Start with the least destructive fixes in this order: note the game versions on the title screen, install the latest update and restart Windows, verify the Steam files, update graphics and Bluetooth drivers, turn off ray tracing and mouse-control utilities, then test with only one input device. This sequence separates corrupted game data and driver faults from controller or peripheral conflicts without immediately changing many settings at once.
The current PC baseline identified in Bandai Namco’s 28 May 2026 notice is App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. That update addressed intermittent or prolonged freezes, unexpected exits, and visual corruption in some environments. If your title screen shows older numbers, update before diagnosing anything else.
Record the baseline before changing anything
Open Elden Ring and write down the App Ver. and Regulation Ver. displayed in the lower-right corner of the title screen. As of the publisher’s 28 May 2026 PC notice, the listed versions are App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. The same notice says the update fixed intermittent or prolonged freezes, unexpected exits, and visual corruption in some environments.
Also record your Windows edition, processor, graphics card, installed RAM, GPU-driver version, and whether the controller is connected by USB or Bluetooth. Note exactly when the failure occurs:

- before the title screen or immediately after pressing Play;
- during open-world traversal, combat, or area loading;
- only when a controller is connected;
- after waking the PC, changing drivers, or installing a game update.
This timing matters. A startup crash points toward files, drivers, or an incompatible setup; traversal hitching points toward rendering or frame-time instability; and a freeze that appears when a pad is connected calls for input-device isolation.
Check the PC minimums
Steam lists these minimum requirements for Elden Ring on PC:
| Requirement | Minimum listed specification |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GTX 1060 with 3 GB VRAM or RX 580 with 4 GB VRAM |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 60 GB available space |
These are minimums, not a promise of a perfectly steady frame rate. If your system is below one of them, complete the software checks, but expect to reduce graphical load and accept that some hitching may remain.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Update Elden Ring and restart Windows. In Steam, allow the game update to finish, then reboot the PC.
- Verify installed files. Steam’s path is Library > right-click Elden Ring > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Update drivers. Install the current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer and apply Windows Update. For Bluetooth, update, reinstall, or roll back the adapter driver in Device Manager, then restart.
- Disable two known PC performance triggers. Check that ray tracing has not been enabled unintentionally, and close third-party applications that control mouse behavior.
- Remove variables. Disconnect extra controllers, wheels, handbrakes, USB hubs, and similar devices. Test with one known-good controller or with keyboard and mouse.
- Test the controller connection. Work through the USB or Bluetooth branch below, then compare Steam Input enabled versus disabled.
- Escalate with evidence. Keep the versions, hardware, drivers, connection mode, error text, and results of each test for Steam or Bandai Namco support.
Change one variable at a time and retest in the same location or menu. That makes a successful fix identifiable and gives support a reproducible description.
Stop stuttering and unstable frame rates
Confirm ray tracing is not unexpectedly on
Bandai Namco’s Patch Notes Version 1.16, dated 17 October 2024, state: “In some PC versions, Ray Tracing may be unintentionally enabled and cause unstable performance.” Open the game’s graphics settings and inspect the ray-tracing option. If you did not deliberately enable it, turn it off, apply the change, and restart the game before judging the result.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Do not combine this test with several unrelated graphics changes. If frame pacing improves after ray tracing is disabled, leave the other settings alone until you have confirmed the result through the same activity that previously stuttered.
Close mouse-behavior utilities
The same patch notes say: “In the PC version, unstable framerate may be caused by third party applications that control mouse behavior.” Temporarily exit mouse-remapping, macro, polling-control, overlay, or similar utilities from the notification area and Task Manager. Then launch Elden Ring with only the normal Windows mouse driver active.

Keep the offending program closed while playing, or look for an update from its developer. This test is reversible and does not require reinstalling the game.
Update the graphics and Windows drivers
Steam identifies driver updates as a first step when performance is poor even though the PC meets the game’s requirements. Install the current driver supplied for your exact GPU model, and run Windows Update for system components. Restart after installation; do not evaluate performance during the same session in which a driver installer is still waiting for a reboot.
Record the old and new driver numbers. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use the GPU installer’s rollback option or reinstall the previously stable driver rather than repeatedly layering different versions. A rollback is a diagnostic step, not proof that every newer driver is faulty.

Reduce the number of active variables
For one test session, close capture tools, overlays, hardware monitors, RGB controllers, and background utilities that hook into games or input. The goal is not to permanently remove them; it is to determine whether a third-party process is involved. Reintroduce them individually after Elden Ring is stable.

