Fallout: New Vegas mod crashes usually come from one of three different failures: the game or its executable cannot start correctly, a plugin depends on a missing master, or loaded plugins conflict. Treating every crash as a load-order problem wastes time. Start with a clean, writable installation and working launch prerequisites; then repair dependencies, establish a guide-compatible load order, and use FNVEdit to identify genuine record errors.
The safest method is to keep a known-good Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) profile, test on a new save, and change only a few mods at a time. The steps below separate failures that happen before the main menu from crashes while loading a save, changing cells, or playing, so each fix is applied at the stage where it can actually help.
Identify what kind of failure you have
Note exactly when the game fails and what message appears. A crash before the launcher or main menu points to installation, permissions, drivers, INI files, the 4GB patch, xNVSE, or Windows security settings. A warning such as “This plugin cannot be loaded because it depends on missing master…” is a dependency failure. A game that reaches the menu but crashes while loading a save, entering a cell, or using a particular object is more likely suffering from a conflict, bad asset, script issue, or unresolved reference.

A load-order change cannot repair a missing executable patch, and reinstalling a driver will not supply a plugin master. Keep those categories separate throughout troubleshooting.

Build a clean, writable baseline
Move the game out of protected folders
Install Fallout: New Vegas and the modding tools in a location where your account can write files without Windows virtualization or cloud synchronization. Viva New Vegas recommends a path such as C:Games rather than C:Program Files, C:Program Files (x86), the Desktop, or Documents. OneDrive management and protected-folder permissions can prevent MO2, patchers, or the game from writing the files they need.
- Create a simple game directory, for example
C:GamesFallout New Vegas, if your platform allows moving the installation. - Install or move MO2 and the relevant utilities so they can access the game and profile directories.
- In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions. A file named
FalloutNV.exe,.dll, or.espmust not be confused with an extensionless file. - Start MO2 once and confirm that its profile folder, virtual file system, and overwrite directory are writable.
Disable Mandatory ASLR for the 32-bit executable
Viva New Vegas identifies Mandatory Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) as a cause of crashes in this 32-bit game. ASLR randomizes a program’s starting address; that behavior is not expected by Fallout: New Vegas and can destabilize a modded process.
- Open Windows Security > App & browser control > Exploit protection.
- Choose Exploit protection settings, then open Program settings.
- Add
FalloutNV.exefrom the actual game directory. - Override the system setting for mandatory ASLR and set it to Off for that executable only.
- Apply the setting and restart the game through MO2.
Do not turn off exploit protection globally. This change is a targeted compatibility setting for the 32-bit executable.

- Graphics driver: install a stable driver for your GPU. Bethesda specifically recorded a launch problem for AMD RX users on Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1; that is a version-specific warning, not a universal statement about all AMD drivers. If you use that driver and cannot launch, check Bethesda’s current guidance and consider a supported rollback.
- Game-file verification: use Steam’s or GOG Galaxy’s file-verification command when core files may be damaged.
- Permissions and antivirus: allow the game, MO2, xNVSE, and patchers to read and write their installation and profile directories. Exclude only trusted files and folders.
- INI reset: back up and remove the FalloutNV INI files so the launcher can generate fresh defaults. Reapply documented INI tweaks afterward rather than copying an unknown old configuration.
- Compatibility troubleshooting: use Windows’ compatibility tool only when ordinary permissions and driver checks do not resolve the launch failure.
Check the 4GB patcher and xNVSE
Viva New Vegas lists a missing or incorrectly installed 4GB/Epic patcher and xNVSE as common reasons a modded game crashes or appears to do nothing at startup. Confirm that the patcher matches your distribution (Steam, GOG, or Epic), that it was run against the executable you actually launch, and that xNVSE is installed in the same game directory.
- Run the 4GB or Epic patcher supplied for your edition, not a patcher for a different executable.
- Launch the game from the New Vegas entry configured in MO2 so the virtual file system and script extender are active.
- If xNVSE-dependent mods fail silently, verify xNVSE’s files and the MO2 executable path before investigating their plugins.
- Do not assume that a successful launcher means the executable patch is present; a patched process and a merely installed file are different checks.
Repair a missing master without corrupting a plugin
What “missing master” means
A plugin master is another plugin whose records are referenced by the dependent plugin. The required filename is stored in the dependent plugin header. If that exact file is absent or disabled in the active MO2 profile, the game cannot safely load the dependent plugin.
Use the filename in the error
- Read the complete warning in MO2 or the game and copy the exact missing filename, including its extension and punctuation.
- Determine which installed mod supplies that file. A mod’s archive name is not always identical to its plugin filename.
- Install the matching version of the dependency in the same MO2 profile and enable its plugin.
- Return to the profile’s plugin list and confirm that the master is enabled and positioned before the dependent plugin.
- Launch a new test game. If the warning names another master, repeat the process for that exact file.
Master files are version-specific. Installing a similarly named plugin, an old release, or a file from another game will not satisfy the dependency and can create new conflicts.
When disabling the dependent mod is the correct repair
If you no longer want the dependent mod, or it is obsolete and intentionally unused, disable or remove the dependent plugin and its assets. That removes the request for the master. Do not keep a broken plugin enabled simply because its files remain in the downloads folder.

