First identify which connection is reconnecting: FFmpeg may be losing its input source, or it may be failing to publish to YouTube. The remedy depends on the affected protocol. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect options here apply to HTTP inputs; they are not a general fix for RTMP or RTMPS output failures.

Identify the connection that is failing

FFmpeg can read from one endpoint and publish to another. A reconnect message alone does not show which leg failed, so do not start by adding retry flags. Inspect the complete log around a disconnect and identify whether FFmpeg reports a read/input error or a write/output error. Note the protocol and URL involved, but redact credentials and the YouTube stream key.

Also compare the timing with messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s stream-health guidance recommends monitoring stream health and messages; these can help establish whether YouTube is reporting an ingest problem.

  • Input failure: FFmpeg is unable to read its source. The HTTP reconnect options below are relevant only if that source uses HTTP.
  • Output failure: FFmpeg is unable to publish to YouTube. Check the destination URL, key, ingest protocol, upload reliability, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Do not assume HTTP input options will repair this failure.

A title or a single reconnect line cannot establish the root cause. For a specific diagnosis, the useful evidence is the FFmpeg version/build, exact command with secrets removed, several log lines before and after the disconnect, the protocols on both legs, network/upload conditions, and the corresponding YouTube stream-health message.

If FFmpeg is reconnecting to an HTTP input

FFmpeg documents these as HTTP protocol options. Choose a trigger that matches the observed failure and decide whether reaching the end of the source should stop playback or cause another request. They are not interchangeable, and retries cannot make an unavailable source, invalid URL, authentication failure, or unstable network work.

Option What it does Use it when
reconnect Automatically reconnects when disconnected before EOF. The HTTP connection drops before the input reaches its end.
reconnect_at_eof Treats EOF as an error and reconnects; intended for live or endless streams. The HTTP source is expected to continue rather than end normally.
reconnect_on_network_error Reconnects on TCP/TLS errors during connection establishment. The relevant failure is a connection-establishment network error.
reconnect_on_http_error Selects HTTP status codes, including categories such as 4xx or 5xx, that trigger retries. The log shows an HTTP response status that you intentionally want to retry. A retry will not correct a persistent authorization or URL error.
reconnect_streamed Allows reconnects for streamed or non-seekable inputs. The input is streamed or non-seekable and needs reconnect behavior.
reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_total_max Bound reconnect delay, retry count, or total reconnect delay. You need retry limits appropriate to the job rather than retries that continue indefinitely.

Check the options available in your installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Defaults can vary by version and build. FFmpeg 8.1’s HTTP source documentation shows a maximum reconnect delay default of 120 seconds and an unlimited retry default represented as -1; those are version-specific reference values, not guarantees for every installation. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg 8.1 HTTP source.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Apply HTTP reconnect options to an HTTP input, not indiscriminately to the command. Confirm which URL they govern, then verify that the chosen trigger and retry bounds match the log and the source’s intended behavior.

If FFmpeg is failing to publish to YouTube

Recheck the destination URL and stream key

Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the current stream URL and stream key used by the encoder. Make sure both are entered correctly. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in public logs, screenshots, or examples. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers configuring an encoder for a live stream.

Verify the ingest protocol and endpoint

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the actual endpoint shown in Live Control Room; do not substitute a host copied from an example. If the log shows a timeout or SSL error, verify the URL and protocol. For the documented invalid-certificate SSL error, YouTube also suggests checking the server URL/protocol and trying port 443 where appropriate. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Check upload reliability and stream health

Run an upload speed test and test with representative audio and motion before the event. Monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while streaming. A connection that repeatedly drops may be associated with upload reliability or another ingest issue; the log and YouTube’s messages are more useful than assuming that a retry switch is the cure. YouTube’s stream-health guidance explains what to monitor.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds, along with a supported streaming protocol and codec combination. Check the current YouTube guidance against the encoder’s settings. These are configuration recommendations; they do not, by themselves, establish or fix a transport disconnection.

Use bounded retries and fix the underlying fault

Retries can keep a process trying while the stream remains broken. When the relevant protocol supports retry limits, set bounds suitable for the workflow, then address the cause indicated by the logs and stream health: source availability, URL or key, network conditions, or a service-side issue. Do not add HTTP reconnect switches to an RTMP/RTMPS output and treat them as a YouTube publishing fix.
