Fix Enshrouded systematically: first identify whether you have a crash, rendering hitch, low frame rate, or network problem; then verify the published hardware baseline, update the game and graphics driver, reset graphics settings after major patches, and change one variable at a time. An SSD can improve loading and asset-streaming consistency, but it cannot guarantee higher FPS when the GPU is the limit. Persistent crashes should be reported with DxDiag, logs, and save files so Keen Games can reproduce them.
Start by identifying the symptom
Different failures have different causes. Write down exactly what happens before changing settings; this prevents a network problem from being mistaken for a graphics problem and gives support a useful reproduction case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCrash to desktop or failure to launch
- Record whether the crash occurs before the main menu, while loading a world, immediately after changing graphics options, or only after a long session.
- Note your GPU model, driver version, audio device, game version, and whether the affected world has a large player base. Official hotfixes have addressed graphics initialization on older AMD cards, an RX 7000-series driver-related crash, a specific audio-hardware failure, and crashes in large worlds after extended play.
- Test whether a new world behaves differently from the existing save. That distinction is valuable in a bug report.
Low FPS or rendering hitching
- Record resolution, graphics preset, average FPS, GPU utilization, VRAM use, and whether the problem appears everywhere or mainly in dense bases, caves, or newly loaded areas.
- Low average FPS is a sustained rendering limit; a brief freeze or repeated hitch is a frame-time problem. Both can occur without any multiplayer connection fault.
Multiplayer lag, disconnects, or an empty server list
If players rubber-band, disappear, or cannot see a peer-to-peer session while your local FPS counter remains normal, treat it as a network-path problem. Use the network checklist rather than lowering graphics settings.
Check the official PC requirements
Compare your system with the published Steam requirements before buying hardware or chasing individual options. The minimum tier is intended to establish compatibility, not to promise a particular preset or frame rate.

A system below the minimum can suffer launch failures, severe hitching, or unstable performance that software changes cannot fully correct. A machine around the minimum may run the game but require a lower resolution or reduced settings. Recommended-class hardware is a more appropriate starting point for higher visual presets, but it still does not establish a universal FPS number because resolution, world complexity, drivers, and patches vary.
Use a controlled troubleshooting order
Make one change, reproduce the problem, and record the result. This is slower than applying a dozen tweaks at once, but it tells you which action helped and makes a later support report credible.
- Capture a baseline. Note the game build, Windows version, GPU and CPU, driver version, resolution, preset, FPS or frame-time behavior, and the exact trigger. Save a screenshot or short video when practical.
- Install the latest Enshrouded update available in Steam. Stability fixes are version-specific, so troubleshooting an old build can reproduce a problem already corrected by a hotfix.
- Install a current stable graphics driver. Driver state is particularly important on AMD RX 7000-series cards and on RTX 50-series systems because official hotfixes called out older or recommended driver versions for stability.
- Reset in-game graphics to defaults after a major update. Update 3 changed Steam Deck defaults and added FSR3. A configuration carried over from an earlier build may not be a meaningful baseline.
- Reproduce the issue under the reset baseline. Use the same world, location, and activity when comparing results.
- Change one setting at a time. Keep a short log of the option, its previous value, and the observed change. Do not assume a setting combination is universally optimal; official material does not establish a guaranteed best-FPS preset or a fixed gain for any individual option.
Fix common crash triggers
“Failed to initialize the graphics system” on an older AMD card
Hotfix 3 specifically addressed this graphics-initialization error on older AMD hardware. Update Enshrouded and the AMD driver before trying more invasive changes. If the error remains on the current build, include the exact message, card model, driver version, and whether a new world also fails in your report.
Crash on an RX 7000-series card
Hotfix 24, revision 697669, fixed a crash caused by an older driver on RX 7000-series systems. Check the driver version first, reboot after installation, and retest with the game’s graphics reset. Do not conclude that the GPU is defective until the current game and driver combination has been tested.

