First find out whether the buffering is in the feed reaching YouTube or in viewers’ playback. If YouTube Live Control Room reports an incoming-stream problem, check FFmpeg, the source, encoding load, keyframes and your measured upload speed. If the incoming stream and encoder look healthy but viewers still buffer, investigate stream latency and playback conditions instead. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering because viewers have less time to build a buffer.
1. Identify where the buffering happens
Compare what FFmpeg reports with the stream preview and health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. A warning there indicates a problem with the incoming feed; viewer reports alone do not establish that FFmpeg or your Airtel connection is failing. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and the outbound internet connection when the encoder output looks and sounds healthy. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explains the checks.
- Incoming-stream warning or unhealthy preview: inspect FFmpeg’s output, stream settings, source and machine load.
- Healthy incoming stream, but viewers report buffering: check the stream’s latency mode and viewers’ playback conditions. Lower latency can leave less buffer at the player.
Do not assume Airtel is at fault based only on the provider name. The relevant evidence is whether your outbound connection is unstable at the place and time you stream.
2. Check the source, FFmpeg and machine load
Before changing broadband settings, rule out a failing or irregular input, audio/video source problems, FFmpeg errors and an overloaded CPU. YouTube recommends checking the encoder and CPU, and inspecting a local archive when stream quality is poor. If you can, make a short test with the same source and representative motion and audio before going live.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Review FFmpeg’s log around the time the warning or buffering began. Note encoder, input, connection and output errors.
- Check CPU load and whether encoding is keeping up with the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm the source is playing steadily and that the audio and video remain synchronized.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s exact stream-health message; a keyframe warning calls for an encoder-setting check.
3. Match bitrate to measured upload capacity
Measure upload speed on the same network used by FFmpeg. A download-speed result does not show whether the connection can sustain an outbound live stream. If the issue is intermittent, repeat the test during the period when buffering usually occurs; this is a practical diagnostic, not an Airtel-specific published measurement.
YouTube says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for audio bitrate and other traffic on the connection, including household use. Compare against sustained upload capacity rather than treating a single peak result as guaranteed capacity. YouTube’s current guidance is in its encoder settings for live streaming.

| H.264 resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended video ingest bitrates, not measurements of Airtel performance or a guarantee that a particular line can sustain them. Include audio and other traffic when applying the headroom rule. If upload speed is inadequate or fluctuates, lower the video bitrate, resolution or frame rate, then retest.
4. Verify FFmpeg’s output settings and option order
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Set the output for the bandwidth you can sustain; a recommended YouTube bitrate is not a requirement to push a stream beyond your line’s capacity.

- Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.
- Rate control: use CBR for the live output.
- Keyframes: target a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube explicitly warns that keyframes not being sent often enough can cause buffering.
- Resolution and frame rate: lower them for a controlled test if you cannot maintain the chosen bitrate with headroom.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest.
- Option placement: FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output file and reset between files. Confirm that each codec, rate-control, keyframe and output-format option precedes the output URL it is meant to configure.
FFmpeg’s official protocol documentation describes RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP and RTMPS as RTMP over SSL. It documents RTMP options such as buffer duration and TCP keepalive, but does not establish that changing them cures inadequate upload capacity, packet loss or provider congestion. Its RTMP publishing example uses -re, -f flv and an RTMP URL; adapt any example to your input, installed FFmpeg build and YouTube endpoint rather than copying it blindly. Never paste your stream key into shared logs or public posts.
5. Run a controlled retest
- Choose a lower resolution or bitrate that leaves room below your measured sustained upload capacity, including audio and other network use.
- Verify CBR and the two-second keyframe interval in the actual FFmpeg output configuration.
- Use the same source and representative motion and audio so the retest reflects the real stream.
- Test before the live event, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room while streaming.
- If the encoder remains healthy but outbound tests show a connection problem, save the results and escalate with timestamps to your ISP.
6. Consider RTMPS or HLS based on the workflow
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure RTMP ingest choice. HLS is an alternative where the encoder supports it or the workflow needs capabilities such as certain HDR or codec combinations. YouTube says HLS uses HTTPS, TS segments and a rolling playlist; because it sends video in segments, it has higher latency than RTMP. Switching protocols is a compatibility or workflow choice, not a general fix for a weak or congested connection. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
7. What to give Airtel if the connection appears responsible
If FFmpeg and the incoming stream look healthy but outbound tests show a problem, contact Airtel with evidence tied to the affected connection. YouTube’s guidance is to contact the ISP when the connection test finds issues. This information helps distinguish a local or time-specific fault from a configuration problem:
- Exact times buffering occurred and whether it was a viewer complaint or an incoming-stream warning.
- Relevant FFmpeg error lines and Live Control Room stream-health messages.
- CPU load, source details, resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, keyframe interval and whether you used RTMPS.
- Upload-speed results from the same network, especially tests taken during the affected period.
Do not share your YouTube stream key: it grants access to the live ingest endpoint. If it is exposed, treat it as compromised and reset it through YouTube.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this prove Airtel broadband is the cause?
No. A connection issue should be supported by outbound upload tests from the affected network and time, alongside healthy encoder evidence.
Will switching from RTMP to HLS necessarily stop buffering?
No. HLS has different requirements and higher latency; it is a workflow or compatibility choice, not a general cure for insufficient upload capacity.
