Error 0xC004F213 means Windows reports that it could not find a product key on your device. It does not, by itself, prove that you need to buy another license. Start at Settings > System > Activation, confirm your Windows edition and the current error, then run the Activation troubleshooter. If you already own a valid key or digital license, try to restore or enter it before purchasing anything.
What error 0xC004F213 means
Microsoft defines the message as: “0xC004F213 – Windows reported that no product key was found on your device.” It describes what Windows failed to locate; it does not identify the underlying reason. An absent key, a license that Windows cannot currently match to the device, or an edition mismatch are possibilities to check—not causes established by the error alone.
Windows licensing is associated with device hardware. A significant hardware change, such as replacing a motherboard, can prevent Windows from finding the matching license after a restart. If Windows came preinstalled and the motherboard was replaced, Microsoft says a new license may be required. After a repair or rebuild, the installed Windows version or product key may also differ from what the license covers.
Check activation status and Windows edition
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Check whether the installed edition is Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro, and note the activation status and displayed error code.
- Use the code currently shown on this page to guide the next step. The displayed code can change after troubleshooting or another activation attempt.
Run the Activation troubleshooter
On the Activation page, select Troubleshoot if that option is available. Windows is not activated for this option to appear, and an administrator sign-in may be required. Follow the prompts and check Activation again when the troubleshooter finishes.

Use a product key you already own
If you have a valid 25-character product key, enter it through Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. Make sure the key applies to the Windows edition installed on the device: a Home license does not activate a Pro installation, or vice versa.
Look for the key in the purchase-confirmation email, device packaging, or a Certificate of Authenticity. Microsoft says it can retrieve keys bought from its online store; if you bought Windows elsewhere, check the seller’s records and your purchase materials.

Reactivate a digital license after a hardware change
If activation failed after a significant hardware change and you use a digital license, Microsoft’s reactivation process relies on linking that license to your Microsoft account. Then:
- Open Settings > System > Activation and select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license.
- From the associated-device list, select the current device and choose Activate.
The Windows edition installed now must match the edition covered by the license. If the device does not appear in the list or activation still fails, continue to the support options below rather than assuming the license is unusable.

If you still cannot activate Windows
- No valid key or reusable license: On the Activation page, select Go to Microsoft Store and follow the instructions to purchase a digital license. Do this only after checking for an existing key or digital license that may apply.
- New PC that should have included Windows: Contact the device manufacturer about the license supplied with the computer.
- Work or school device: Contact your organization’s support team if it manages the device or its Windows licensing.
- Other activation failures: Contact Microsoft Support if the troubleshooter and applicable reactivation steps do not resolve the problem. Check the current code in Settings before looking for code-specific help.