Stability issue on an RTX 50-series card
Hotfix 27 updated the recommended Nvidia driver for RTX 50-series stability. Install the current driver recommended for your card by the game maker, then test without overlays or custom graphics profiles so the result reflects a clean configuration.
Crash after a long session or in a large base
Hotfix 27 (revision 716889, 2025) fixed a crash that could occur after long play periods in worlds with large player bases. If a current build still fails only after extended sessions or in a heavily built area, record how long you played, the approximate player and structure count, the location, and whether a smaller or new world is stable. That information is more actionable than a generic “random crash” description.

The same Hotfix 27 addressed one audio-hardware crash class. If changing the output device, headset, or audio interface changes the symptom, write down the device model and connection type. Test once with the normal device and once with a basic alternate output, but do not permanently remove hardware unless support asks you to.
Crash immediately after changing graphics settings
Use the game’s reset-to-default graphics option and restart before experimenting again. Change one option per launch. If you cannot reach the menu, document the last setting changed and use the web bug form with the log and DxDiag files described below.

Reduce stuttering and low FPS without guessing
Determine whether the GPU or CPU is limiting the frame time
Watch utilization while reproducing the hitch. GPU utilization near its limit with high VRAM use points toward resolution, texture, effects, or upscaling choices. Low GPU utilization during a crowded base or simulation-heavy scene can indicate a CPU or game-thread limit. A sudden disk or shader-related pause during a new-area load is different from a permanently low average FPS.
Use resolution and upscaling as the first reversible test
Run the same scene at a lower resolution or with the available upscaling option, including FSR3 where supported by your current build. If FPS rises substantially, the workload is primarily rendering-bound. If it barely changes, lowering resolution is unlikely to solve the limiting factor; restore the previous value and investigate CPU, world complexity, or streaming behavior instead.
Test heavy scenes, not only an empty field
Dense bases, caves, and newly loaded areas can produce different frame times from a quiet exterior. Use a repeatable route and camera position, allow the scene to finish loading, and compare the same activity after every change. A setting that appears successful in an empty area may not address the hitch that matters during building or combat.
Do not stack unverified “optimization” tweaks
The official updates document targeted fixes and new features, but they do not publish one universal preset or a guaranteed FPS increase for an individual setting, driver, utility, or storage device. Avoid treating an internet tweak as a measured result for every PC. Keep changes reversible and remove overlays, injectors, or custom profiles one at a time if they complicate testing.

Will an SSD help?
Yes, an SSD is a sensible upgrade when Enshrouded is installed on a hard drive because the published recommended specification calls for SSD storage. Faster random access can improve loading and make asset streaming more consistent, reducing the likelihood that a disk-bound load feels like a freeze. It is not a guaranteed cure for a GPU-limited frame rate, a CPU-limited simulation, or network lag.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To test storage as a variable, move or reinstall the game to an SSD with at least the required free capacity, keep the installation on one drive during comparison, and reproduce the same loading route. Compare loading duration and hitch frequency separately from average FPS. If the frame rate in an already loaded scene is unchanged, storage was not the primary rendering limit.
Separate network lag from rendering performance
Enshrouded multiplayer currently uses IPv4. Keen Games’ connection guidance targets port reachability, Steam configuration, DNS, and packet loss rather than graphics settings.
- Confirm the PC meets the game requirements. A severely overloaded machine can make network symptoms harder to interpret.
- Allow the game’s default query port, 15637, and the required Steam ports through the router or firewall according to your network setup. Make changes carefully and avoid exposing unrelated services.
- Clear Steam’s download cache. In the Steam client, open Settings, Downloads, choose “Clear Download Cache,” and sign in again when prompted.
- Flush DNS. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run
ipconfig /flushdns. The command should report that the DNS resolver cache was successfully flushed. - Try Google Public DNS if name resolution remains unreliable. The documented addresses are
8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4. Record your original DNS settings so you can revert if necessary. - Use wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi packet loss is high. A cable test isolates wireless interference from the game and router.
- Check Steam privacy settings. A peer-to-peer session may be invisible when the Steam profile is not public. Test visibility after changing the setting, then return to your preferred privacy level if it was not the cause.
These steps address connection drops, an empty server list, or players that fail to appear. They will not raise a low local FPS counter. Conversely, lowering shadows cannot repair packet loss.

