Start by treating this as a DLSS 4.5 and frame-generation troubleshooting problem, not a confirmed “DLSS 5” bug. The current official The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered announcement documents DLSS 4.5 features, while NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 separately as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. Update the game and NVIDIA driver, verify the game files, confirm the Frame Generation prerequisites, then compare Super Resolution or DLAA with Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation disabled. Re-enable one feature at a time only after the conventionally rendered frame rate is stable.
First, identify which DLSS generation The Witcher 3 is actually using
The title of this guide follows the wording many players use, but the version distinction matters when you are diagnosing an artifact. NVIDIA’s current Witcher 3 Remastered documentation describes DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and path tracing. NVIDIA’s separate DLSS 5 description refers to 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, not the Witcher 3 feature set documented in that announcement.
That means a menu, driver profile or overlay may show a DLSS model or generation that does not match the shorthand used in a forum post. Record the exact game build, driver version, GPU, active upscaling mode and whether ordinary Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation is enabled before comparing results.

Players report several related-looking problems: a character or object leaves a trail while moving, foliage and roof edges shimmer, subtitles or wires flicker, the image appears to drag after extended play, or frame pacing feels uneven even though the FPS counter is high. These are player reports, not proof that every installation has the same defect or a single universal fix.

- Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Ghosting: a previous position remains visible behind a moving object. Temporal reconstruction can reuse history from an earlier frame when motion data or visibility has changed.
- Shimmering: fine geometry such as leaves, roof tiles, hair, fences and wires changes brightness or detail as the camera moves. Thin features are difficult to reconstruct from a lower-resolution input.
- Flicker: rapidly changing pixels, ray-traced reflections or text can flash when the reconstruction system accepts or rejects history inconsistently.
- Dragging or smeared motion: the entire image can feel delayed or soft when generated frames are being produced from an unstable base cadence, or when latency and synchronization settings conflict.
- Uneven frame pacing: a high reported FPS does not guarantee evenly spaced displayed frames. Generated frames cannot repair a rendered-frame cadence that is already fluctuating.
DLSS relies on motion vectors and prior-frame history. Incorrect or unsuitable history can produce flicker, while rapidly changing detail and ray-traced effects expose weaknesses more readily. The same setting can therefore look clean in a slow camera pan and break up during a fast turn through foliage.
Before changing settings: make a repeatable baseline
Randomly changing several options makes it impossible to identify the cause. Use one save file and repeat the same camera movement after every change.
- Write down your GPU model, NVIDIA driver version, Witcher 3 build, output resolution and monitor refresh rate.
- Record whether HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), V-SYNC, Ray Tracing and path tracing are enabled.
- Choose a location that reliably shows the problem, such as foliage, roof lines, subtitles or a ray-traced reflection.
- Capture a short clip or use the same sequence of camera movements for each comparison. Keep the scene, resolution, driver and game build constant.
- Note both the conventionally rendered FPS before generation and the displayed or generated FPS afterward. Also note whether input feels delayed.
This is a diagnostic method rather than a claim about measured performance. It lets you determine whether the artifact starts with Super Resolution, with generated frames, or with a synchronization and pacing combination.

Step 1: update the software and verify the installation
Install the current NVIDIA driver
CD PROJEKT RED recommends using a current graphics driver when investigating low or choppy performance. Install the current driver for your GPU, restart Windows, and make sure the driver version is recorded in your baseline. If you recently changed drivers and the problem began immediately afterward, compare the clean baseline again before applying undocumented DLL swaps or model overrides.
Update The Witcher 3 and verify its files
Update the game through your platform and install the current patch listed in CD PROJEKT RED’s official support index. Then run the platform’s verify or repair game files function. CD PROJEKT RED specifically recommends cache or file verification for performance problems. A damaged or incomplete shader, executable or asset can look like a rendering defect that no DLSS setting will correct.
Confirm Windows Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
CD PROJEKT RED documents two requirements for DLSS Frame Generation: a GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics card and Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling enabled in the operating system. In Windows, check Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings, enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling if your system exposes the option, and restart when Windows requests it. If you are using an older GPU or the setting is unavailable, do not treat a missing Frame Generation option as a Witcher 3 image-quality bug.
Step 2: isolate Super Resolution, DLAA and generated frames
The most useful first split is whether the defect exists in the conventionally rendered image or appears only after generated frames are enabled.

