Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf FFmpeg stops publishing to YouTube Live after a network interruption, adding -reconnect is usually not the right fix for the output connection: FFmpeg documents those options for HTTP, not as a universal RTMP/RTMPS publishing switch. For temporary RTMP output failures, FFmpeg documents recovery through the FIFO muxer. First check whether FFmpeg is still running and whether YouTube is receiving the stream; then configure output recovery and test it with your actual endpoint and FFmpeg build.
Why a video loop does not reconnect the live output
Looping controls what FFmpeg reads; reconnecting controls whether FFmpeg can publish to YouTube after its output connection fails. They are separate parts of the pipeline. A repeated input file can keep providing frames, but it cannot by itself restore a broken RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection.
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, -reconnect_on_network_error, and -reconnect_on_http_error in its HTTP protocol documentation. They address HTTP connections or streams; do not assume they make an RTMP(S) output reconnect. If your input is itself an HTTP stream, HTTP reconnect options may be relevant to that input, but that does not recover the separate YouTube output leg.
Configure FFmpeg’s documented RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation gives an example that continues processing at real-time speed during a temporary failure and attempts to recover streaming every second. Adapt the example to your source, codecs, stream mapping, and current YouTube ingest address:

- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
"YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
- Replace the input and mappings.
INPUTis the local file in this example.-stream_loop -1repeats that file indefinitely, and-rereads it at its recorded rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. If your source has no audio, change the mapping so FFmpeg does not require a nonexistent audio stream. The mappings and codecs shown are examples, not requirements for every source. - Keep recovery options on the output path.
-f fifo -fifo_format flvselects the FIFO muxer with FLV output.-attempt_recovery 1enables recovery attempts, and-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait interval to one second in this documented pattern. Confirm these options are available in the FFmpeg build you actually run. - Use the current YouTube ingest URL and key. Replace the placeholder destination with the endpoint and key for your stream. The FFmpeg documentation’s sample RTMP server address is illustrative, not a YouTube endpoint. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or support requests.
- Understand the buffering trade-off. The example includes
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. Dropping packets on overflow can affect what viewers receive during an extended failure; recovery attempts do not guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect or preserve the same live-event state. - Check the result before relying on it. Test during a controlled interruption. Compare FFmpeg’s logs and whether the process remains alive with the preview and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. Behavior depends on the FFmpeg build, command, interruption, and YouTube’s stream state; the documented example is not a guarantee for every setup.
Verify YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the current stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP; use the URL and protocol shown for your stream, and make sure your FFmpeg build supports that protocol. YouTube’s instructions are in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- SSL error: Check that the address uses the correct RTMPS protocol and server. YouTube advises specifying port 443 when troubleshooting an SSL error if the URL is otherwise correct.
- Connection timeout: Check the server URL and protocol, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
- Unclear URL or key: Copy them again from the current Live Control Room settings rather than reusing an old saved value.
Diagnose the failure before changing more settings
- Save the evidence. Record the full command with the key redacted, FFmpeg version and build information, and log lines immediately before and after the drop.
- Determine whether FFmpeg exited. If it is still running, inspect the output and muxer errors and check whether recovery attempts appear in the logs. If the process has exited, FIFO recovery cannot act on it.
- Separate input, encoding, and output problems. Check whether the source stopped, encoding failed, or only the publishing connection failed. An input loop addresses the source, not a failed output connection.
- Compare with YouTube’s status. Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream status alongside the FFmpeg logs. Change one relevant variable at a time and test again, rather than replacing the endpoint, codecs, and recovery settings all at once.
When FFmpeg has exited: add process supervision
FIFO recovery applies while FFmpeg is operating. If the process terminates and you want it relaunched, you need a separate process supervisor or service manager configured for your system. A restart can relaunch FFmpeg, but it cannot correct a wrong stream key, invalid endpoint, unsupported protocol, or continuing network failure. Choose and test supervision for your deployment; the FFmpeg and YouTube documentation cited here does not prescribe a particular supervisor.

Copyright and live-stream checks for looped video
Before broadcasting a prerecorded file repeatedly, make sure you have the rights to its video, music, and other included material. A working reconnect does not resolve copyright claims or guarantee that a stream will remain available. Check YouTube’s current policies and the status shown for your live stream; do not treat successful ingest as confirmation that the content is cleared.

If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos playing on a YouTube channel, rather than troubleshoot an FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
