If DREADMOOR crashes before the menu, closes at “Preparing to Launch,” or shows a black screen, work through the fixes in this order: remove old playtest saves, confirm your PC meets the published requirements, restart Steam and Windows, update graphics drivers, verify the game files, and test with overlays and other non-essential software closed. The developer specifically warns that continuing an old playtest save can cause bugs and crashes in the current demo.
This guide covers the Steam demo released on October 6, 2026, and separates failures that happen before the menu, while loading a save, and during play. That distinction prevents you from applying a hardware fix to a damaged save or a file repair to a graphics-driver conflict.
Start by identifying when DREADMOOR fails
Note the exact point of failure before changing anything. A crash immediately after clicking Play, a window that appears and then closes, a black screen with continuing audio, and a crash while loading a particular save have different likely causes.
- Before the menu: compare your hardware with the minimum requirements, restart Steam and Windows, update Windows and the graphics driver, verify files, and close overlays.
- While loading a save: treat an old playtest save as the first suspect and remove the local Saved folder before starting a new game.
- Black screen with audio: use the same requirements, driver, file, overlay, and save checks; there is no officially documented DREADMOOR-specific launch command that guarantees a fix.
- Crash only after a Steam update or login problem: troubleshoot the Steam client itself, including external devices and network hardware.

Check the published PC requirements first
Steam lists the following requirements for the 2026 demo. Meeting the minimum is the baseline for attempting software troubleshooting; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual setting. The recommended tier provides more headroom.

To check your configuration, open Settings > System > About for Windows and processor information, Settings > System > Storage for free space, and dxdiag from the Windows search box for DirectX and display-adapter details. Compare the exact GPU model and installed memory, not just the amount of system RAM.
A computer below the minimum is not a reliable target for software-only fixes. If your system is close to the minimum, close other applications and use conservative graphics settings after you get into the game. A hardware upgrade can be an appropriate next step when the machine cannot meet the published baseline, but it is not a universal cure for corrupted files or stale saves.

The developer’s 2026 announcement says that continuing saves from an earlier playtest may produce “unexpected bugs and crashes” and strongly recommends deleting old save files before launching the demo. This is the most DREADMOOR-specific fix in the current guidance.
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click DREADMOOR and choose Manage > Browse local files.
- In the folder that opens, open the Dreadmoor folder if Steam has placed you one level above it.
- Delete the folder named Saved.
- Close the file window, start DREADMOOR, and choose New Game rather than attempting to continue the old playtest.
Deleting this folder removes the local save data associated with the installation. Use this procedure when you participated in an earlier playtest or when a crash occurs while loading a previous save. Do not assume that changing graphics settings will repair a save-format incompatibility.

Run Steam’s standard launch checklist
After handling a stale save, apply Steam Support’s baseline sequence. Perform the steps in order and test the game after each major change so you know which action altered the behavior.
- Restart Steam and Windows. Exit Steam completely, restart the PC, and open Steam again. This clears processes left behind by a failed launch.
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, install pending updates, restart if requested, and test DREADMOOR again.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver supplied for your NVIDIA or AMD GPU, then restart Windows. A driver update is especially relevant when the window opens but rendering remains black.
- Verify the installation. In Steam Library, right-click DREADMOOR, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish before launching.
- Close non-essential software. Temporarily exit overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities, capture or streaming tools, RGB controllers, and other background programs. Launch DREADMOOR with only essential Windows and Steam processes running.
- Retest the same scenario. Record whether the game now reaches the menu, whether a new game loads, and whether the failure remains limited to a particular save.
Steam notes that launch failures can be immediate crashes tied to a particular hardware or software configuration. Verification replaces damaged or incomplete files; it does not convert an old playtest save to a compatible format, which is why save reset and file verification are separate steps.

A black screen can mean several different things. If audio continues, the game process may be running while the display fails; if the process closes, the cause may be a crash rather than a rendering-only problem.

