Most PS5 download and update failures can be resolved without deleting your games. Check PlayStation service status and available console space first, then retry the download, update the console, and use Safe Mode’s data-preserving repairs. Add a compatible M.2 SSD when you need more playable PS5 capacity; use USB extended storage mainly for archiving games and running PS4 titles. Reinstalling system software is a last resort because it erases all console data.

Start with non-destructive checks

Do these checks in order. They distinguish an online outage from a local storage or software problem and avoid unnecessary resets.

  1. Check PlayStation service status. If Sony is reporting an outage, changing your network or deleting the download will not fix the server-side problem. Wait for the service to recover, then retry.
  2. Check the game’s requirement and console capacity. Open Settings > Storage and compare the free space with the space shown for the game or update. Leave room for the installation process rather than judging only by the final game size.
  3. Record any error code. Sony’s error index identifies CE-107872-5 as insufficient console storage and CE-107928-7 as a download failure. The code helps you choose a storage fix or a download fix instead of treating every failure as a network fault.
  4. Confirm system software is current. An outdated console can prevent a game or its patch from installing. Check Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings before attempting more invasive repairs.

Do not select a reset or reinstall option while you are still diagnosing free space, service availability, or a single failed download.

Fix a download that is stuck or repeatedly fails

Pause and resume the transfer

Open the downloads/uploads view from the PS5 control center, highlight the stalled item, and choose Pause. Wait briefly, then select Resume. This recreates the transfer session without removing the partially downloaded data.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

Cancel the item and download it again

If resuming does nothing, cancel and delete the failed download, then start it again from your game library or the PlayStation Store. This is appropriate for a corrupted or incomplete transfer, but only after you have confirmed that the console has enough free space. A redownload will not solve an outage or a full drive.

Improve the local connection

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection where possible; it removes the wireless link as a variable.
  • If you must use Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the access point, stop other large transfers, and retry when the network is less busy.
  • Restart the home router and the PS5 if other devices also have connectivity problems.

A download that fails only on the PS5 can still be caused by a service incident, a full console drive, or system software. Recheck those conditions before repeatedly changing router settings.

Install the pending system update

Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select the available update. After the console restarts, retry the game download. If the network update itself will not complete, use the USB procedure described below rather than repeatedly forcing the same failed transfer.

Resolve “not enough storage” messages

Open Settings > Storage and inspect both the games/apps category and any saved-data or media categories consuming space. Remove games you can redownload, or move them to USB extended storage when that is more appropriate. Do not delete saved data unless you have verified that it is synchronized or backed up and you no longer need it.

Use the error code to separate capacity from transfer problems

CE-107872-5 indicates insufficient console storage. Freeing space or adding supported capacity addresses that condition. CE-107928-7 indicates a download failure; it may occur with adequate space and therefore calls for the download sequence above, followed by Safe Mode repairs if it persists.

Why free space can disappear after you delete something

After deleting or moving content, return to Settings > Storage and let the console refresh its calculation before starting the installation again. If the reported capacity remains wrong or storage errors recur, shut down the PS5 and use Safe Mode’s Repair Console Storage option. This is a repair operation, not a factory reset.

Use Safe Mode without erasing your games

Safe Mode starts the PS5 with a limited set of maintenance tools. To enter it, turn the console completely off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button when prompted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data-preserving options for download and storage faults

Safe Mode option When to use it What to expect
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database A download remains stuck after a retry, or the content and storage index appears inconsistent. Clears temporary system data and rebuilds the database index. It is intended as a maintenance step and is not the same as reinstalling the system.
Repair Console Storage The console reports storage errors, capacity does not update correctly, or storage problems continue after removing content. Checks and repairs the console’s storage structure. Use it before considering a reset.
Update System Software The normal network updater fails or the console cannot complete an update through Settings. Lets you apply an update from a USB drive prepared with Sony’s official file.

Follow the on-screen warnings and do not interrupt power while a repair or database rebuild is running. If the console returns to the same error after these options, document the code and contact PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly rebuilding the database.

Reset options are different from repairs

Safe Mode also includes reset choices. Reset PS5 removes user data and returns the console to its initial setup state. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) removes the system software and all console data before installing it again. Select either only after backing up anything you need and exhausting status, storage, download, update, and repair steps. Sony states that reinstalling system software deletes all console data.

WD_BLACK 1TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0010BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Choose the right storage expansion

There are two practical ways to add space, but they solve different problems. A PS5-compatible M.2 SSD expands the console’s playable internal capacity. USB extended storage is convenient for moving games and can run PS4 games, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back before they can launch.

Capability PS5-compatible M.2 SSD USB extended storage
Launch PS5 games directly Yes, when the drive meets Sony’s compatibility requirements and is correctly installed. No. Copy a PS5 game back to console storage before playing.
Launch PS4 games directly Not the reason to choose it; it expands the PS5’s internal game capacity. Yes. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.
Installation and compatibility Requires a compatible M.2 SSD and installation in the console’s expansion bay. Check the current compatibility guidance for your PS5 model before buying. Requires a USB drive that the PS5 can format as extended storage. Formatting erases that drive’s existing contents.
Best use Keeping a larger library of playable PS5 games installed internally. Archiving PS5 games, moving titles between drives, and playing PS4 games.
Convenience Once installed, games behave like other console-storage installations. Easy to move, but PS5 titles require an additional copy operation before play.