Never open another author’s plugin solely to delete its master entry. xEdit documentation warns that removing a master can drastically change the mod’s intended behavior; records may still contain form IDs from that master and become invalid or misleading. Restore the exact dependency or remove the dependent plugin instead.
Establish a controlled load order
Use MO2 as the source of truth
MO2 controls which files and plugins are visible for a profile. Keep separate profiles for a baseline and for experiments, and do not mix a profile’s enabled plugins with files manually copied into the game directory. Before changing anything, export or copy the profile’s modlist.txt and loadorder.txt.
Run LOOT as a diagnostic baseline
LOOT recognizes Fallout: New Vegas, scans installed plugins and its masterlist metadata, and can sort and apply a load order. It may require administrator rights to write the order for this game. Use its warnings to identify missing masters, dirty or incompatible placements, and obvious requirements, but treat the result as a starting point rather than an automatic substitute for a mod guide.

- Select Fallout: New Vegas and let it scan the active plugins.
- Review every warning, especially missing masters and messages about a plugin that must load before or after another.
- Apply the order only after saving a copy of the current MO2 order.
- Resolve guide-specific exceptions manually; do not blindly force LOOT’s result over explicit instructions from the guide you follow.
Follow Viva New Vegas’ profile procedure when using that guide
Viva New Vegas supplies a guide-specific loadorder.txt. Place that file in the MO2 profile, press F5 to refresh the profile, enable all listed plugins, and launch through the New Vegas executable in MO2. The guide notes that newly added mods are placed at the bottom and may need manual repositioning.

- Open the profile folder from MO2’s profile-management controls.
- Back up the existing
loadorder.txt, then place the guide’s file there. - Press F5 in MO2 so the profile reloads the order.
- Enable the guide’s plugins and verify that each required master appears earlier in the list.
- Place any added plugin according to the guide’s instructions. If you cannot determine its position, return to the guide’s baseline instead of guessing.
- Use MO2’s New Vegas launch option; do not start an unmodded executable shortcut.
Viva New Vegas does not support setups with unreviewed additions. A baseline that works exactly as documented is valuable because it gives you a reproducible point for testing later changes.
Find unresolved references and record conflicts with FNVEdit
Run the reference-error check
FNVEdit (xEdit for Fallout: New Vegas) can load the active plugin set and inspect records across masters and overrides. Start it through MO2 so it sees the same virtual files and plugins as the game.
- Add FNVEdit as an executable in MO2 and launch it from that list.
- When the module-selection window appears, load the full active set, including masters, unless a guide gives a narrower instruction.
- Wait for background loading to finish and acknowledge any normal informational messages.
- Use the tool’s reference-error check and inspect the reported plugin and form ID.
- For a suspected conflict, select the record and compare the columns for each plugin override. Look for an unintended final value, deleted record, wrong form reference, or an override that loads after the intended winner.
Distinguish harmless mismatches from serious errors
xEdit documentation distinguishes ordinary definition mismatches from unresolved references. Its warning is explicit: “Unresolved Reference errors … are very serious as they indicate a record from the mod is trying to reference something, but what it is looking for is missing from the mod or the master of the mod.” If the error survives a correct installation of every listed master, it belongs with the mod author rather than being casually repaired by the player.
- Missing master: fix the profile’s dependency state first; xEdit cannot invent the absent plugin.
- Unresolved reference inside a released mod: record the plugin name, form ID, and context, then report it to the author with a reproducible load order.
- Intentional override: a later plugin may deliberately replace an earlier value. Confirm the mod’s documentation before changing it.
- Accidental conflict: use a documented compatibility patch or move the plugin only when the guide or author specifies the required order.
Do not save an xEdit edit merely to make an error list look clean. A cosmetic fix can remove intended behavior or leave broken form IDs behind.