- Set Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation to Off.
- Keep the output resolution, scene and graphics settings fixed.
- Test DLSS Super Resolution in Quality, then Balanced, then Performance.
- If your GPU can sustain native-resolution rendering, test DLAA. NVIDIA describes DLAA as using the same Super Resolution technology at native resolution rather than upscaling from a lower internal resolution.
- Repeat the same camera movement and record artifact visibility, rendered FPS, frame-time consistency and detail on foliage, roofs, text and thin geometry.
- Only after that, enable ordinary Frame Generation and repeat the exact sequence. If your hardware and game build expose Multi Frame Generation, test it separately rather than enabling both changes at once.
If ghosting or shimmer disappears when generated frames are off, concentrate on Frame Generation, the active model, driver behavior and base frame rate. If it remains, the input image, reconstruction mode, ray-traced effects or game assets are more likely contributors.
How to choose between the modes
| Configuration | What it changes | What to watch | Useful diagnostic result |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLAA, generation off | Native-resolution anti-aliasing without upscaling or generated frames | Native GPU load, fine detail and base frame-time consistency | If clean, the lower-resolution reconstruction path is implicated; if unstable, the issue is not limited to DLSS upscaling. |
| DLSS Quality, generation off | Super Resolution from a relatively high internal resolution | Foliage, roofs, subtitles and motion edges | Provides a higher-quality baseline than Balanced or Performance while keeping generated frames out of the test. |
| DLSS Balanced or Performance, generation off | More aggressive upscaling with greater performance headroom | Shimmering, lost thin detail and temporal stability | If artifacts increase as the mode becomes more aggressive, the internal-resolution reduction is exposing the scene’s difficult geometry. |
| Super Resolution plus ordinary Frame Generation | Adds AI-generated intermediate frames to the rendered sequence | Latency, trails, whole-screen smearing and frame-time regularity | If the base image is clean but this configuration is not, investigate generation and synchronization rather than replacing every graphics setting. |
| Super Resolution plus Multi Frame Generation | Adds multiple generated frames between rendered frames where supported | Artifact visibility, input response and pacing under fast camera motion | Use as a separate test. More generated frames do not compensate for an unstable rendered cadence. |
Step 3: check the active DLSS model and feature path
Where supported, use the NVIDIA app statistics overlay to inspect the active DLSS model. Record the model shown during each test rather than assuming the game is using the newest option. If a model override is available, document it and revert it when comparing results; an override can make two otherwise identical tests use different reconstruction behavior.
NVIDIA says the second-generation transformer model is designed to reduce ghosting and improve temporal stability for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction. That is a design goal, not a guarantee that every scene will be artifact-free. Thin geometry, rapidly changing detail and path-traced effects remain demanding inputs.
RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation options
On GeForce RTX 50-series cards, NVIDIA documents Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a separate 6X Multi Frame Generation capability as DLSS 4.5 features. Compare these options against ordinary Frame Generation with the same scene and base rendered FPS. Keep the option that provides acceptable image stability and latency, not simply the largest counter value.
Step 4: stabilize the rendered frame rate before tuning synchronization
CD PROJEKT RED notes that frame-rate fluctuations vary with the scene, system configuration, graphics settings and output resolution. Path tracing is especially expensive. Lower or disable path tracing temporarily, reduce other costly settings if necessary, and establish a stable conventionally rendered frame rate before judging generated frames.
Then tune synchronization in a controlled order:
- Set a frame-rate cap below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, leaving practical headroom for scene changes. The exact cap depends on your display and GPU; there is no single correct number for every system.
- Test VRR with V-SYNC in one combination, then test the alternative combination. Change only one synchronization setting between runs.
- Repeat the same camera movement and watch frame-time consistency rather than relying only on the average FPS counter.
- Check whether the apparent dragging occurs only when the generated FPS exceeds the display’s refresh range or when the rendered FPS falls sharply.
Generated frames are predictions inserted between rendered frames. They can make motion appear smoother when the rendered cadence is stable, but they cannot repair large gaps or irregular delivery in the rendered frames themselves. If the base frame time spikes, disable generation while you reduce the cause.
Step 5: target shimmer and flicker without guessing
Thin geometry and foliage
Leaves, grass, wires, fences, roof edges and hair occupy only a few pixels at many viewing distances. Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality, or test DLAA if the GPU can sustain it. If the defect changes sharply with the reconstruction mode, you have identified a temporal-resolution sensitivity rather than a synchronization fault.

