-checking issue in which uploads and directory creation could check a scope-relative path instead of the full path used by access rules. Its version fields conflict: the headline metadata lists affected versions through v1.5.1-stable and patched versions as v1.5.2-stable or later and v2.0.0-beta or later, while embedded advisory details instead list affected versions through v1.4.0-stable and no patched version. Those conflicting entries do not establish a reliable fixed-version threshold on their own.
If your access model relies on path-specific denials for uploads or folder creation, consult the live security advisory and the project’s release notes for the exact deployed build. Do not infer that a particular version is safe from the conflicting advisory fields alone.
Use the version boundary to interpret older settings
Before v2.0.0, troubleshooting material or existing integrations may reflect global permission assumptions. From v2.0.0 onward, check the grants on the specific source used by the failed operation. The project’s User Management documentation explains the per-source model and permission descriptions; its Access Control Overview describes how path rules fit alongside file permissions.