Repair missing meshes and patch regressions
Red diamonds, invisible objects, or missing geometry indicate an asset problem rather than a normal load-order warning. Viva New Vegas recommends a specific recovery sequence:
- Verify the game files in Steam or GOG Galaxy.
- Run the correct 4GB/Epic or executable patcher again for your game version.
- Run the Vanilla BSAs Patcher again.
- Start the game through MO2 and check the same location on a new test save.
File validation can revert BSA patching and the executable patch, so the patchers must be run again afterward. If the symptom remains, inspect the mod’s archive in MO2 for the expected mesh and texture paths and check whether another mod’s loose files are overriding them.
Isolate a crash that survives the checks
Preserve the evidence
Before disabling anything, export the active modlist.txt and loadorder.txt from the MO2 profile. Copy the last known-good profile, including its INI settings, so you can return to it without reconstructing the setup from memory. Keep save backups separate from the game and profile folders.
Use a clean test save
- Duplicate the known-good profile and name the copy for the experiment.
- Disable the newest or most suspect addition in the copy, including its plugin and any optional patches.
- Start a new game rather than repeatedly loading a save that was created with removed content.
- Reach the location or action that previously crashed and record the result.
- If the baseline works, re-enable a small group of related mods and test again.
- When the crash returns, split that group in half and retest. Continue narrowing until one plugin, asset set, or interaction remains.
Testing groups is faster than toggling a large list one item at a time, while still producing a reproducible change. After identifying the group, inspect its LOOT warnings, FNVEdit conflicts, masters, scripts, and asset paths. A crash that appears only on an old save may be save-state damage rather than proof that the current baseline is broken.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Changing several layers at once: reinstalling drivers, sorting plugins, and replacing INIs together removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
- Editing a master list by hand: deleting a dependency entry can make a plugin appear loadable while invalidating its records.
- Trusting an automatic sort blindly: LOOT is useful for diagnostics, but a guide’s explicit ordering and patch instructions take precedence.
- Launching outside MO2: a desktop shortcut may bypass the profile’s virtual files, INIs, or xNVSE.
- Validating files and stopping there: validation may undo executable and BSA patching, so rerun those patchers.
- Testing only an old save: removed or changed mods can leave persistent script and reference state. Always include a new-game test.
- Keeping no rollback point: without copies of
modlist.txt,loadorder.txt, and saves, you cannot reliably reproduce or undo a change.
A repeatable recovery checklist
- Record the exact crash stage and message.
- Use a writable installation outside protected or cloud-managed folders.
- Enable visible file extensions and confirm MO2 can write to its profile.
- Apply the targeted ASLR setting for
FalloutNV.exeif required. - Complete Bethesda’s driver, permissions, antivirus, INI, and file-verification checks.
- Verify the correct 4GB/Epic patcher and xNVSE for your platform.
- Resolve every missing master by restoring the exact dependency or disabling the dependent plugin.
- Back up the MO2 profile, then use LOOT for a diagnostic scan.
- Apply the ordering procedure for your guide; for Viva New Vegas, use its profile
loadorder.txt, press F5, and launch the New Vegas entry in MO2. - Run FNVEdit’s reference check and inspect conflicts without deleting master entries.
- For missing meshes, verify files and rerun the executable and Vanilla BSAs patchers.
- Test a clean profile and new save, then re-enable additions in small groups until the failing change is reproducible.