Update first, then verify the installation
Crashes that started after an update can be caused by an incomplete download or incorrect local content. Let Steam finish all pending downloads, restart Windows, and run the file check at Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Steam describes this function as a way to have Steam verify that game files are installed correctly when you are missing textures or other content or are experiencing crashes while playing. Wait for the scan to finish; if Steam reacquires files, launch the game again before changing drivers or controller settings.
Interpret the result of verification
- Files were reacquired and the crash stops: the local installation was part of the problem. Avoid deleting the entire game unless the issue returns.
- No files changed and the crash remains: move to driver, ray-tracing, mouse-utility, and input isolation tests.
- Verification fails repeatedly: check free storage, Steam’s download status, and the drive for broader errors, then contact Steam support with the verification result.
Separate startup failures from in-game failures
If Elden Ring exits before the title screen, first test with all optional controllers and utilities disconnected. A crash or black screen that appears only after an Xbox controller is attached has been described in a Steam community report; that is anecdotal evidence, not a confirmed publisher-wide defect. It nevertheless makes controller isolation a useful diagnostic step.
If the game reaches the title screen but freezes while loading a character or entering the world, verify files, check ray tracing, and update the graphics driver before changing input settings. If it freezes only during movement through the world, compare the same route with ray tracing disabled and mouse-control utilities closed.

Capture the exact error
Take a screenshot or copy the complete message rather than paraphrasing it. Include whether the process disappeared, Windows reported “not responding,” the display went black, or the game returned to Steam. Different symptoms can have different causes even when they look similar from the desktop.
Fix a controller that is not detected or causes freezing
Start with a clean input test
- Exit Elden Ring completely.
- Unplug non-essential controllers, racing wheels, handbrakes, arcade sticks, USB hubs, and adapters.
- Leave one known-good controller connected, or disconnect all pads and test keyboard and mouse.
- Launch the game and reproduce the problem.
Steam warns that external input-device drivers can interfere with Steam. Testing one device at a time identifies whether the fault follows a particular controller, cable, adapter, or driver.
USB troubleshooting
Connect the controller directly to a different motherboard USB port, not through a hub on the first test. Try another known-good cable if the controller uses a detachable cable, and test another controller if available. A successful connection in Windows does not by itself rule out a Steam Input or game-profile conflict, so continue to the Steam configuration test.
Bluetooth troubleshooting
For a wireless controller, charge it and test at short range with other Bluetooth devices temporarily inactive. Then work through this sequence:
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on in Windows.
- Remove the controller from Settings > Bluetooth & devices, restart Windows, and pair it again.
- Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Open Device Manager, locate the Bluetooth adapter, and choose to update its driver. If updating does not help, uninstall the adapter and restart so Windows can reinstall it; if the problem began after a driver update, use the adapter’s rollback option instead.
Microsoft says an outdated or incompatible driver is one of the most common causes of Bluetooth connection problems. Use the adapter or PC manufacturer’s driver when Windows does not provide a suitable current version.

Compare Steam Input states
In Steam, open Elden Ring’s controller configuration and test Steam Input both enabled and disabled, restarting the game between tests. Keep a note of which state was used. A controller that works in one state but not the other usually indicates a translation or profile conflict rather than a failed game installation.
Recognize a connection-triggered freeze
If Elden Ring runs normally until a controller is connected, disconnect it and confirm that keyboard and mouse remain stable. Reconnect only that device, with every other input peripheral removed. If the freeze returns, record the controller model, USB or Bluetooth mode, cable or adapter used, Steam Input state, and whether the failure occurs before or after the title screen. That evidence is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

What to do when the common fixes do not work
Build a reproducible test case
Use the same save, location, controller, and graphics setting for each comparison. Write a short timeline:
- When the problem began and whether it followed an update.
- App Ver. and Regulation Ver. from the title screen.
- Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, and available storage.
- GPU, chipset, and Bluetooth driver versions.
- Controller model, USB or Bluetooth connection, cable or adapter, and Steam Input state.
- Whether file verification reacquired anything.
- Whether disabling ray tracing or closing mouse-control software changed the behavior.
This avoids the common escalation mistake of changing five settings and then being unable to identify which one mattered.
Escalate to the right support channel
Use Steam support for installation, verification, download, and Steam Input issues. Use Bandai Namco support for persistent game crashes, freezes, or rendering faults after the current update and driver checks. Supply the exact error text and your test record; do not omit a controller simply because the game also fails without it.
When to stop experimenting
Stop making unrelated changes when a test produces a clear result. For example, if disabling ray tracing restores stable frame times, keep that setting and test normally instead of immediately reinstalling Windows. If a Bluetooth adapter rollback restores pairing, leave the working driver in place and document its version.

Prevent the problem from returning
- Check the title-screen versions after major updates.
- Keep Windows, GPU, chipset, and Bluetooth drivers current, but record versions before installing them.
- Reconnect extra controllers and utilities one at a time after a stable baseline is established.
- Use direct USB connections when diagnosing a wireless or hub-related issue.
- Keep enough free space for Steam to download and replace game files; the listed storage requirement is 60 GB.
- Save screenshots of unusual errors and note which setting fixed them.
The reliable approach is controlled isolation: update the game, verify its files, check the documented PC performance triggers, simplify the hardware and software environment, and escalate with precise evidence when the fault persists.
