Start by restarting the Steam Deck fully, then identify where the game fails: is it missing from Steam, does its Steam shortcut close, or does it also fail when opened in its emulator? Those symptoms point to different causes—Steam ROM Manager setup, the launch configuration, or the game and firmware files. Work through the matching checks below; EmuDeck describes its troubleshooting guide as a work in progress, so no individual step is a guaranteed fix.

First, identify where the launch fails

Restart the Steam Deck from its power menu. Switching between Desktop Mode and Game Mode is not a full restart. After restarting, note whether the title is absent from your Steam library, closes immediately when launched from Steam, works when opened directly in an emulator, or fails in both places. Also note whether the problem affects one game or several. These details help distinguish a Steam shortcut problem from an emulator, file, or system issue. EmuDeck’s SteamOS troubleshooting guide recommends restarting as an initial check.

If the game is missing from Steam

A game that is not listed in Steam may still be present on the Deck; Steam ROM Manager (SRM) is responsible for creating Steam entries for supported games.

  1. In Desktop Mode, open EmuDeck and launch Steam ROM Manager.
  2. Check that the parser for the game’s system is enabled. Avoid enabling multiple parsers for the same system unless you want duplicate entries or different launch methods.
  3. Check SRM’s Exceptions list. If the game was excluded, remove the exception.
  4. Select “Parse” to generate the app list, review the results, then choose “Add to Steam.”
  5. If SRM does not detect the game, check whether it is in the expected ROM folder and whether its file format is supported. EmuDeck’s guide says subfolders or an incorrect file format can prevent detection; consult the folder’s systeminfo.txt for system-specific information.

See EmuDeck’s Steam ROM Manager guide for the documented setup and parsing steps.

If the Steam shortcut opens and then closes

Test filenames with special characters

EmuDeck lists special characters in a ROM filename—including apostrophes, plus signs, and accented letters—as a possible cause of failure when launching from Steam. If the affected file has one, try a simpler filename and run Steam ROM Manager again so the Steam entry reflects the change. This is a targeted test, not a general explanation for every crash. EmuDeck’s troubleshooting guide documents this check.

Remove forced Proton compatibility for emulated games

For games added to Steam through EmuDeck, do not force a Proton compatibility tool as a troubleshooting step. EmuDeck says, “Turning on Proton is not necessary,” and warns against adding STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS to launch parameters. This guidance applies to EmuDeck-managed emulated games, not to Steam games generally. If you previously changed compatibility or launch options, remove those changes and test again.

If the game also fails in its emulator, verify files and locations

A corrupt, incomplete, or incorrect ROM or BIOS/firmware file can stop a game from working. A transfer can be incomplete even when the game runs on the original device. Check the emulator’s accepted game-file formats and the requirements for that particular system; then verify that any required BIOS or firmware is in the correct system-specific location. EmuDeck’s file management and import guide lists locations and notes where files should not be placed inside an extra subfolder.

If the files are in the right locations but appear invalid, EmuDeck points to redumping them from your own system. Its help site says users provide their own ROMs and BIOS; downloading commercial game files or firmware from unofficial sources is not an appropriate troubleshooting fix. See EmuDeck’s file guidance.

Update the emulator and check the SteamOS environment

Use the update method for the installed package

EmuDeck recommends keeping emulators current, but the update path depends on how the emulator is packaged. Its SteamOS guide specifies:

  • Flatpaks: update through Discover.
  • AppImages or binaries: use the emulator’s updater or EmuDeck, as applicable.
  • Windows executables: update through EmuDeck.

EmuDeck also recommends keeping system libraries current because outdated libraries may prevent Flatpak emulators from working. An update is a maintenance check, not a promise that a particular game will start afterward. For emulator-specific problems, consult the relevant emulator page linked from EmuDeck’s SteamOS troubleshooting guide.

Check for a documented Gamescope Flatpak conflict

EmuDeck identifies the Gamescope Flatpak org.freedesktop.Platform.VulkanLayer.gamescope as a possible cause of crashes with Flatpak emulators installed by EmuDeck. To check whether it is present, open Konsole in Desktop Mode and run:

flatpak list

Look for the package name above. Its presence alone does not prove it caused the crash; use EmuDeck’s troubleshooting guidance before changing or removing software.

For “unable to write path,” check the storage name

EmuDeck says a space in the name of an SD card or external drive is a typical cause of an “unable to write path” error. Check the volume name; if it contains spaces, rename it without spaces and rerun EmuDeck. Do not reformat a card as a first step. EmuDeck notes that an SD card may need to be formatted as EXT4 to be selectable during setup, but formatting can erase data. Verify the card’s state and back up its contents before considering that action. EmuDeck’s SteamOS troubleshooting guide covers the path error, and its install guide explains SD-card setup.

What to send support if it still fails

If the documented checks do not solve the problem, gather enough detail to show where the failure occurs. EmuDeck recommends obtaining photos and a log, then seeking help through its Discord or Reddit. In the EmuDeck application, use “Fetch Log File”; the troubleshooting guide also documents a Steam Deck log location. See the guide’s logging and support instructions.

  • Game title and emulator, including the emulator version if known.
  • Whether the game is missing from Steam, closes from its Steam shortcut, works when started directly in the emulator, or fails there too.
  • Whether you launch from Game Mode or Desktop Mode, and whether one game or several are affected.
  • The exact error text and any relevant Steam launch options or compatibility settings.
  • Your SteamOS/device context and the requested log or photos.
