First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg’s -reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs, not generally to an outgoing RTMP/RTMPS connection to YouTube. For an HTTP source, use the relevant HTTP retry options; for temporary RTMP output failures, FFmpeg documents a FIFO-muxer recovery pattern. Then check YouTube’s stream URL and key, encoder settings, and upload capacity. These steps address different failure points and cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
1. Identify whether the input or output is failing
Read the FFmpeg command and the first meaningful error line before changing flags. The -i argument identifies an input; the output is the destination at the end of the command. An HTTP address after -i is a different connection from an RTMP or RTMPS URL used to send the finished stream to YouTube.
- HTTP input disconnects or ends: HTTP protocol reconnect options may apply to that input.
- RTMP/RTMPS output write fails: HTTP input reconnect options do not establish outgoing RTMP recovery; consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer pattern.
- FFmpeg exits: investigate why it exited. A process supervisor may relaunch it, but that does not fix invalid media, credentials, settings, or an unavailable ingest endpoint.
FFmpeg documents the HTTP options in its protocol documentation and output recovery via FIFO in its format and muxer documentation.
2. If an HTTP input needs reconnecting
Use HTTP reconnect switches only for the HTTP input they are meant to control. FFmpeg documents these options:

reconnectretries when the connection disconnects before reaching EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and attempts to reconnect; FFmpeg notes this can be useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_streamedpermits reconnecting streamed or non-seekable inputs.reconnect_delay_max,reconnect_max_retries, andreconnect_delay_total_maxprovide controls for retry delay and limits.
Check the protocol documentation for the installed FFmpeg version and build, then place the options so they apply to the intended HTTP input. Do not add them as a generic fix for an RTMP output write failure.
3. If the RTMP output fails temporarily
FFmpeg documents using the FIFO muxer to keep processing in real time and attempt output recovery after a temporary failure. Its RTMP example uses -f fifo -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. Adapt the example to your command, source, FFmpeg build, and YouTube ingest configuration; it is a starting point, not a universal command or a guarantee that YouTube will resume the same stream without interruption.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Read the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation for the complete option context. Validate the command with a test stream before relying on it for a radio schedule.
4. Verify YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and the current stream key used by your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the endpoint and connection details shown for your stream.
- If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the key in FFmpeg or the encoder configuration. A reset key will not work until the encoder is updated.
- Keep the key private. Do not include it in screenshots, published command examples, or logs shared for troubleshooting.
YouTube explains stream keys and their management in its stream-key help. Its encoder setup guide covers configuring an encoder.

5. Check media settings and upload headroom
Match the encoder to YouTube’s supported guidance
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate table rather than an old fixed bitrate copied from a tutorial. See the YouTube encoder settings.
Leave capacity for network variation
YouTube advises that the total streaming bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Count both primary and backup stream bitrates if you send both. YouTube also warns that network disruption can break a stream; reduce resolution or bitrate and retest if your connection cannot sustain the selected settings. Its network tips for live streaming explain the bandwidth guidance.

6. If FFmpeg exits, separate restart from recovery
A process supervisor on a VPS or another always-on machine can restart FFmpeg after it exits. That is process management, not a cure for a bad input, invalid stream key, unsupported codec, unsuitable bitrate, or unavailable YouTube ingest endpoint. Configure restarts only after identifying the exit cause, and verify how the supervisor behaves in your environment. A secondary guide discusses this deployment approach: FFmpeg streaming to YouTube Live on a VPS.

- Test before the scheduled livestream, as YouTube recommends, and watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build, command with secrets redacted, failure timestamp, and exact first error lines.
- Change one relevant setting at a time—input retry, output recovery, key, media settings, or network load—so the next test can show which layer changed.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring during a broadcast. Its guidance notes: “Have a reliable network: A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
