Error 0x8000FFFF does not identify one universal Windows problem. The right fix depends on what you were doing when it appeared. If you suspect damaged Windows system files, start with Microsoft’s repair sequence: install available updates, restart, run DISM, then run System File Checker (SFC). If it appears during Windows Update, use the update-specific checks below. Avoid applying a Windows Server-only diagnosis to a Windows 10 or 11 PC.

What does error 0x8000FFFF mean?

The code by itself is not enough to diagnose a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. Note whether it appeared during Windows Update, System Restore, an application, or another task, and whether the problem began after an update or software change. Also note whether Windows still starts normally.

Microsoft’s documentation for this exact code describes Windows Server update failures, not a confirmed cause for Windows 10 or 11 client computers. In that Server-specific context, Microsoft says the error is usually related to CryptCATAdminAddCatalog and may indicate corruption in catroot2 or system files. That explanation and its recommended in-place upgrade should not be treated as a proven fix for a client PC. See Microsoft’s Windows Server guidance for error 0x8000FFFF.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC

For a Windows 10 or 11 system-file repair, Microsoft recommends installing the latest Windows updates and restarting before running SFC. Then use an elevated Command Prompt to run DISM first and SFC second. These are built-in Windows tools.

  1. Install available Windows updates, then restart the PC.
  2. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
  3. Enter this command and press Enter:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  4. Wait for DISM to finish. Then enter:
    sfc /scannow
  5. When SFC completes, restart if prompted and retry the operation that produced the error.

Microsoft describes SFC as a tool that checks system files for corruption and helps fix problems that may cause Windows to malfunction. DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update; if Windows Update is unavailable, Microsoft documents using an alternative repair source. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the current steps and details.

If 0x8000FFFF appears during Windows Update

Use Windows Update troubleshooting steps because the triggering operation is the update itself. Microsoft’s guidance includes checking for pending restart actions, checking the drive for errors, trying a clean restart to investigate software conflicts, and repairing system files with DISM and SFC. These are troubleshooting options; the code alone does not prove that any particular cause applies.

Choose a recovery option only if the problem persists

If ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, choose recovery based on what changed and how much disruption you can accept. Microsoft recommends starting with the least disruptive suitable option. Available choices can differ by Windows version.

Option When it may fit Data and disruption
Windows troubleshooters and system-file repair For an update problem or suspected system-file issue before using recovery. Start here when applicable; these steps are less disruptive than rolling back or reinstalling Windows.
Uninstall a recent update If the problem began after a Windows update. Removes the selected update; use Microsoft’s instructions to choose the appropriate recovery route.
System Restore If a restore point is available and the issue appears related to a recent system change. Rolls back system files and settings without rolling back personal files.
Reset Windows If less disruptive options have not resolved the issue and reset is appropriate for the symptoms. Review the reset choices carefully; the effect on personal files depends on the option selected.
Reinstall from installation media As a later recovery step when other suitable options have failed. Microsoft warns that this reinstall removes everything from the device. Back up important files first.

Before using recovery, back up important files and review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. For a managed work or school device, contact the organization’s IT support.

When to get help

If the error continues, the next useful evidence is the exact task that triggers it, when it started, recent updates or software changes, and any relevant error details or logs. If Windows will not start or you cannot complete recovery safely, seek qualified support rather than trying Server-specific fixes on a client PC.
