If your trading bot sees a repeated update, skips one, or applies events in the wrong order, first check the exchange’s documented event IDs and sequence rules. For a stateful order book, a sequence gap means the local book may no longer be trustworthy: stop using it and rebuild it through that venue’s snapshot-and-delta procedure. A WebSocket connection alone does not prove that every update reached your bot.
Why duplicate, missing, and out-of-order events happen
These symptoms can arise at different points: in the exchange feed, during a disconnect or reconnect, in your bot’s parser or queue, or while a downstream consumer retries work. Diagnose the stage before changing deduplication logic. Coinbase’s Exchange WebSocket documentation warns that, despite WebSocket running over TCP, its servers receive market data in a way that can result in dropped messages (Coinbase Exchange WebSocket overview).
Sequence numbers and update IDs help identify continuity problems, but their scope depends on the venue and channel. Coinbase documents increasing per-product sequence numbers for most messages: a jump can indicate a dropped message, while a lower value may be stale or out of order. Binance Spot documents trade IDs and depth update IDs for their respective stream use cases. Do not assume identifiers from different channels or products are interchangeable.
Tell a duplicate from a gap or a late event
- Duplicate: An event identifier or update range has already been incorporated. If the venue defines a stable identifier for the channel, use it to make processing idempotent or discard a confirmed repeat. Identical timestamps or payload values alone do not establish that two records are the same event.
- Missing: An identifier jumps beyond the next expected value, or a depth delta cannot be applied continuously to the current book. Treat dependent state as incomplete until it is recovered.
- Out of order: An event arrives with a lower sequence than the latest applied value, or the venue’s channel-specific ordering rules indicate it is late. Do not apply it blindly to a stateful structure; determine whether the venue says to ignore it or handle it another way.
Keep the documented scope of each identifier in view. Binance Spot’s trade and depth identifiers are useful within those stream contracts; they are not a universal event identity scheme.

Capture enough information to locate the fault
Record fields that let you compare the exchange’s event with the bot’s processing history. This is diagnostic practice, not a universal exchange-required schema:
- Venue, environment, channel, and product or symbol.
- Connection or session identifier, plus reconnect and subscription acknowledgment events.
- Exchange event ID or sequence/update range, where available.
- Exchange event and transaction timestamps when provided, kept distinct from local receive time.
- Local receive time, consumer-applied sequence or checkpoint, and processing result.
- Parser errors, queue depth, retries, state rebuilds, and any resulting order submission.
These records help distinguish a feed gap from a parser failure, a stalled queue, or a retry later in the pipeline. Avoid logging secrets or account credentials alongside telemetry.
Resynchronize a Binance Spot local order book after a gap
Binance Spot’s documented depth procedure uses a REST snapshot together with buffered WebSocket deltas. Follow the live documentation for the exact stream and product you use; the field names and comparisons below are specific to Binance Spot depth synchronization (Binance Spot WebSocket streams).

- Open the depth stream and buffer incoming events.
- Fetch a REST depth snapshot and note its last update ID.
- Discard buffered events already covered by that snapshot, then apply the remaining deltas in sequence according to Binance’s documented rules.
- Ignore an event whose last update ID is already behind the local state. If an event’s first update ID is greater than the local update ID plus one, Binance’s instructions indicate updates were missed: discard the local book and restart synchronization from a new snapshot.
Do not patch a book across an unexplained gap or continue making decisions from it while rebuilding. Mark the book stale or unavailable to the strategy until continuity has been re-established.

Timestamps are not automatically sequence numbers. Preserve event time, transaction time, and local receive time as separate fields; each answers a different diagnostic question.
For Binance Coin Futures user-data streams, the documentation distinguishes transaction time T from event-generation time E. It states that, on one connection for one user, messages of the same event type are strictly ordered by these times, and recommends using E when comparing different event types. This is a Binance-specific rule for that documented stream, not a general ordering guarantee for exchanges (Binance Coin Futures user-data streams).

For Coinbase Exchange WebSocket feeds, use the sequence behavior documented for the channel. The documentation says a higher-than-expected sequence can indicate a dropped message and a lower sequence can be ignored or may have arrived out of order. Coinbase points clients needing order-book updates for synchronization to the level2 channel; confirm current channel behavior in the venue documentation before relying on it (Coinbase Exchange WebSocket overview).
Check queues, retries, and broker checkpoints
If exchange events pass through Kafka or another broker, trace one event from ingestion through the broker offset or sequence, consumer processing, database/state write, and any order submission. A broker redelivery can make a record appear twice to downstream code even when the exchange event itself was not duplicated.

Producer idempotence and Kafka transactions can help within supported Kafka operations, but they do not automatically make an external database write or exchange order exactly once. External side effects need their own idempotency strategy or coordinated persistence. Kafka’s guarantees are version-dependent; consult documentation matching the version you deploy (Kafka 0.8 design documentation; Kafka Streams 3.3 core concepts).

Recover safely after disconnects and restarts
After reconnecting, determine whether the feed provides enough sequence information to prove continuity. If it does not, resubscribe and rebuild state from the exchange’s supported snapshot or reconcile it through an authoritative account or order query before trusting it. Keep the strategy aware that data is stale or rebuilding so it cannot make decisions from a partial book or account view.
Connection handling is part of normal operation, not an exceptional afterthought. Binance documents 24-hour connection lifetimes for the cited Spot market stream and Coin Futures user-data stream. The Spot documentation also describes ping/pong expectations. These are venue- and stream-specific details that can change; check the current documentation for the feed you operate (Binance Spot WebSocket streams; Binance Coin Futures user-data streams).
Choose recovery rules by channel, not by habit
Before implementing a deduplication or rebuild strategy, verify the relevant contract for each feed:

- Does every event have a stable ID or sequence range, and what is its scope?
- Is ordering defined per symbol, product, connection, or event type?
- Does the channel provide a complete snapshot, only deltas, or both?
- Is there an authoritative snapshot, account query, or other reconciliation endpoint?
- Does reconnecting preserve sequence continuity, or must state be rebuilt?
- Can database writes and order actions be safely retried without repeating a side effect?
Binance Spot’s snapshot-plus-delta book process and Coinbase’s level2 guidance illustrate why recovery must match the selected venue and channel rather than rely on one generic WebSocket fix.
