Deadlock problems are easiest to fix when you first separate a launch crash from an in-match performance problem or a network disconnect. Start with Steam Server Status, a temporary wired-connection test, Windows and driver updates, file verification, and disabling non-essential software. Then test Deadlock’s -dx11 launch option only as a reversible renderer experiment; it is not a guaranteed Valve fix.
The steps below move from the most reliable, least destructive checks to targeted diagnosis. Keep a note of what changes after each step so you can tell a local frame-time problem from latency, jitter, a server issue, or a regression after a patch.
Identify which problem you actually have
“Deadlock is broken” can describe several different failures. The timing and scope of the symptom determine which checks are useful.
Recommended Free Tools
| Symptom | Most useful first distinction | What it tends to indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Closes before the main menu | Does it happen immediately at launch or after a short loading period? | Renderer initialization, damaged files, drivers, interfering software, or system requirements. |
| Freezes or crashes only in a match | Does the desktop remain responsive? | Game or driver instability under load; if the game stays running but actions arrive late, investigate the network instead. |
| Low FPS or hitching | Does the image pause while the connection indicator remains normal? | Local frame-time or CPU/GPU contention, background programs, or a post-patch change. |
| Rubber-banding, delayed abilities, or players teleporting | Does the frame rate remain smooth? | Latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi or powerline interference, router conditions, ISP timing, or geographic server distance. |
| Only Deadlock is affected | Do other online games and Steam downloads work? | Game files, a Deadlock-specific update, or a route to the game service. |
| Several games or Steam features fail | Do failures follow the same network or PC connection? | Steam status, firewall rules, router, ISP, or a system-wide driver/software issue. |
Do not use a network fix to treat a frame-rate problem. A smooth-looking game can still feel delayed because of high latency, while a network can be healthy when the game stutters from local rendering.

Run the low-risk checks first
- Check Steam Server Status. If Steam or the relevant service is having an incident, local changes will not restore a match. Wait for the service to recover before drawing conclusions from repeated retries.
- Restart the complete path. Exit Deadlock and Steam, restart the computer, then restart the router. This clears a transient client, driver, or router state without changing your configuration.
- Test the connection separately. Try another online service. If only Deadlock fails, keep the investigation focused on the game, Steam, or the route to its servers; if everything fails, work outward from the router and ISP.
- Record the symptom. Write down whether it is a launch crash, a match crash, stutter, a disconnect, or delayed input; the exact error text; and whether it began after a patch or driver change.
Steam Support specifically advises checking server status, testing the router, reviewing firewall rules, and disabling software that may interfere with Steam. Those checks are more informative when performed before a reinstall or a collection of random launch options.
Fix crashes on startup or while loading
Update Windows and device drivers
Install pending Windows updates and update the graphics driver for your GPU. A launch crash can occur before Deadlock displays a useful message, so a current operating system and driver remove a common compatibility variable. Restart after updates rather than launching immediately from the installer.
If the crash started directly after a driver update, record that timing. Do not assume the newest driver is automatically the cause, but include the driver version when you ask for help. The useful comparison is the exact version and the point at which the behavior changed.

Verify Deadlock’s files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Deadlock and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (the wording can vary slightly with Steam’s client layout).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and allow the process to finish.
- Start Deadlock again before changing additional settings.
Verification replaces or reacquires files that do not match Steam’s expected installation. It does not repair Windows, a graphics driver, a failing disk, or a network route, so a clean result does not rule out those causes.
Disable non-essential software for one controlled launch
Close overlays, capture tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, macro tools, aggressive antivirus controls, and other programs that hook into games. Also pause launchers or utilities that inject an overlay into the rendering process. Test with only Steam and the required system services running, then re-enable programs one at a time if the crash disappears.

This is an isolation test, not a demand to permanently remove security software. If an antivirus or firewall blocks Steam, use its trusted-app or allow-list controls according to the product’s documentation rather than leaving protection disabled.
Check system requirements instead of assuming a borderline machine is supported
Steam warns that “Games may not launch if your machine is just at or below the game’s system requirements.” Compare your hardware and operating-system edition with Deadlock’s current store requirements. A machine that launches other games is not automatically adequate for this one, and a requirement match does not guarantee freedom from driver or software conflicts.