- Confirm that the GPU meets at least the GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 580 8 GB minimum listed by Steam.
- Update the graphics driver and restart Windows.
- Verify DREADMOOR’s files from Properties > Installed Files.
- Close overlays, capture software, monitoring tools, and other non-essential programs.
- If the installation contains an earlier playtest, delete the Saved folder and start a new game.
There is no official DREADMOOR-specific black-screen command or universal launch option in the developer and Steam guidance. Treat community tweaks as unverified hypotheses rather than guaranteed repairs.
Black screen followed by a close
Repeat the requirements check and launch checklist, then note the exact moment of closure. A failure before the menu points toward system, driver, file, or software conflicts; a failure only when loading a previous save keeps the stale-save issue high on the list.

Window never appears
Check whether Steam reports “Preparing to Launch” and then returns to the Play button. Restart Steam and Windows, update the operating system and driver, verify files, and test with background utilities disabled. If Steam itself cannot complete an update or login, follow the client steps in the next section.
When Steam itself is failing
Some launch problems are caused by the Steam client rather than DREADMOOR. Steam’s client troubleshooting guidance recommends a small set of additional checks.
- Restart the computer before repeating an update or launch.
- Install pending operating-system and graphics-driver updates.
- Disconnect non-essential external devices temporarily, including hubs and peripherals that may be introducing a driver conflict.
- If the problem occurs during downloading, updating, or signing in, restart or refresh your modem and router and retry the Steam operation.
- Reinstall Steam to the same installation location only when the client files appear damaged. Steam states that doing this correctly preserves installed games, but you should follow Steam’s own reinstall procedure rather than deleting the library manually.
Do not reinstall DREADMOOR first when the game is the only failing title. Establish whether Steam can launch other games and complete downloads; that distinction tells you whether to repair the client or continue with DREADMOOR-specific checks.

This comparison prevents a common mistake: replacing hardware when a stale save is responsible, or repeatedly deleting files when the PC is below the published minimum.
Prepare a useful bug report when the fixes fail
If DREADMOOR still crashes after the standard checks, report the reproducible failure through the in-game SUBMIT A BUG form or the developer’s official Discord route. A concise report gives the developer enough context to distinguish a graphics issue from a save, file, or configuration problem.

Include:
- Windows edition and version.
- CPU model, GPU model, installed RAM, free storage, and graphics-driver version.
- Whether the machine meets the minimum or recommended Steam specification.
- The exact stage: before the menu, while loading, after entering gameplay, or during a Steam update.
- Whether a window appears, whether audio continues, and the full wording of any error message.
- Whether deleting Saved changed the result.
- Whether Steam’s file verification found or replaced files.
- Which overlays, monitoring tools, capture utilities, or security programs were running.
- The steps that reproduce the failure, including whether it affects a new game, an old playtest save, or both.
Do not describe the problem only as “it crashes.” “The game shows a black window with audio for 20 seconds, then closes after verifying files; a new game works but the old save crashes” is actionable and can be reproduced.
What the 2026 demo update changes—and what it does not
The developer says the demo includes additional optimization work intended to improve smoothness and make DREADMOOR accessible across a wider range of PC hardware. That is an optimization goal, not a replacement for the published minimum requirements and not evidence that every launch error has a single fix.
The Steam demo is a digital PC release by Dream Dock, published by Digital Vortex Entertainment, and released October 6, 2026. The Steam page lists Steam Cloud, achievements, and 12 supported interface languages. Those features do not change the troubleshooting order: old playtest saves remain a specific risk, while requirements, drivers, files, and conflicting software must be assessed separately.

Make one meaningful change at a time whenever possible. First test a fresh restart with the existing installation, then update the driver, verify files, and disable background utilities in separate launches. If you change several things at once, you may get the game running but lose the information needed to identify the original conflict.

Common dead ends to avoid
- Do not keep loading the old playtest save. Dream Dock specifically warns that old saves can create unexpected bugs and crashes in the current demo.
- Do not treat minimum specifications as a performance guarantee. They describe the published baseline, not a promised frame rate or image quality.
- Do not assume a black screen has one universal command. No DREADMOOR-specific launch option is documented by the developer or Steam Support.
- Do not delete the Steam library manually. If the client itself must be reinstalled, use Steam’s same-location procedure so installed games can be preserved.
- Do not force a hardware purchase as the first response. An upgrade is relevant when the PC is below the minimum, but it will not repair a stale save or corrupted installation.