Subtitles and text
Text can flicker when its fine strokes move across the reconstructed pixel grid. Compare subtitles with generated frames disabled, then enabled, while keeping the same camera motion. If text is stable without generation but flashes with it, use ordinary Frame Generation or turn generation off for scenes where legibility matters more than the extra displayed FPS.
Ray-traced and path-traced effects
Reflections, shadows and lighting can change rapidly as the camera moves. Temporarily disable path tracing and retest. If the flicker disappears, re-enable ray-traced features one at a time or reduce the most expensive option. This isolates the ray-traced input that is exposing the temporal reconstruction weakness; it is not a universal promise that one particular setting will cure every scene.
Why history rejection can look like flicker
NVIDIA’s programming guidance explains that a reconstruction system can incorrectly discard reprojected history. When that happens, pixels may be rebuilt from insufficient current-frame information instead of a reliable prior sample, producing visible flicker. The practical response is to reduce the most aggressive upscaling mode, disable Multi Frame Generation for comparison, and test with path tracing off. These changes identify the problematic input; they do not alter the underlying game assets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding the “whole screen starts dragging” report
Some players report that motion looks normal initially and becomes smeared or delayed after playing for a while. Treat this as a report requiring reproduction, not as an established universal Witcher 3 failure. Check whether the rendered FPS, GPU utilization, temperature, VRR state or frame-time graph changes at the same moment. Reproduce the sequence after restarting the game, then compare generation off and on.
- If the effect occurs only with generated frames, compare ordinary Frame Generation with Multi Frame Generation and verify that the base rendered cadence remains stable.
- If it occurs with every mode, investigate driver, game files, thermal or system-load changes rather than DLSS alone.
- If it appears when the display leaves the VRR range, test a conservative frame cap and a different V-SYNC combination.
Performance figures and what they do—and do not—prove
NVIDIA’s 2026 Witcher 3 Remastered examples cite up to 385 frames per second at 4K on a GeForce RTX 5090 with Ultra+ path tracing and up to 245 frames per second at 4K on a GeForce RTX 5080 with Ultra+ path tracing. Those are NVIDIA’s stated examples under its specified conditions, not a guarantee for every CPU, driver, game build, monitor or scene. A high generated FPS in such an example does not establish that your rendered frame times are stable or that thin geometry will be artifact-free.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When to stop changing settings and report the problem
Stop cycling through undocumented tweaks after you have completed a clean driver and game update, file verification, prerequisite check, feature isolation and pacing test. At that point, capture a short clip showing the symptom with the game build, driver version, GPU, resolution, synchronization state, DLSS mode and generation mode visible. Include the save location or repeatable camera movement and report it to CD PROJEKT RED.
Community reports are useful for identifying patterns, but they do not establish one guaranteed fix. Avoid presenting DLL replacements, unofficial model overrides or random configuration files as certain solutions; they can change the rendering path, complicate support and make later comparisons invalid.
A compact decision checklist
- Ghosting only with generation on: keep Super Resolution or DLAA fixed, compare ordinary Frame Generation against Multi Frame Generation, inspect the active model, and confirm a stable rendered FPS.
- Shimmering increases in Performance mode: move to Balanced or Quality, then test DLAA if native rendering is viable.
- Flicker tied to reflections or lighting: disable path tracing temporarily and reintroduce ray-traced features one at a time.
- Uneven pacing despite a high FPS counter: cap below the display limit, test VRR/V-SYNC combinations separately, and prioritize rendered frame-time consistency.
- Frame Generation unavailable: verify the GeForce RTX 40 Series requirement and Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling.
- Nothing changes after updates and isolation: document the reproducible case and contact CD PROJEKT RED rather than applying unverified swaps.
Bottom line
The reliable fix is a controlled pipeline, not a magic DLSS switch: establish a repeatable scene, update the driver and game, verify files, confirm the Frame Generation prerequisites, test Super Resolution or DLAA without generated frames, and add ordinary or Multi Frame Generation only after the rendered cadence is stable. The Witcher 3 documentation currently points to DLSS 4.5, while DLSS 5 is a separate NVIDIA technology description, so identifying the active feature path is the first step toward diagnosing ghosting, shimmer, flicker and pacing.