Steam Deck first-launch behavior
On Steam Deck, the first startup can show a black screen for one or two minutes while the client and shaders are prepared. Wait through that period before treating it as a failed launch. If the game remains unavailable after the preparation period, record the Deck model, game build, and repeatability, then use the same reporting process as on PC.
Update 3 (version 0.7.3.0, July 29, 2024) changed Steam Deck defaults and added FSR3. Reset graphics after that update rather than carrying assumptions from an earlier configuration. Keen Games wrote in the Update 3 changelog: “Improved stability and performance on lower hardware specs and on the Steam Deck.”
When and how to escalate a persistent crash
Escalate after testing the current game build, a current driver, reset graphics settings, and a repeatable reproduction. A complete report lets the developer distinguish a general PC issue from a particular card, driver, world, audio device, or save.
Collect the required files
- DxDiag output from Windows.
- The client
enshrouded.logfile and thebackupfolder in the Steam installation. - The relevant cloud or local save files.
- Your hardware details, driver version, Windows version, game version, resolution, and graphics settings.
Describe a reproducible case
- State the exact sequence: launch, menu, world load, location, action, and time to failure.
- Say whether the issue happens in a new world, the existing world, or both.
- Include screenshots or video when they show the error, visual artifact, or trigger.
- List every troubleshooting change already tested and its result.
Use the in-game “Report a Bug” option when it is available. If the game will not start, use Keen Games’ web form and attach the same evidence. Do not omit saves when the problem is world-specific; a log without the affected world may not contain enough context to reproduce it.
Choose the next fix by symptom and evidence
| Symptom and trigger | First action | Cost and reversibility | Evidence strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch crash or graphics initialization error | Update Enshrouded and the GPU driver; reset graphics | Free and reversible | Strong when the error matches a documented hotfix |
| RX 7000-series crash | Replace the older driver implicated by Hotfix 24 | Free; driver rollback is possible if needed | Official hotfix-specific guidance |
| RTX 50-series stability issue | Use the current Nvidia driver recommended by Hotfix 27 | Free and reversible | Official hotfix-specific guidance |
| Crash after long sessions in a large base | Update to the current build; capture duration and world details | Free; reporting takes time | Matches the Hotfix 27 crash class |
| Low FPS everywhere | Compare hardware with the requirement tiers; test resolution or upscaling | Settings are free and reversible; hardware upgrades cost money | General diagnostic method, not a guaranteed FPS gain |
| Hitching during loads or new areas | Compare an SSD with the existing hard drive and repeat the same route | SSD purchase is optional; installation change is reversible | SSD is officially recommended, but no universal FPS increase is established |
| Rubber-banding, disconnects, or empty server list | Check port access, Steam cache/privacy, DNS, and Ethernet | Mostly free and reversible | Official network troubleshooting guidance |
| Steam Deck black screen on first launch | Wait one or two minutes for client and shader preparation | Free; no setting change required | Official Steam Deck behavior |
Prevent repeat failures
- Keep Steam updates enabled and install game hotfixes before diagnosing a newly appeared problem.
- Keep a note of the working driver version, graphics settings, and affected world so a future update can be compared against a known baseline.
- Back up important local saves before testing drivers, storage moves, or major configuration changes.
- When a patch changes defaults or adds a renderer feature, reset graphics once and then rebuild your preferred settings gradually.
- For multiplayer, record whether Ethernet, DNS, or Steam privacy changes the symptom; this prevents repeatedly lowering graphics for a connection issue.
Bottom line
Start with the published requirements and a clean software baseline, then classify the failure before changing settings. Current patches and drivers are the highest-value crash fixes; one-at-a-time graphics tests reveal whether stuttering is GPU-, CPU-, or streaming-bound; an SSD may improve loading consistency without raising GPU-limited FPS; and network symptoms require port, DNS, Steam, and packet-loss checks. If the issue survives those steps, send DxDiag, enshrouded.log, the backup folder, saves, and a precise reproduction to Keen Games.
