First identify which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to the connection or bitrate; rendering lag points to OBS struggling to compose the scene; and encoding lag points to a failure to encode frames on time. These are different problems, so check the symptom before changing settings.
Diagnose the kind of frame loss
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the statistics during a representative test. Note whether the network dropped-frames, rendering-lag, or skipped-frames-due-to-encoding-lag figure rises. A game can look smooth on your own screen while OBS struggles to render or encode the stream.
- Run a short unlisted test stream, or another test appropriate to your channel.
- Play the busy part of the game that usually causes trouble, with typical movement and audio.
- Watch OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream-health messages at the same time. Change one setting at a time and check whether the relevant indicator changes.
YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health. The test helps distinguish a connection problem from local rendering or encoding strain; it is not a guarantee that the issue cannot recur during a longer stream.
If OBS reports network dropped frames
OBS describes network drops as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot sustain the bitrate you configured. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming.” Work through connection and bitrate checks before changing game graphics or buying hardware.

1. Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi
Connect the streaming PC to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same test. This isolates Wi-Fi as a possible source of instability; it is not a guaranteed cure for congestion beyond your home, an ISP route problem, or a failing streaming PC. If a cable you already own works, there is no reason to buy another just to try this check.
2. Set a bitrate your upload can sustain
Run an upload-speed test, then lower the OBS video bitrate if the network-drop counter rises. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal safe limit. Available upload capacity can vary, and other devices or applications may use it while you stream, so leave headroom and test under realistic household conditions.

YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page lists recommended ingestion bitrates. The figures below are YouTube platform recommendations, not a measurement of the upload speed your connection can sustain. The retrieved page did not state a publication year; 2026 is its access year.
| Codec | Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
Do not select a bitrate just because it appears in YouTube’s table: the setting also has to fit your stable upload capacity. Lower bitrate can reduce picture quality, particularly in fast-moving games.

3. Check the route and software that can interfere
- If OBS or your platform offers a choice of ingest server, test another available server and compare the same OBS statistic.
- Check OBS network settings, including Bind to IP, which should generally remain at its default unless you have a specific network reason to change it.
- On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations such as TCP pacing and an IPv4-only test. If IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the IPv4/IPv6 default. These controls are not available on every operating system or OBS version.
- Check whether a VPN, security application, bundled network optimizer, or outdated network driver coincides with the drops. To test security software, temporarily disable it only long enough to compare; if it appears to be involved, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection. Do not leave protection off.
- Restart the modem and router as a basic connectivity check. If drops continue, give your ISP the test times, OBS statistics, bitrate, and any server or route details you have; congestion or an ISP-side route change may be outside your control.
4. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can adjust bitrate downward during network congestion. This may reduce interruptions, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can lower video quality. Treat it as a mitigation while investigating the connection, not as proof that the connection is healthy.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
Network bitrate changes will not fix local GPU or encoding overload when the network counter remains healthy. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance addresses GPU competition and the work OBS needs to render a scene and encode frames.

Reduce GPU competition first
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS lists this as a possible quick fix for GPU overload.
- Close or limit other GPU-heavy applications while streaming.
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync so the game does not consume all available GPU time.
- Lower demanding in-game graphics settings and repeat the test.
Reduce OBS workload if needed
- Simplify complex scenes, filters, and browser sources that require extra rendering.
- If rendering or encoding lag persists, lower OBS output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps is an option when 60 fps is not working.
Lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce image detail or motion smoothness. It is appropriate when OBS’s rendering or encoding statistics show strain, not as the first response to network drops.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a frame rate up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Use settings your encoder and upload connection can sustain, then confirm the result in a representative test. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are ingestion guidance, not a promise that a particular connection will carry that rate without drops.

- Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval in your encoder, keeping the interval at or below 4 seconds.
- Test a realistic section of gameplay, including movement and audio, and monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health.
- If a counter rises, change the matching category of settings only: connection and bitrate for network drops; GPU, scene, resolution, or frame rate for rendering or encoding lag.
When viewers say the stream is lagging
Viewer reports help establish whether the trouble is at the stream source or on the playback side. YouTube’s Troubleshoot live stream issues guidance distinguishes reports by how widely they occur.
- One viewer: the viewer’s device or internet connection is a likely cause. Ask them to try another device or network.
- Several viewers on the same internet connection: their shared network may be responsible. Ask someone to check playback from a different network.
- Viewers on different networks: the encoder or stream source may be involved. Check encoder output, CPU load, dashboard messages, and a local recording if available; then test outbound connection strength and contact your ISP if needed.
Use reports alongside OBS statistics and stream-health messages rather than changing your setup based on one viewer’s playback alone.
Keep an always-on gaming stream running
Once frame loss is addressed, an always-on stream still depends on the streaming setup staying available. A local OBS setup relies on the streaming computer and its connection remaining on. For a cloud option, StreamNeo is for prerecorded videos streamed continuously to YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video at the quality it was made in, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
Start with the three steps: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Start your free StreamNeo day.
