If an FFmpeg playlist has silence or a visual stall between songs, start by checking the files’ durations and audio/video end times—not by changing YouTube’s bitrate. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one, so inaccurate duration metadata or streams that end at different times can disrupt the boundary. If the local output is continuous but YouTube’s playback is not, then check the encoder and network path.

Find out where the gap enters the stream

  1. Check the local FFmpeg output. Listen to or inspect the encoded output around a playlist boundary. If the same silence or stall is there, focus on the media timeline and the concat method.
  2. Compare it with YouTube playback. If the local output is continuous but YouTube reports delivery or stream-health problems, investigate the ingest path instead.
  3. Keep the two diagnoses separate. A healthy YouTube ingest does not prove the playlist is gapless, and more upload bandwidth cannot repair a flawed media timeline. YouTube recommends checking the preview, testing the stream, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. See its streaming tips.

Check file durations and stream endings

For each playlist item, compare the container’s reported duration with the audio and video stream durations or end timestamps. Look for truncated files, unusual metadata-derived durations, and audio and video that end at different times.

The concat demuxer uses one file’s duration to calculate the timestamps of the next. The FFmpeg documentation warns: “The duration of each file is used to adjust the timestamps of the next file: if the duration is incorrect (because it was computed using the bit-rate or because the file is truncated, for example), it can cause artifacts.” Read the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Correct a duration only when you know it

A concat script can include a duration directive to override a stored duration when a more accurate value is known. Use it only with a reliable corrected duration: guessing can shift later files and make the timeline worse. If audio and video genuinely have different lengths, fix that mismatch during media preparation rather than masking it with an arbitrary duration.

Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.

Choose the concat method that fits your files

The concat demuxer is not automatically gapless. It is suitable when the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases and stream-copy-style concatenation is appropriate. The concat filter is the option to consider when concatenation requires re-encoding. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating media describes the distinction.

Method Use it when Trade-off
Concat demuxer Files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and stream-copy-style concatenation suits the workflow. It relies on file durations to advance timestamps; inaccurate durations or streams ending at different times can cause artifacts.
Concat filter You need a re-encoding workflow to concatenate the inputs or make them consistent. It requires filtering and encoding rather than relying on the demuxer’s timestamp stitching.
Normalize files first Playlist items vary in stream layout, codec, or time base. It adds a preparation or transcoding step; check the resulting boundaries.

There is no single FFmpeg command that fixes every playlist. Select the method based on stream compatibility, whether re-encoding is acceptable, duration accuracy, and whether the output has been checked at the boundaries. Options such as -stream_loop -1, -re, or arbitrary timestamp flags do not correct inaccurate per-file durations or make incompatible streams compatible. Re-encoding can address format mismatches, but you should still validate the audio and video timing.

Check YouTube’s encoder and network settings

Do this after confirming the media timeline, especially if the local output is clean. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; its bitrate recommendations vary by configuration.

  • Protocol and video: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and supported live video codecs.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom.
  • Before and during the broadcast: Test with representative audio and motion, check the Live Control Room preview before starting, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality while live.

These are YouTube’s operational recommendations; the keyframe and stereo-audio figures are not a diagnosis of a playlist boundary. A stable ingest can carry a playlist that already has gaps.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next action
The silence or stall is also present in local output. File boundary, duration metadata, input timestamps, or audio/video stream lengths. Compare each file’s container duration with its stream endpoints; correct reliable duration errors or prepare the assets consistently.
Local output is continuous, but YouTube playback or stream health is poor. Encoder configuration, upload capacity, or ingest path. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom, inspect preview, and monitor stream health.
Only some playlist files produce boundary artifacts. Those files may differ in streams, codecs, time bases, durations, or stream end times. Compare their media properties with files that play cleanly; normalize incompatible items or use a re-encoding workflow.
A duration override makes later boundaries worse. The override may be guessed or may not account for unequal audio/video lengths. Remove the unreliable override and establish accurate durations and stream endpoints before setting it again.

For a case-specific diagnosis, the useful evidence is the FFmpeg version and build, complete command, concat playlist, probe output for every file, and the relevant FFmpeg log excerpt. Without those details, you cannot reliably choose between incorrect duration metadata, incompatible streams or time bases, unequal audio/video lengths, and an ingest or network issue.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a 24/7 YouTube music stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not fix bad media timestamps, so check the playlist boundaries first.