Try -dx11 as a reversible renderer test
Some players report that forcing DirectX 11 helps a startup crash, and an official-forum report describes an AMD Vulkan-driver crash improving after switching to -dx11. These are reports, not a Valve-guaranteed fix or a measured performance benefit.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Deadlock, and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-dx11exactly, with the leading hyphen, then close the Properties window. - Launch Deadlock and test the same action that previously failed.
- If there is no improvement, or rendering becomes worse, remove the option and retest with the default renderer.
Treat the switch as an experiment: change one variable, reproduce the original failure, and keep the result. Do not stack several undocumented options because you will lose the ability to identify which change mattered.
Reduce stuttering, hitching, and low FPS
Separate frame-time stutter from network delay
Watch what the image does when the problem occurs. A brief pause, uneven camera movement, or a sudden drop in rendered frames while audio and local input continue points toward frame-time work on the PC. Smooth animation with delayed actions, rubber-banding, or other players jumping between positions points toward latency or jitter. Both can happen at once, so test them independently.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Remove bandwidth and CPU contention
Pause downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams, browser tabs playing media, voice or chat clients that are transferring files, and other bandwidth-heavy processes. Steam’s lag guidance identifies background applications that consume bandwidth as contributors to choppy gameplay and low framerate; they can also compete for CPU time, disk access, or network queues.
After closing a process, reproduce the same in-game situation. If the hitching stops, re-enable programs individually to find the conflict. A download that looks small can still fill an upstream or downstream queue, especially on a connection with limited capacity.
Check router conditions and server latency
When stutter is really network jitter, changing graphics settings will not correct it. Check whether other devices are saturating the connection, whether the router is unusually hot or repeatedly reconnecting, and whether the problem follows a particular time of day. ISP congestion and geographic distance to a game server can change latency even when your PC is working normally.
Use a direct wired test
Steam Support states: “Wireless and powerline connections can cause intermittent failures due to interference. If possible, test Steam with a direct wired connection to determine if this is a problem.” Connect the computer directly to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable for a controlled test. The cable is useful here as a diagnostic path: do not treat the test as a promise of lower ping or a guaranteed Deadlock fix.
Play the same mode for long enough to encounter the original symptom. If the issue disappears on Ethernet but returns on Wi-Fi or powerline, investigate wireless placement, interference, channel congestion, adapters, and powerline conditions. If it remains unchanged, the cause is more likely elsewhere in the PC, router, ISP path, or game service.

Do not claim an FPS gain that has not been measured
No authoritative figure establishes a Deadlock-wide crash rate, stutter rate, latency threshold, or FPS increase from -dx11. Use your own before-and-after observation only to decide whether the setting helps your machine; do not interpret a single smooth match as a universal result.
Troubleshoot disconnects and connection failures
Start with Steam and firewall checks
- Check Steam Server Status before changing local settings.
- Confirm that Steam is online and that Deadlock is fully updated.
- Review the operating system firewall and security suite for blocked Steam or Deadlock components.
- Temporarily close software known to filter, proxy, inspect, or reshape network traffic, then test again.
- Restart the router and check whether other devices lose connectivity at the same time.
Restore normal firewall and security settings after the test. If allowing an application is necessary, create the narrowest rule that your security product supports instead of disabling the firewall globally.
Compare wired, wireless, and powerline paths
Run one match or equivalent session over Ethernet, then compare it with the normal wireless or powerline path. A failure that appears only on one path is strong evidence of a local-link problem. A failure that follows the computer across paths is more consistent with the router, ISP, Steam, the game service, or the PC itself.
Distinguish a server incident from an ISP or route problem
If Steam reports an incident or many players are affected, wait rather than repeatedly reconnecting. If only your household is affected, note the router’s reconnect times and the ISP’s outage information. If the problem occurs only in Deadlock while other services remain stable, preserve the exact time, region, and match context; geographic latency or a route to the game service may be involved even when general browsing works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep bandwidth-heavy work off the connection while testing
Stop game downloads, operating-system updates, cloud backups, high-resolution streams, and large uploads during a controlled session. This removes queueing as a variable. Once the connection is stable, reintroduce one workload at a time if you need to find the threshold at which symptoms return.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
Changing many things at once makes a temporary improvement impossible to explain. Use this order and record the result after each stage:
- Check Steam Server Status and note the date and time.
- Restart Steam, Deadlock, the computer, and the router.
- Install pending Windows and GPU-driver updates.
- Verify Deadlock’s files through Steam.
- Close non-essential overlays, monitoring tools, downloaders, streams, and chat transfers.
- Test a direct Ethernet connection with a Cat6 cable, keeping the rest of the setup unchanged.
- For a launch crash, test
-dx11alone; remove it if it does not help. - Reproduce the original symptom and compare the result with your notes.
Stop when the problem is resolved. More changes are not automatically better, and an unnecessary tweak can create a second problem.
Collect useful evidence before escalating
Community or developer support can act on a reproducible report; “it crashes” is rarely enough. Include:
- Windows or Linux version and edition.
- GPU model and exact graphics-driver version.
- Whether the failure happens at launch, while loading, or during a match.
- The exact error message, if any, and whether the desktop remains responsive.
- Whether the issue began after a Deadlock, Steam, operating-system, or driver patch.
- Whether the connection uses Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or powerline, and whether another path changed the result.
- Whether Steam Server Status showed an incident at the time.
- Which steps you attempted, in order, including file verification and the result of the
-dx11test. - For disconnects, the approximate time, match context, and whether other devices lost service.
Keep the report factual and repeatable. Do not omit a step merely because it sounds routine; verification, updates, and disabling interfering software are the highest-confidence first-line launch checks and provide useful negative evidence when they fail to help.
Quick Recap
What each result tells you
| Test result | Likely next direction |
|---|---|
| Verification fixes the launch crash | A damaged or incomplete game file was involved; monitor after the next update. |
| Closing an overlay or utility fixes it | Re-enable programs one at a time and keep the conflicting program out of Deadlock. |
-dx11 fixes startup on an AMD Vulkan setup |
Keep the option only if it remains stable; report the driver and renderer details if seeking a permanent fix. |
| Ethernet fixes disconnects or rubber-banding | Investigate Wi-Fi or powerline interference, router placement, and local congestion. |
| Ethernet changes nothing | Look at Steam status, firewall rules, router or ISP timing, geographic latency, and the game or PC itself. |
| Only post-patch sessions fail | Record the patch timing and exact reproduction steps; avoid assuming your hardware changed. |
| Several games fail in the same way | Prioritize system-wide drivers, security software, router, ISP, and Steam service checks. |
