To fix FFmpeg reconnect errors, first identify whether the failing connection is the input FFmpeg reads or the output it publishes to YouTube. HTTP reconnect flags can help with some HTTP(S) inputs; they do not automatically retry every RTMP(S) publishing failure, restart a crashed FFmpeg process, or repair YouTube format, key, source, network, or power problems.
For a devotional stream, compare FFmpeg’s log with the timestamped health message in YouTube Live Control Room before changing options. The exact command, error text, FFmpeg build, and YouTube warning determine which fix applies.
How do I find which connection is failing?
FFmpeg has an input side and an output side. The input may be a remote HTTP(S) feed or a local recording; the output to YouTube Live is commonly RTMP(S). A reconnect option only affects the protocol and direction it is configured for.
- Save evidence before editing the command. Record the complete command with stream keys and other secrets redacted, FFmpeg version and build information, the full log around the first failure, and its timestamp.
- Identify the failing URL. Determine whether the error belongs to the input or the YouTube output, and note its protocol: HTTP(S), RTMP(S), or another protocol.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the stream’s timestamped health messages and compare their times with FFmpeg’s log. YouTube lists format, bitrate, codec, audio, and other ingestion problems in its live streaming error messages guide.
- Match the first failure to the relevant layer. An HTTP source disconnect, an RTMP(S) publish error, a normal file ending, and an FFmpeg process exit are different problems. Do not assume every reconnect message means the stream key is wrong.
If the log and health warning do not identify the fault, a definitive command-line fix cannot be chosen from “reconnect error” alone. Preserve the sanitized command and logs for diagnosis rather than adding flags at random.

Which FFmpeg reconnect options apply to an HTTP live input?
If FFmpeg reads a genuinely endless HTTP stream, HTTP protocol options may let that input retry after certain failures. Put them immediately before the -i URL they configure. This illustrative shell template is not tested for a particular feed or FFmpeg build:
ffmpeg
-reconnect 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_at_eof 1
-i "$INPUT_URL"
... output options ...
"$OUTPUT_URL"
These switches cover different conditions, as described in the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation:
reconnectretries after disconnection before EOF.reconnect_streamedpermits retries for streamed or non-seekable inputs after errors.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and reconnects; FFmpeg describes this as useful for live or endless streams.
Do not put HTTP input options on the YouTube output and expect them to control RTMP(S) publishing. FFmpeg options are position-sensitive: options for an input belong before that input URL. Confirm that your installed binary supports the options with ffmpeg -h protocol=http; availability, defaults, and syntax can depend on the build.

When network errors or HTTP responses trigger the failure
Use the observed error to decide whether more specific HTTP retry behavior is appropriate. FFmpeg documents reconnect_on_network_error for TCP/TLS errors during connection and reconnect_on_http_error for selected HTTP response codes. The latter can take explicit codes or classes such as 5xx. The documentation also describes retry counts, maximum individual and total delays, and handling for Retry-After.
Check each option against the installed build’s help and the protocol documentation before using it. Retry limits bound attempts; they cannot make an unavailable source return or guarantee that playback resumes at the exact previous media position. These HTTP options are not general RTMP(S) output retries or process-restart logic.
When the source is a local file or playlist
EOF may be normal: a recording ended, or a playlist ran out of items. Enabling reconnect_at_eof without confirming intended behavior can cause repeated retries or prevent the content from advancing as expected. Establish whether the source should end, loop, or move to another item before treating EOF as a connection failure.

What if FFmpeg cannot publish to YouTube?
If the output is failing, troubleshoot publishing separately from HTTP input retries. Check FFmpeg’s output error and YouTube’s health message, then verify the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room. Make sure the key has not been reset or replaced, and confirm that the output protocol and network path are appropriate for the selected stream.
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS and describes supported codecs and settings. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a two-second keyframe frequency, which should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so use the table row for your actual setup rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Follow the current warning shown for your stream.

How do I check whether the network is stable enough?
Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube’s current streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate and warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If the connection is shared, account for other devices and traffic as well.
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom.
- Check whether errors coincide with an interruption in the connection or another network event.
- Test with audio and movement representative of the actual devotional stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Do not buy a router, cable, computer, or UPS as a presumed fix without evidence that the relevant component is causing the interruption.

Reconnect flags handle certain protocol-level failures while FFmpeg is running. If the FFmpeg process exits unexpectedly, use an operating-system service manager or process supervisor to restart it, log restart times, and alert a person if failures keep repeating. Add supervision after addressing the underlying fault: it cannot repair an invalid stream key, unavailable source, unsupported option, or persistent network or ingestion problem.

If you have a backup encoder, test failover before relying on it. YouTube’s streaming guidance suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Treat that as a controlled test, not as evidence that a particular cable or hardware purchase will fix the original problem.
Why can FFmpeg reconnect while the YouTube stream still stops?
“Reconnect” may refer to FFmpeg restoring one connection, not the full path from source to viewer. The input may return while output publishing remains broken; the process may exit; a local file may reach EOF; YouTube may reject the media format; or an ongoing network interruption may prevent delivery. Compare timestamps in FFmpeg’s log and Live Control Room, identify the failed layer, and check whether content resumes, restarts, or skips after recovery. No reconnect flag guarantees uninterrupted service or exact playback continuity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep uploaded devotional recordings or a playlist live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; there is one free day per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly billing are also available; cancel any time.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team.