Add an M.2 SSD for playable PS5 capacity

  1. Confirm that the SSD is listed as compatible with your PS5 model and meets Sony’s current installation requirements.
  2. Back up important data, shut the console down completely, disconnect its cables, and allow it to cool before opening the expansion bay.
  3. Install the M.2 SSD exactly as shown in Sony’s hardware instructions; do not force the module or operate the console with the cover unsecured.
  4. Reconnect the console and follow the on-screen format prompt. Formatting prepares the drive for PS5 games and deletes anything previously stored on the SSD.
  5. In Settings > Storage, verify that the new capacity appears. Set the preferred installation location if you want new games to use the M.2 drive.

A compatible M.2 SSD is the supported route when your goal is to launch PS5 games without moving them back and forth. Compatibility is model- and specification-dependent, so verify the current Sony list before purchase rather than assuming every M.2 drive will work.

Use USB extended storage for archiving and PS4 playback

  1. Connect the USB drive directly to a compatible USB port on the PS5. Avoid disconnecting it while data is being transferred.
  2. When prompted, choose the option to format the drive as USB extended storage. Formatting deletes the drive’s existing files, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
  3. Move installed games through Settings > Storage and the games/apps management screen. You can move PS5 games to free internal space without deleting them.
  4. To play a moved PS5 game, copy it back to console storage. PS4 games can remain on the USB drive and run from there.

“To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage back to your PS5 console storage.”

Update PS5 system software over the internet

The normal method is simplest when PlayStation services and your home connection are working. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, choose Update System Software, and allow the console to download and install the package. Keep the PS5 powered on and connected until it restarts and confirms completion.

If the update fails repeatedly, do not keep retrying indefinitely. Check service status, retry on a wired connection, and then use the official USB method. A USB update is also useful when the console cannot reach the network or when its existing system software is too damaged to update normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update system software from a USB drive

This procedure requires a computer with internet access and a USB drive that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive will contain the update file in a precise folder structure.

  1. On the USB drive’s top level, create a folder named PS5.
  2. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE. Use uppercase letters exactly as shown.
  3. Download the official PS5 system-software update file supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment and save it inside the UPDATE folder.
  4. Rename the file to PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not add a second extension such as .PUP.PUP, place it in another folder, or substitute a file from an unofficial source.
  5. Eject the USB drive safely from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
  6. Start Safe Mode, connect the controller with a USB cable, and choose Update System Software.
  7. Select the USB update option and follow the prompts. Do not remove the drive or cut power while the update is being installed.

“Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

— Sony Interactive Entertainment, How to update system software on a PS5 console

When the USB update is not detected

  • Check that the drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and that the console can read it.
  • Verify the exact path: PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  • Check capitalization and spelling. UPDATE is not the same as a misspelled or differently named folder.
  • Make sure the file is the official update package and that the computer did not hide or duplicate its extension.
  • Try another compatible USB port or drive if the folder and filename are correct.

If Safe Mode offers both a normal update and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), choose the update option. The reinstall option is destructive and is not a routine way to install a system update.

Internet update versus USB update

Factor Internet update USB update
Network requirement Requires a working PS5 connection and available PlayStation service. Can work when the PS5’s network path is unreliable or unavailable; the computer downloads the file instead.
Equipment PS5 and internet connection. Computer, FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, and the official update file.
File handling Console manages the download. You must create PS5/UPDATE and save the file as PS5UPDATE.PUP.
Main failure modes Service outage, unstable connection, or a damaged existing software state. Wrong format, folder, filename, unofficial file, or selecting reinstall instead of update.
Data risk Designed to preserve console data when completed normally. The update option is non-destructive; reinstalling system software deletes all console data.

A practical decision path

  • Download is stalled, with no storage warning: check service status, pause and resume, retry on Ethernet, then cancel and redownload.
  • Error CE-107872-5: free space in Settings > Storage, move games to USB extended storage, or add a compatible M.2 SSD.
  • Error CE-107928-7: follow the download sequence, confirm system software, and use Safe Mode maintenance if the failure persists.
  • Storage totals look wrong or storage errors recur: use Safe Mode’s Repair Console Storage, then Clear Cache and Rebuild Database if the content index remains inconsistent.
  • Network system update repeatedly fails: prepare the official USB update and choose Update System Software in Safe Mode.
  • Nothing works after repair and backup: consider Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only after accepting that the reset removes data; the reinstall removes all console data.

Prevent the next storage or update failure

  • Keep a reasonable amount of free console storage instead of filling the internal drive completely.
  • Use USB extended storage to archive games you do not currently play, but remember that PS5 titles must be copied back before launch.
  • Install only an M.2 SSD confirmed compatible with your PS5 model.
  • Keep system software current so new games and patches are not blocked by an outdated console.
  • Back up important saves and media before any reset or reinstall.
  • Safely eject USB storage and never disconnect it during a transfer.
  • Keep a correctly formatted USB drive available if your network connection is unreliable, but download update files only from Sony’s official support instructions.
